  1. The more that I think about it, most of my mold prep applies more specifically to bullet molds (sprue plate honing, stress relief of aluminum molds to ensure that alignment pins stay put, mold handle prep, etc.). Ultimately, the cleaning of the mold blocks is probably the only part that applies to fishing tackle. I would typically soak overnight in carb. cleaner. I guess my prep will be limited to that. Thanks, Branden
  2. As a bullet caster I am very familiar with new mold cleaning and preparation. My question is should I perform the same prep work on my new do-it mold? Or should I just lube the pin, smoke it, and go? Thanks!
  3. Thanks for the feedback, I appreciate it.
  4. I have attempted to incorporate some of Tigerfire and DSV's comments into this slightly revised color scheme. I placed the front stripe too far forward, so I wasn't able to incorporate a gill on these, but I may alter them in the future. Once again, I haven't added eyes or clear coat yet because I am waiting until I can get them perfect before I do that. The faces on each bait are slightly different. The blue one didn't turn out as intended, but I do plan on using that blue color on my Blue Tilapia bait, which is coming up after I finalize this color scheme. Which face is best? Any suggestions on potential changes to this color scheme (Green Tilapia) is appreciated. Branden
  5. Hey Everyone, I am trying to paint a decent representation of a Green Tilapia. I have only seen them in pics, so I am looking for any constructive criticism that you all may have on how to improve this bait. I haven't added eyes or clear coat yet because I am not entirely happy with it yet and may wash the paint off and start over. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks, Branden
  6. Wow, the popsicle sticks are a great idea. I currently use the small alligator clips that are used for connecting wires to battery posts. These work well, but on a deep diver it takes at least 8 clips to hold everything in place.
  7. Just out of curiosity, how many coats of Devcon does everyone use? I have only painted a handful of baits, but typically apply only one coat. Also, what is the consensus on how long to wait to apply the second coat?
  8. Thanks for all of the info, it's greatly appreciated!
  9. I am heading to El Salto for the first time in June and want to paint some baits for the trip. I have seen tilapia pictures that show the blue tilapia (like those in Amistad) as well as darker (brown, green, black, gold) colored almost bluegill looking tilapia Does anyone have any experience on the lake? What is the most prevalent subspecies in El Salto?
  10. I'm definitely interested in the mini blaster. It looks like the best option and I'd like to know more about it if you don't mind. What models do you suggest? What do I need to get started? Etc..... Thanks again for the help.
  11. I tried doing a search on this, but couldn't find any information. I am looking to paint some transparent baits (e.g. ghost minnow and phantom craw colors). My only problem is getting the bait clear. Currently, my painting is limited to opaque baits, so I sand, prime, paint, and clear coat. Can I use solvent to remove the paint and make the bait clear or do I sand until all of the paint is removed? Any other helpful tips are also appreciated. Thanks for any help!
  12. I am trying to find the best light wire hook for pouring shaky heads. Are there any suggestions? I'd prefer to stick with Mustad, Owner, or Gamakatsu, but am open to any suggestions. Also, where is the best place to purchase them?
  13. So you simply dip the iron into the hot plastic over and over until you get a bait with the appropriate thickness, then you pull the knife out? Do you pull the knife out before the bait completely cools?
  14. I was wondering if anyone on this website is using alumisol? I was originally turned onto the whole lure making topic by Larry Dahlberg's dvds in which he uses alumilite products exclusively, but I have heard almost no mention of it on here. Is it as good as the others (Calhoun's, M-F, lurecraft, etc.)? Branden
  15. Correct....just like that, and ideally I'd like to make some that are a little bit smaller for those days when I am not feeling the big bite! Nice fish by the way.
  16. I have done some searching on the web and am having a hard time finding a mold for the large halibut sized single tail grubs. I am looking for anything in the 8-11" range. Does anyone commercially produce them? Thanks for any help, Branden
  17. Kelly, That was my original thought when I saw the mold, but unfortunately they do not make it any larger than 2 ounces. I am looking for sizes in the neighborhood of 4-8oz. Do-It is the only manufacturer that I am familiar with, are there any others out there? Branden
  18. I would like to make a fluke ball jig mold, it seems that if I could easily modify a Do-It cannon ball mold to accept the extra eyelet, I'd be all set. I am relatively unfamiliar with the molds (haven't used them yet, but will be soon). Is this feasible? For those of you unfamiliar with a fluke ball, I have attached a picture. I would also like to modify a Spire Point mold to have an eyelet on the hook end instead of a straight hook, this way I could attach a split ring and swinging hook to make a parachute jig similiar to the Andrus Swinging Hook Parachute Jig. Thanks for any help, Branden
  19. What is the best way to remove vaseline from plaster molds before you seal them? Thanks for any help, Branden
