  1. As soon as the mold fills stop at the slightest resistance . Then raise the injector a tiny bit continue to dribble a small stream of plastic over the hole until it pools and runs down the outside of the mold. Just a guess on my part having done one or two .
  2. After the above find all your old winter socks drop the molds in them . Keeps the crud in the air from sticking to the oil on them and if you have to move them around like in a tool box or something. It saves clanking them together.
  3. Check with Ziener's Bass Shop in Kansas has access to Do-It products . Worth , Johnson Bag co. , U-Line , If you are looking for Quantities of 100 0r less Lure Parts Online , Barlowe's Tackle ' Jann's Net Craft. There are a host of others . Prices aren't much different once shipping is added . Buy bags in not less than a thousand they go like wild fire because they get used for not only packaging but storing hooks heads and parts.
  4. I'm looking for a source for 12 ft. rod blanks fiberglass , Lumiglass would be great . I have been out of touch with rod building so long I have no Idea where to get the blanks and supplies needed . Rumor has it that Guide Rod is going out of business . Does anyone know if this is true. I would appreciate any and all feed back .
  5. If you are in a hurry I'd try Bears because he is close to that area as far as shipping and usually has one on hand. I would guesstimate about 3 days if you order today or tomorrow probably get there Wednesday.
  6. Left mine the same way . Got below zero here . I'm using it now . Just remember to mix he77 out of it before you use the plastic or colorants.

    Ament molds

Thanks softworm made some old time baits with it today . Gentle men and ladies I'm still looking for others Ament or Palmer molds.
  8. Thanks guys Glad the post served some kind of purpose. Vodkaman is right , I'm on the trail of a use for this thing . But that is for another day. I've moved on to a new and more unusual experiment . I think you will all like this . It involves volcano's and how to them useful tornadoes ( just an elusive hint) . Already has worked . I just need to fine tune the unit before I can post. Thanks all .
  9. Well its been a while since I posted another Idea . Unfortunately it didn't turn out well . I fell prey to the robo stir. When I got it I immediatly adapted it to a power converter since it was battery operated . That worked fine . It has 3 speeds Says the pads on the feet will withstand 570 deg. That is B.S. They started breaking down at 350 deg. took those off . My plastic was preheated before I placed it in to 325 . The container for your plastic must have a flat bottom and be completely level or it will jiggle over on its side . On high speed it will stir the plastic but as it does the wire leg begin to collect cool plastic on top off the existing hot underneath . If you try to bring the plastic temp up to compensate for that it will result in burned plastic. SO SAVE YOUR MONEY ! AIN'T WORTH YOUR TIME and TROUBLE. I posted this In the hope I may save someone the afore mentioned experience.
  10. I have a completely crazy idea. I'm pretty well noted for that. Thanks for letting me know.
  11. Think you might have something there. I'd like to play with that myself. If you don't mind me asking , where did you get the thermal paint .
  12. I sold my mold for that very reason . Just got sick of fooling with it. Be careful when you demold . If you take it out by anything but the sprue it will cause the head to have a curvature when using pure lead.
  13. Amen brother old timers is setting in forgot about that.
  14. I do all kinds of lures . I don't sell as a business . But I did once upon a time . I barter a lot these days. But I can tell you I've crunched numbers a lot over the years . Don't forget to add in start up cost for molds ect. you have to reccoop that before and after each investment. To actually make money at a competitive price long story short . 500 baits a minute will get you there . Molds and injection equipment that can do that will have a initial investment of around 250,000 thousand dollars depending on the lure . Sometimes less. This figure takes into account every concieveable expense right down to the spit on the back of a stamp. Remember that a business Is something you start and like to do . But it must stand alone as its own entity. Pay yourself first . you need a percentage for you and a percentage the business can use for investment. Sorry for rambling.
  15. As I understand it you have to change the bait style by 10% or more before you can use the original as the model or you will be in violation of any patent. I personally don,t find it feasible to even try given some of these guys get really testy . The cost for producing a lure is awful . The molds for large production run sometimes 30,000 dollars not to mention the rest of the story.
  16. Go to Hagens site they used to have a monthly news letter and tutorials . They are pretty good about answering questions and how to advice.
  17. Brass , stainless steel , and nickle or tinned music wire depending on purpose . Brass is normally use for removable inserts ect.
  18. Are you talking tapered tube jig head or the tube head with the bug eye. At one time the older model Do-it molds had both . If memory serves me correctly . The older model lure mold are getting hard to find because the CNC revolution has made it so easy to remodel them. May be a pretty long hunt . A lot of time has gone into finding my older molds . Sometimes I've had to pay a new price for an old mold. Ask a lot of questions and pics . Some folks just love to hack away with their trusty dremel .
  19. UPPER right hand corner of the forum page.
  20. CS paints have their uses but it reacts to to many things . Plastics for instance . The plastic will cause the paint to come right off a jig head. Clear coat , seal coat what ever it will come off over time . Use Devcon , Etex , DN You will get better results.
  21. When you fill your injector try turning it tip up . Gently give it some pressure until plastic oozes out. Then quickly place it in the port make one smooth stroke until you feel back pressure when the mold is full . Count to three before you move the injector from the mold. Should help.
  22. It looks to be battery operated . That's not good unless you adapt it with an external power source . Might just do it.
  23. Did you try going through the old posts in lead pouring . Because there are a bunch on this subject and a lot of information from people that have been pouring for 50 years .

    Hooks

I am glad you reminded me of that . The manufacturing of hooks has become for want of a better word illusive. What I'm looking for is the longest hook from eye to bend. Discontinued or not. most of the tackle I've been making of late is very old style. Spinner bait molds like Ament , Herters , Palmer ect. use exceptionally long hooks or you have to create a wire form for it. Some styles were designed that way some just took a hook . I had hoped some mfg. was making an extra long hook say 4'' . I have already checked with Barlowe's Jann's Just hoping someone had been on a similar quest. Oh Yea cedar plug hooks won't work they are to large of a shank dia.
  25. If you want to do a swirl try a divided cup . If you can find a couple of test tubes or long skinny type beakers you scan stick them together with high temp silicone . Fill them with different colors and different levels so that your base color empties just as the top color starts out of the tube. That way you can heat both colors at the same time and pour them.
