  1. I'm 100% sure that something reacted with something! I made a bluegill one also that had the same deal. Thanks for the compliments not the lure though!
  2. I photo finished this balsa lure. I applied two coats solarez to seal it, then sprayed loctite spray adhesive and applied my photo, which was put on foil using loctite. I then applied another coat of solarez mixed with glitter. And finally finished with Bob Smith 30 minute epoxy. I took it out the next day and caught an eight lb catfish (dang)! On the way home I noticed the red streaks and thought it was blood. But it's not, the paint somehow bled and it looks kinda nice, like the crappie is bleeding. However I don't know what caused it! Any ideas? Thanks Rob
  3. Mark, does the ca glue turn brown in the sun? I've been using D2t to glue screw eyes in, but not sure if its necessary!
  4. I weigh my epoxy also. I use bob smith which is similar to d2t. With a new bottle the epoxy weighs 320 grams and the hardener weighs 260 grams. So I mix 16 grams epoxy with 13 grams hardener to coat two lures! Works for me.
  5. Those eBay eyes are being sold by bustinbassbaits! Just sayin.
  6. Here's the link to JR Hopkins http://www.johnscrankbait.com/Pages/default.aspx
  7. That's what jr Hopkins uses on his dvd
  8. Almost every lure I finished with solarez has cracked. But none have water damage.
  9. I've been getting cracks on some lures, but no water damage so far!
  10. Dip in pull out ASAP! Do not be cheap and let excess drip back into the product. Quick in quick out.
  11. My advise is simple, buy jr Hopkins DVD!
  12. I have found a couple things I really like about solarez. It is easy to apply as a sealer to balsa baits! Two coats and sands baby butt smooth. Also works great on white lures, all the baits I've coated with eyed, d2t, and bob smith have turned yellow.
  13. I've tried the whole save a few bucks route on clear coats. Believe me it's cheaper to just buy the tried and true epoxies! I'm not saying there are not some undiscovered top coats. But if you are not looking to spend a bunch of money just get some d2t or bob smith 30 min!
  14. I agree weight the lure before hand, I've actually noticed that changing hooks makes a difference on fish catching! If you need to go to smaller hooks after you finish the lure.
  15. 3"x3"x18" piece of balsa at hobby lobby costs 8$ , with. 40% off coupon it's 5$. I can get at least 50 2" lures out of it. So that's .10 cents. Lips I buy from Lurecraft, 10 for 2.50$ that's another .25 cents. Hooks from captain hooks, vmc 100 for 17$ that's .34 cents, that's how I came up with .75 cents, just saying! Time making a lure is extrA, but I don't charge for that!
  16. I figure I can built a crank bait for probably 75 cents, but its not about the cost for me, it's something about building crank baits that makes it much more rewarding when you catch one on your own creation!
  17. Thanks for the responses. I asked because I bought some six months ago to try as a topcoat. However it did not work as well as I would have liked. So it's just sitting on a shelf and I started wondering? Rob
  18. Does anybody use this two part epoxy, too glue in their line ties and lips? I use d2t right now, but was considering trying this because its cheaper! Thanks, Rob
  19. I've built small lures out of PVC, it holds screw eyes extremely well. I was using gorilla super glue to hold them. Mine were only about 3/4" long because the lure was just 2". It's ultimately up to you to decide but 2" seems like overkill to me. Good luck, Rob
  20. I'm guessing people will want to know what type of wood your using!
  21. That's what I use, I buy it at hobbytownusa

    Dn Storage

I have tried both dn and solarez. The dn finish is much glossier than dn. But solarez is really easy to use!
  23. I like solarez, because it works fast!
