Tom, Thanks for the cool tip. Looking forward to trying it out this week. Wondering if you could post a pic of how the grocery bag should look when preped and cliped off on the ends???

Anybody got any ideas how to get this color?

I mostly paint plastic lures and have been priming. It is hard to find a good primer. I did buy some Superhide White and plan on trying to use it as a topcoat and no primer like BobP. I also have been playing around with a clear primer for plastic I found a Lowes. Its called Valspar Plastic Primer and comes with a clear cap. So far I like it. You only need to spray very little. Beware it runs easily ... so I have found it works best to making one good pass. I recommend doing outdoors because it has a strong odor.

I brush both D2T and DN on my lures and I use a good artist brush. I wait till Michael's or HobbyLobby put them on sell. Check HobbyLobby's website and they usually will have a 40% off coupon.

Purchased the following 3M respirator .... Respirator If I read the labels correctly on the pkging it came with organic filters and P100 rated. It didn't come with a bag so would it be ok to keep it in a large zip-loc to keep the filters from drying out?
-
I get my eyes from Predator Bass Baits and haven't been disappointed yet ... plus great customer service to add. I've seen the prism tape at Bass Pro Shops.

I can see where this would be pretty simple for guys who shoot paint for a living ... but after researching it gets kind of confusing ... at least for me. Just so I'm clear on the subject ... A respirator that is rated at P100 WOULD protect against any type of water based paints? If I go with a respirator that has an organic filter also then I will be even more protected even if I shoot the occasional lacquer paint? Sound about right. Going to try buy one today. Thanks again for the input .... been a good discussion.

Thanks for the info/advice guys. I figured just a good air supply that would sweep the particles away would be enough ... but I'm looking at taking that extra step to protect my health and lungs as I do more and more painting. I looked around at places like Lowes and found one that had P100 rating so if I understand that would be good enough to protect against what I'm painting with now ... BUT not any type of solvent based paints? Also saw a few that had organic filters like was mentioned and they were with respirators that were listed as Dual Cartridge Respirators. So if it is a dual cartridge then it propably has a organic filter and mention it on the pkg? Thanks.

I know this subject has been talked about on the side in other threads but I was wondering if some advice can be given on what type of mask one needs for painting. Right now I mainly shoot water based paints like Createx, Polytranspar, Wildlife & some Model Master Acrylics. I was thinking of getting one that is safe for lacquers, etc. in case I shoot lacquer. How do I tell if the mask/respirator is for water based applications and/or solvent based applications? Is there any type of safety approval code that distinguishes them? Thanks.

Thanks for the advice. I tried sanding out a bad spot on a lure coated with D2T. Wet sanded it and it left a foggy look in the coat. After recoating with D2T the foggy look was still there.

Finally got around to using DN and decided to brush it on like some do and hung it up to dry. After it set up I noticed a bump/ wave on one side of the lure where it didn't settle. I think it was due to brushing it on too thick maybe. Can I use wet/dry sandpaper to sand down the blemish and re-coat?

Just started using the DN that I have. I witnessed the same problem that BobP described. I have been brushing the DN on and after about 5 lures the wrinkle problem occurred. I was brushing the DN on and as I was brushing some on I watched the paint wrinkle before my eyes. The other 5 did fine and I put them on a drying wheel. Guess I won't be doing that anymore. My question for those that have been using DN for awhile ... if I brush it on and then hang it to dry will there be a "glob" of DN on the end where is all ran too? Or will it all run off the lure leaving a smooth finish on the end of the lure?

My area is around 15 x 15 and it is not insulated. I've looked at few places like Wal-Mart, Home Depot & Lowes and was wondering if one the portable heaters for a Large Room or Med. Room would be fine that has 2 settings.
-
With the temps here the south finally dipping I'm going to need a portable heater for my work area. I thought I would ask and see if anyone had any suggestions on good portable electric heater for a work area. Been looking and there seem to be 100s of them out there. I was hoping to find a overhead heater like what Marvin Heaters used to make before they went out of business .... but no luck. Any suggestions ..... Kind (ceramic, etc.) Brand, area of heating, etc. Thanks.

Net Man, Can you post a pic of a fin you did with this method? Thanks.

River, I use different combs. If I want to create different widths I will put tape across the whole comb and then w/ an x-acto knife cut out the tape between the teeth I want to use.

What about on plastic baits? And by primer I mean something that helps paint adhere.
-
Crash, At the moment I cover my baits with a white primer which you can find at Michael's also made by Valspar. There is A LOT of info on the site about topcoating. The 2 most used are Dick Nite's and Devcon 2 Ton epoxy. You can get the D2T at either a Ace Hardware or Bass Pro Shops. You can also order online from several places...try TowerHobbies.com I'm using the D2T right now. It is a 2 part expoxy that you have to mix up and brush on. You will also need a drying wheel to turn the bait while the epoxy is setting. The drying wheel helps the epoxy to set up level. I can send you a pic of mine. I think it cost me about $25-30 to build.

Can you use Polytranspar Superhide White in place of a primer? I currently am covering my baits w/ a white primer. Was wondering if I could just shoot Superhide White to cover the bait instead of a primer. If so, does it matter if it is the water based or lacquer?

startos201, The way I got started was I got my hands on Amistad Tackle's DVD on painting baits and watched it and thought that looked like something I would enjoy and could do. Then got on the web in search of more info and came across TU and that is where I got most of my info and "how-to's" and started playing. The people here are great and very helpful. This is the only site I visit when I need info or need to know how to do something.

Crash08, I use Createx, Polyranspar and Wildlife mostly ... water based. Like most guys I use all sorts of things for my scales. You can use what is called Tule (find at Wal-Mart, HobbyLobby, Michaels), Minnow Net, etc. You can even use the bag that small tomatoes and garlic comes in. I look for anything that will give me a scale look. With the bait on a x-acto knife handle I cover the bait with the scale net and clamp it around the bottom w/ cloths pins or whatever. Shoot my color( done in light coats), then hit it w/some light heat from a heat gun or blow dryer (I hit the bait w/heat for just a few seconds. Don't want the paint to dry ... net will stick and pull your work up) and then carefully pull your netting off. I practiced shooting paint through net before attempting on a bait to find out how much or how little is needed. I did mess up a few before I got what I wanted ... PM w/ an email address I can send you a pic of what I'm talking about with the x-acto knife if that would help.

I got into custom painting baits a couple of months ago and found this great website and have learned a lot from it. Wanted to share some of my work so far.

I found some 2" shrink tubing and have read where a few have used shrink tubing to make their stencils. The 2" seem a little big (it has a 2:1 ratio of shrinkage) ... so I was wanting to know from those who have done this what size bait did you use the tubing on?
