  1. http://www.rivercitylures.50megs.com/make/how2/aaa/ch1/ch1.htm Nice group of article that I am not sure are up here or not on bait refinishing and refoiling. Good beginner info.
  2. How serious? I am not the expert most of the guys are here. Harbor Freight has a fair air brush for 15$ Not great but good enough to do what I do to refinish old baits.

    Paint Help

NOT worried about hard baits as I do not make but do repaint a lot of my existing top water baits. If you have the type of paint I have one of the real cheap guns that is too coarse for fine work but great to put a stripe or such on a bait.

    Paint Help

Did not get an answer on the soft plastics forum but this bait is a cross over. Paul Brown's Corky type bait is a killer bait on the Texas coast for this time of year. They are not for sale at this time as they were bought out and will be available in a month or two. I need to repaint a couple of these baits if possible and need to know what type of paint can you use to paint these baits. I plan to turn a couple of my off colors to a white or pearl, ch, orange for a big trip in two weeks. I had a BAD a-- whipping last weekend for not having this in my box. Attached a px of the baits. I have the pink but need the other and have some odd colors if I can get the paints. Any help appreciated. Jim

  6. There are several mullet type baits that have been painted. I need to change to colors because the baits are no longer made at this time. What type of paits can you get to paint soft plastics? Need to find white and ch. paints. I have the guns and paint some hard baits. Thanks, Jim D
  7. Have you taken it out in clear water and tried the action? I am more into custom colors and redoing Saltwater baits down in the Texas Gulf Coast but I have found that it helps esp with the sinking and suspending baits to go out and try them in the water then I wonder how much different pool vs salt water chances suspend and sink rate. Funny how the action on stock baits like spook jr,r catch 5, Catch 2000 change from bait to bait. But I do look funny down at the store shaking baits to see how they rattle too. Occasionally I have to customize the hooks to get the action to where I want it. I have gone to a lot of single hooks which has not really changed the hook up rate if the fish wants the bait sure makes it a lot easier wading and catching a big trout or red fish. I use a boga grip or hand grab fish a lot of the time and single hooks make it easier. On a lot of baits and you can really chance the action by changing the hooks out to customize each bait.
  8. Lot of places quit carrying it. Walmart, HD both quit Carrying the Devcon 2ton for some reason but he is right my ACE does carry it but if they quit ??? .

    Blanks

X9236 Super Spook Jr. Noticed that Spook jrs can be had cheap $1.99 at the above address. Bill Dance had some spook jr baits that did not sell in bass green back/ black scale pattern, clear green on the bottom and sides with a thin pinkish bottom stripe. I hit the with Createx white and redo them for salt water but the spook jr is a great top water bait if someone wanted to try his hand at painting or just redoing the bottom of this bait it might be a fun project if you like the bait for fresh water or wanted a starter project.
  10. Catch the exacto knofe on sale at Harbor Freight. Got a bunch at 2$ per the other day.
  11. John, Looks great. Wonder how the first one would look for Saltwater trout? During the spring lots of big trout are caught on top water plugs like spook jrs, Spooks, and skitterwalks. I have been repainting baits hoping to get in to the Laguna Madre wade fishing this weekend. That bait's action looks a lot like a broken back easing thru the water. Any close up pxs of the bait? Thanks, Jim

    Glitter Questions

Think that I finally found a way to place glitter where I want it that works for me. I picked up some of the clear paint then brushed it on the painted bait. You can then sprinkle the glitter on or use the brush to move the glitter around. With the dab and paint you can really move the glitter around and add and delete, or place different color of glitter where you want it. Best of all you can gently wash the glitter off and start over it needed which cannot be done using the D2 or clones. After it drys placing the d2 did not seem to be any difference than placing d2 on a bait without glitter.

    D2 problems

What do you think caused the problem with the bait that did not have the glitter but had glow paint applied over the Grey outline of an old Walmart Black Super spook. I hand painted over the silver/gray and put two eyes on the back by putting a pool and thinning with the brush in the center. Glow paint did not appear that thick but still after heating the finish seemed wavy drying. Too much heat or?

    D2 problems

I am into repainting baits and have had good results from the board's advice. I use a bbq motor for my turning wheel where I use exacto knives mounted horizontally into the foam block that fits onto the motor. I have as a rule had nice clear coats till I played with larger glitter and got some wavy areas. I took a superspook in black with gray markings and placed the glow in the dark paint over the gray and it looks great little rough with the brush. I coated several baits with D2 that I had added gills and throats to and more or less they came out fine. The black super spook came out wavy. I do use a heat gun to help smooth out some of the spots but as a rule this has not been a problem. The other baits came out good even where I used the heat gun to smooth just the areas that I covered with D2 or added to already epoxed baits. Why do you think the ss came out so wavy in the finish? Too much heat causing the d2 to get too fluid? Glow paint not being smooth enough since itwas hand painted with a little depth to it? Too early in the am? Thanks, Jim

    Glitter Questions

    Glitter Questions

Anyone tried Gel blending medium? You mix it with the paint's for ceramcoat acrylic paints. If this works the you can mix the glitter with a glob of this gel and paint it on to dry. Seems a better way with the larger glitter sizes. Ideas? comments?

    Glitter Questions

Still did not get by hobby lobby. I still think the answer for bigger glitter is using the gel that the small glitter comes dispersed in. This glitter did well with the bigger mixed with the gel but I got too much little glitter for what I wanted to do and that was add a little flash similar to the bait that I wanted to copy Which is a plastic rat tail type of bait. With this gel you could mix your own glitter and paint it on the bait where and how you wanted it. I am guessing it is an acrylic type of paste. Jim

    Glitter Questions

I tried glitter placement several different ways. These easiest was the glitter mixed in the adhesive but I did not want that much ultrafine glitter. I tried mixing it in the 2 ton. Is it easier to sprinkle the glitter down on a clear coat of Createx and paint the glitter around if needed with only the 1/64 size glitter OR DO hobby shops carry just the adhesive that comes in the bottle WITHOUT any glitter so you could mix your own? What is the best way to use the 1/64 size glitter? I just want some flash like you see in someof the plastic baits not the amount you get with the ultrafine.

    Glitter Questions

You have me going to try another HL and Walmart. Both of you have great looking baits on you px pages. I fish saltwater a lot and use Spook jrs a lot of the time. Our stores here are limited on the Spooks that they carry. Even with the little that I do I cannot wait to go see how my souped up baits do. I have added Ch and pink bellies, glitter, gills, mouths to baits plus cleaning up and Dc2 ing a lot of my chrome baits that donot last long before being chipped and pealed. On our coast this time of year the ch top and bottom with silver sides, pink t and b with silver sides and bone t and b are good colors along with natural colors. For plastics wade fishing the plumb with ch tail, black magic (black with silver and red glitter w/ ch tail, and pumpkinseed ch tail (brown with black specks and ch tail are top baits with the guides. One of the other good plastics for wade fishing is Avocado - Ch belly with a black top and a little fine glitter in the mix probably 3 parts silver and 1 part red glitter to give a little flash and a red tail on the bait in a rat tail instead of a paddle tail. I want to make a spook jr in the avocado colors. I have the spook jr bait done except for the glitter and the eyes. I have the glow with black eye and the orange with black eye and not sure which is better and I cannot decided on the tail. For my fishing buddy he wanted a red head on his with the regular eyes but on mine I think I want a red hair tail tied with a little flash in it instead of painting the tail end of the bait red. I did put a small red throat on my bait. Any suggestions?
  22. You have me hooked after two weeks refinishing and making the color of lures that I want instead of what I can buy in Houston. I will never have the time to do the beautiful work that I see here but I would rather be out trying out my new baits. Few questions. I sat down last night and figured out a really nice Florescent Ch color for some baits. I did a white base coat and it seems that the fl colors are fairly transparent but do great over the white base coat. Are most of the colors fairly transparent in the Ct paints. How about adding glitter? I see a lot of posts on using the extra fine glitter but not much on the larger glitter. My local Walmart and Hobby Lobby seem to carry two different sizes of glitter. TOO Large and the micro fine glitter in a glue base. One is too small and the other way too big. Where can you find the fine glitter at a local shop without ordering from a soft plastic company? If I have to use the paint on glitter is there a problem with it sticking after application of the D2 clearcoat or is one type of paint on glitter better than another? Does the bottle squeeze out and paint on stick well? Thanks, Jim
  23. I was lucky and used my old rod turning set up and put a piece of 10 inch closed cell foam over the rod but holder and cut some holes for the 4 exacto knives that I use to hold baits. The other thing about the foam is with the under sized holes to snug up on the pvc is the fact the foam make a great holder just sittingon the shop table to stick the holders in while waiting to paint or acting as holders for dryng for small touch up not requiring turning.
  24. Looks that simple the Finnish way !
