  1. I've noticed people using paintbrush bristles and the like for fins on swimbaits. I used some fishair, a synthetic for flytying, and it seems to have some AWESOME action in the water. What other materials have you guys used to make fins? --J
  2. I'm far from qualified to give much advice on this, but from reading on here I found that ammonia free windex works as a nice thinner for createx. I strained mine through some washed panty hose, dumped it into the bowl, shot a squirt or two of windex in there, backflushed and started spraying. Seems to work well to me, though I have no experience to compare it to.
  3. WOW!! Puts my recent first attempts at airbrushing to shame! You've got some serious talent, those things look killer.
  4. They're very small neodynium magnets from the hobby store. They hold the hooks on pretty darn TIGHT. Stray metal objects on my work desk keep flying at my bait as I do the finishing touches!
  5. Just did my first airbrushing, which was very rewarding. Only stencil I had to work with was some wire mesh. Looking at some of the amazing patterns on here, I'm sure folks are using all kinds of stencils to get some of these effects. So what all have you guys used as stencils?

    Bluegills

Beautiful baits, I love the color pattern!
  7. A friend recently bought some very fine, shiney pigment for working with polymer clay when we were in hobby lobby. It's almost like glitter, except a thousand times finer. I suppose it could be the metalic flake thats in pearlescent paints. Anybody tried mixing this stuff with epoxy/ e tech?
  8. So I take it that I ought not to be curing this stuff in my bedroom?
  9. Its one layer of e tech. I'm considering a second layer. Right now I've taken it apart again and am about to do another coat on the inside of the joints, as they don't seem to have taken on all that much of a coating. Unfortunately I have no lure turner yet, so I just used a dowel rod, clamps, and a lot of OCD to prevent runs.
  10. Lookin better with some clear coat, smaller joints, and magnets to hold the owners up nice and tight.

    first airbrushing

I'm really fighting to the urge to go e tech crazy before I get a lure turner. Its sitting there tempting me.

    first airbrushing

My first attempt at using the ol airbrush, a lot to learn but its a ton of fun.
  13. I run into the same problem, I set the angle at 20 or 25* on the table saw and try to set the blade to half the width of my dowel. I think I've overcome this problem by simply testing it out on scrap dowel when I get it close, but holding the bait flat enough to make the angle go in the same way on both sides is proving to be a challenge. I've often ended up having to sand out my mistakes, which can be a very time consuming and meticulous process. I really like the idea of creating some kinda jig!

    glossed parrot 019

It was just wing clippings collected by an exotic animal vet On the other hand, as with most flytying materials, I doubt if things were all that pleasant for the pheasant.

    glossed parrot 019

Giant swimbait covered in parrot and pheasant feathers, topped with 3 coats of e tech. Too much time on my hands.

    parrot swimbait

Took a long time and a lot of OCD to crank out this beast.
  17. Ran into town and got a regulator and filter, about to assemble it all and maybe try it out tonight with some thinned down createx. Probably going to just cut it a little with water and strain it with panty hose. Also got some amonia free windex to clean it all up with. Gotta say, I'm a little nervous that I'll blow something up. For the 'backwashing' procedure I keep reading about, do you just cover up the tip of the brush and pull the trigger?
  18. Thanks for all the great info, I'm really excited to get this thing going. Reckon there's a chance the local ace hardware will have a regulator? I'm thinking of taking the whole thing down there to see if I can get the regulator/moisture trap and fittings at the same time.
  19. Thanks for the info. I'll try to figure out a good regulator and moisture trap to get, it looks like amazon has one for 25 bucks. I just had another realization; will I need an air tank as well?
  20. This is a bit of a noob question, but I'm about to do my first airbrushing. I have a paschee double action airbrush and a compressor I've had about 10 years and never actually used. The compressor is a Badger Model 80-2, Whirlwind II. I don't see any way to adjust pressure on the compressor so I assume I need some sort of pressure regulator? How much pressure should it be pushing if I just hook it straight up to the airbrush? Will it be ok to try it like this without a regulator? Thanks, Jimbo
  21. I appreciate you looking that up for me! Edit: I was just being really bad at navigating the site. The internets aren't really my forte
  22. I've looked and looked on their website to no avail, maybe I need to give em a call.
