If I go that route Mark I'll either be venting it through an open window or through a dryer vent cut into the wall. Either way I wouldn't want the side of the house looking like a Mardi Gras parade float from the paint being exhausted.

Or dynamite.

I've never turned a piece of wood in my life, but have used metal lathes and one thing to remember is to NEVER wear loose fitting clothing that could get wrapped up in your turning. I had to unwrap a friend of mines hand from a magnetic drill one time and it was not a pretty site. Ben

Woodie I've got a squirrel cage blower although not sure about the CFM it moves. Pretty sure it will move more than enough air, but have sourced a couple others in case it's not adequate. Planning on building something that will fit on top of my workbench that can be set aside when not in use. Also plan on using something along the lines of a dryer vent that will allow the nasty stuff to be vented outside through a filter. So many plans. So little time. Ben

Thanks Woodie. It's been warm and humid down here for several days now, but that can change fairly quickly. The warm part anyway. Got a few colors of the enamel paints in and tried spraying a couple baits with them. One thing I've noticed about the enamel is that you can thin it way beyond what water based paints are capable of and it goes on incredibly smooth. Only thing that bothers me is the length of time it takes to dry/cure. Have read where it can take a day or more to fully off gas. That's got me thinking about giving lacquers a try. Found some plans for a DIY portable spray booth to deal with the nasty stuff in lacquers and enamels. May end up doing a complete overhaul to my painting regimen. Thanks again for all the information everyone. Ben

Made my turner out of scrap plywood, a turntable motor out of a microwave that came out of a scrap bin, a piece of all thread, a couple hex nuts and some open screw eyes. Cost me exactly $0.00 and it's been going for 6 1/2 years. Ben

Thanks Mark.

Are you using your browser to search Travis? If so are you just typing something like "airbrushing enamel paint" into the browser or do you include Tackle Underground in the search term? thanks, Ben
-
Thanks Stretcher and Woodie. I appreciate the information. Spraying enamel is a first for me, but to try and match a bait I figured it would be easier to use the same paint as the original painter used. Woodie, do you know if water based paints can be sprayed over enamel? thanks again guys, Ben

Here is one source for glow powder paint. Just highlight the "Products" button at the top of the page and a menu will drop down showing the different paints they have. Ben https://www.glonation.com/

I tried it earlier today Curt and it seemed to be working even though I got no response to my query. It could have been the search terms that were used. Was trying to find info on airbrushing enamel paint. Ben

Hey guys, I'm trying to match a paint scheme using enamel paint to get the colors right. Tried using the search function, but didn't come up with anything. (probably using the wrong words or phrases) Do any of you spray enamel paints and if so could you give me some pointers? Some questions I have are can it be dried/cured with a heat gun like water based paints? Does it require it's own thinner or can something like acetone or mineral spirits be used to thin it? Does it need to be left hanging for a given period of time to allow it to off gas solvents before top coating? Will Dick Nite moisture cure work for a top coat or will it react with the enamel paint? The Testors paint I found only comes in 1/4 oz. bottles. Does anyone sell it in something like a 2 oz. size? What is a suitable solvent to clean the airbrush with after painting? thanks, Ben

Can't help it Mike. It's like Audrey told Hank about Hank Jr. "It's in him and it's got to come out". And I could be trying to get you to move back to Texas. Ben

Merry Christmas Mike. Hope you and yours are staying safe and warm. Ben p.s. It was 76 here today. Wish I'd been on the lake.

Thanks Curt. Hate you had to spend time over the holidays trying to keep TU up and running, but I'm sure everyone appreciates it. Ben

I tried spraying epoxy quite some time ago just to see if it was possible. While it was possible it's not something I would pursue for the reasons Bob stated above. I also had no way of testing the durability of the epoxy once it had been thinned to an extent suitable for spraying. I have no idea if the amount of denatured alcohol it took to thin the epoxy enough for spraying affected it's strength. One thing that makes epoxy so durable is that it goes on thicker than a lot of your other clear coats. By thinning the epoxy to make spraying it possible you are drastically cutting down on the thickness of the coating. If you then spray multiple coats to regain the thickness of a brushed on coat then your sort of defeating the purpose of spraying it. Ben

Couple questions regarding top coat, and lure assembly.
RayburnGuy replied to grosenberg's topic in Hard Baits
My bad. I thought they had the search function working. Keep trying it from time to time. There is a LOT of good reading on the subject of DN in the archives. I would go into it, but being that I type with two fingers it would take me until next week to put it all down. If there are any specific questions you have about DN I'll do my best to try and help. Couple questions regarding top coat, and lure assembly.
RayburnGuy replied to grosenberg's topic in Hard Baits
To keep MCU off the eyes just hang it from the front of the lure and allow it to drip off the rear hook hanger. (I don't coat the lips) You can remove that last little bit that won't quite drip off the rear hanger by wiping it with the corner of a paper towel. If you haven't read up on how to store DN I highly suggest you do so. You will end up losing a lot of DN by dipping your lures since any exposure to moisture laden air will start the curing process. Most of us that use DN have gone to the "tap the can" method of dispensing DN and are either brushing it or spraying it. Same procedure for the tiny torpedos. You can screw the line tie in part of the way and hang it from the line tie. Also screw in the rear hook hanger and let it drip off the hanger like mentioned above. Once the DN is cured then mount your hardware. There has been several threads concerning spraying DN here at TU. I suggest using the search function and looking for "spraying DN" or "spraying MCU" or something similar. Ben -
Travis is spot on about setting up a bandsaw. The time spent properly setting up the saw will be well spent and will save a lot of time and aggravation in the long run. Ben

I looked at the Lure Colour Studio stencils and they do look good, but he only makes stencils for certain baits in predetermined patterns. I was looking for a truly custom stencil to fit a specific lure in a pattern I chose. Ron Teel, at LuckyCastLures, was able to make a stencil to fit the bait of my choice in a pattern of my choosing. No worries Jigginpig. It's all good. Communicating on message boards isn't the same as talking face to face. We can't see the expression on ones face or hear the tone of their voice so something is lost in the communication. Ben
