  1. See first pic for description. Oh yeah, I accidentally discovered that you can polish the black finish off of the Citica's handle. Joy-bells. It weren't pretty, but I had another Citica 201E that I swapped handles with.

    Pike of blue

Looks good! I like colors that are different from the norm.
  3. I would suggest the Academy H2O Xpress Suspending Jerk Shad. They're finished baits and so you can't paint translucent colors, but they're good quality for a very good price. Plus, they come with split rings and VMC trebles attached. I don't know how close they are to the actual LC Pointer DD, but I'd be more than willing to live off the difference.

Good to see you back, Mike. I like this one the best of the three lures you posted.
  5. Fellow Tackle-Undergrounders, I just learned from youthinthewild that he only got three entires in the contest. Stop and think about that for a minute - out of the thousands of members on this forum (17,713 to be exact), only three entered this contest. The lures were only for display and for the boys to judge - they were going to be sent back to the makers after the contest. How much does it cost to ship a lure? About $5. We spend hundreds of times that on lure-building supplies each year, but we can't spend $5 to mail one lure to try to help out boys who don't have fathers? I know for a fact that the TU community has a lot of great guys in it. They've helped me out a bunch, and just looking at their work in the gallery is inspiration to try to become a better builder and painter. We help out guys trying to learn to build lures - why not help out a guy who's working with boys who for one reason or another don't have fathers? There's going to be another contest in January. Let's try to make it much better than this one was. Youthinthewild, count me in for the next go-round. I'll have something ready to go whenever. Sincerely, Ben Maske

Thanks guys! Still trying to get better all the time. A friend of mine summed it up pretty well: When you think you're as good as you can be, you might as well quit. Those weren't his exact words, but that's the gist of it. Fatfingers and Rowhunter (and Solarfall, and Big M, and Jeep, and Tigger, and too many others to count), you guys have been an inspiration to me to always try to become a better lure builder and painter. I'm a heck of a lot better at both building and painting than I was six months ago, and hopefully that trend will continue. I still drool when I look at Fatfingers' albums here on TU.

    Stellar work there!

I love building the big baits even though I don't use them much. This one is a 3oz, 8.5" floater carved from PVC, painted with Createx paints, and finished with E-tex. It has nice, snaky action and from time to time darts a little out to either side. Now if only I could find some fish big enough to eat this thing. . .

    7,5" Epic

Those are some great looking baits!

    Woodrat

I've found the optimum distance to be 453.361 yards exactly. That's if you're using subsonic ammo; you have to stand further back if you want to use a full-power load. This bait doesn't walk quite as well as I hoped. I think it would do better with a longer and shallower body, but I'm probably going to let this bait style be for now. The bass around here don't dig big baits even though I do, so I tend to focus on smaller lures. Although I am working on a 3oz+ swimbait at the moment. Tight lines

Had some fun with this one. The body is cedar, the tail is paracord epoxied 3/4" into the body (paracord is the stuff they use for parachute shroud lines - this tail ain't gonna break or pull out!), and the lure is ballasted with a single 9mm bullet. Actually it may have been a .357 mag, but I don't remember for sure which I used. Thanks for looking!

Lots of glitter in this pattern that doesn't show up in the pic. This bait is one of my handmade lures, and my attempt to break the sound barrier (aka 20' deep) without having the lure pull like a 4X4 truck. It weighs 1oz and comes in at just a hair over 6.25" long, and hopefully it's aerodynamically sound so it won't turn cartwheels on the cast. PVC body, 1/8" lexan bill, stainless steel hardware, Createx paint and E-tex topcoat.

    Caliente Craw

Fitting name, no? All of the reds and oranges on this bait are fluorescent.

    Bluegill

This is a variation on the RG Bream theme. I think this is my best bluegill pattern yet by far, and I'm really happy with how it turned out.
  15. Hey guys, If the boys youthinthewild works with go fishing with him, that's a heck of a lot better than a bunch of other things they could be doing, including some things that lead to jail. In this case, all that's being asked for is lures, only one per builder, to display as attention-getters in a booth. That, my friends, is very small and very easy to do for even the newest lure painter/builder. Let's step it up here and try to help youthinthewild out, shall we? Tight lines, Ben

Whew! That's a tough act to follow. The detail on those baits is gorgeous.

I love your glitter-based patterns, and both of those baits are absolutely stunning.

Very nice! I really like the colors on this bait.

Very, very nice! I'm curious: what kind of action does a lipless glider (I'm assuming that's what that is) have when trolled?
  20. Glad to help! The guys that had me build this lure style specifically requested a tight action. I tried building the bait with the line tie in the nose, but I had to move it to the bill to stabilize the bait and get the action tight enough. It's built without any ballast other than the hook hangers and bill (saves a step or two!), and with the line tie in the nose it was too unstable. Moving the line tie to the lip solved the problem perfectly, and my reject-rate for this lure style is 0%. I've got some other lure styles that still get about 10-15% rejects, so I think I need to refine my building process with those lures. Now I'm thinking of making a version of this bait that runs slightly deeper, around 4-6'.
