    Which Way?

I am experimenting with combining materials for some bass jigs. One has silicone "inside" and one has it "outside". I'm sure some of you guys have experience with this. I welcome your thoughts.

    Wire Size

What size wire do you prefer for a jig trailer keeper? Typical trailer is a Zoom Critter Craw on a 1/4 or 3/8 oz jig and a 2/0 or 3/0 hook.
  3. Thanks, guys. I recall now that this was mentioned in the past. I'll write it down this time
  4. I guess you just slide the head onto the pin/guard? Sounds like a good idea, with maybe a bit of super glue? How do you get the pin to "center" in the wee guard hole?
  5. What are your preferred hooks for the 3/8 oz Poison Tail Jig?
  6. I made the mistake of putting too much glitter in baits, earLy on. I learned to look at them in real-life conditions. The baits look good
  7. I live in St. Louis and have a place on Table Rock, where I fish almost exclusively. I have the Snootie mold but not the Poison Tail (yet).
  8. One option is to cast with the weedguard hole, about half depth, and fill with smelly jelly or that kvd chapstick-like attractant. I haven't tried it yet but I plan to.
  9. Thanks you, Sir. I have been using FB heads in these clear Ozark impoundments. We have no grass; just several kinds of rock, brush piles and old cedar trees. It sounds like the PT is my best bet. I want to try some tied with a sparse mix of hair and silicone and use a few different trailers.
  10. I am curious about how these jigs differ in use and presentation. I haven't really used either one and welcome your thoughts.
  11. Yes, that Popcorn salt works well.
  12. I have sought out low sheen to no sheen paints because the shiny ones don't look natural to me in our clear Ozark waters. Is the extra clear coat for the benefit of the fisherman or does it enhance it's fish appeal? I'm sure it makes the finish more durable..
  13. Maybe cut off the weed-guards and soak a couple jigs in MEK to see if it will lift the paint and soften the weedguard portion that remains in the hole. You wont have to worry about stripper residue and the jigs will be clean. Obviously, not all paints will be effected by MEK, though. I recommend good ventilation and fire safety when working with MEK.
  14. Loctite brushable super glue is also great stuff and it drys quick.

    Burnt Craw

Great looking bait, Mark. That would work well in our Ozark impoundments.
  16. I don't remember where I got them, but have some that are "dash", "pinch", & "smidgen". I use them for colorant and glitter.
  17. Good looking baits and nothing beats a homemade bait that is getting bit. I used to catch smallmouth in Canada with inline spinner but haven't been able to get them to work on our Ozark reservoir fish. Not yet anyway
  18. I have the Jacobs duel color machine. Love it. If you run a search on "Jacob" on this forum you will probably find a lot of information. Let me know if you have specific questions.
  19. I always wondered why they use that name. I have yet to see a craw in Missouri that looks like that. Most are rusty, dk olive, green pumpkin with a bit of orange during mating season. Not saying the color is ineffective, just chuckle at the name and wonder about what the real color is of an Okachobee Crawdad.
  20. I have found them very helpful by email and telephone.
  21. While tying up some jigs this morning (after watching some of Smalljaw's excellent new YT video) I found some Caney Creek floatation strip material I had forgotten about. So I tied a strip onto the shank of a 3/8 oz finesse jig. The material compressed significantly from being tied on. My hope is that this material will slow the fall of the jig and maybe raise the angle when on bottom. Do you think compressing that material reduces its float properties?

  23. Great new faux tube video, SJ. Love your stuff

    Long Hair

I really want to make a few shad grey colored hair jigs. Been missing smallmouth on a swimming grub. Please let me know if you are aware of anything that color, longer than standard bucktail. Or maybe a white color that could be darkened?
  25. I made the mistake of under sizing and ended up tearing it all out & upsizing to a commercial food service hood similar to this; http://www.webstaurantstore.com/eagle-group-hdc3648-spec-air-condensate-exhaust-hood-48-x-36-x-20/575HDC3648.html I found one with built in lights and adjustable fan volume. Watch Craigslist for restaurant equipment. I hooked this up to 8 inch duct to an exterior wall vent. Don't underestimate the duct size needed to move the volume of air you want to move. Of course, make up air has to be considered (where is fresh air coming from ?). In the winter you will be pumping heated air out unless you strategically place an air intake source. I got help from a good HVAC contractor and should have done that from the start.
