  1. Knifemaker I believe your concerns are valid ones. This rig not only caches fish but it catches big ones. It is a big fish bait. Will the fish adapt to this new rig before we lose those big breeders is anyones guess. Will this be the first step toward outlawing the rig nationwide? Time will tell.
  2. I have been using this one. For the money it is hard to beat. http://www.harborfreight.com/5-speed-bench-top-wood-lathe-65345.html Look at the reviews. Very solid quite little machine. The rigid looks like it would have some vibration. Not much steel there. I would try it first. If the price is right it and seems solid maybe ok.
  3. Been there done that a couple of times. Why the do we pick the thing up knowing full well it is not dry. Like a kid at christmas time.
  4. Don't forget talent. Something you have in spades. Any chance i could borrow some?
  5. Most use a pvc deck board. Say it is best. Poplar is also popular.
  6. Guaranteed fish catcher any season. Good job! Vic

    The "AXE"

jon boatin, thank you. It has not seen deep water yet. Only pond tested in about 5 ft of water. It found bottom really quick. Plan on using this fishing season. Hope to have some thing to share this year. Brad, the bill is 4 inches long. Close to three and half inches is catching water. I am hoping for 20 plus but really have no idea. The depth will depend on which line tie is used. The action was light with first bill I tried so I came up with this bill from hell. Still the action is light but a more lively than first. The pivot is at the tie i suppose. A little hard to tell with this one. The best way to describe the action is that of berkley hollow belly swimbait. It rolls or rocks from side to side.

Douglas, testing proved that on this bait there was no such thing as too far forward. However, if line ties too far back the bait became uncontrollable. It is more of a relationship between bib lip and line tie position. If line tie is too high on most baits, the bait will be uncontrollable. The trick is to find the sweet spot. Thank you for your interest. Vic
  13. I would change the angle of the lip. More angle may give your more action. For experimenting, One might try a sheet of aluminum. If you do not have any , cut up a soda can and glue two pieces together. This should make it strong enough for testing. Then cut out the shape just like your lip. Next temp install bib in the bait and bend the bill to a variety of angles and see what happens. Good luck! Vic
  14. I am novice at best but definitely must have an idea of what your going to do before you start doing it. Something I do is draw the shape of the lure on the back of a paper plate. Then paint it . If I like, I use it as a reference for what i want to do later. Most painters have the subject they are trying to copy in front of them. Fishnart's latest paint job is a perfect example. He shows you the subject photo with the lure he painted. The photo is more than a prop; it is what he used as a reference. If he wanted to know what to do next, he looks at the photo. This technique is a proven winner. Good luck! Vic

Thank you fellow carvers. All but the first bait are ballast free. It has enough lead to make up for the rest. Really glad you enjoyed them. Vic

    Aussie style and bug

Dieter I still like the bug. Mine has the same problem but should be fine if fished slow. Who knows this spinning action maybe be desired on a bug. Vic
