  1. Okay i want to start using auto clear, i know that they are very hazardous but what the heck they give great finishes so im up for a try at the very least. I have ask around and it seems like dupont and ppg are some of the more common ones guys use, im thinking about using dupont but how do i know which one of the dupont clear fits my application? Im using createx & polytranspar waterbase paints painting on jointed urethane resin swimbaits, i have use 2 part epoxy and they go on kinda thick and i dont like it much, it kinda affects the action of the baits so my solution is auto clear. another question is can i use my paasche talon gravity feed gun to spray the auto clear? I have the .63" or .66" needle and fan cap on my talon air brush. any help on pointing me in the right direction would be great, Rayburnguy n the other guys hope u chime in thanks
  2. btw is there a way i can remove the etex off of the cranks? it's plastic strike king and spro cranks
  3. just one coat but its pretty thick already so i didnt bother with second coat
  4. Zbass thanks for your input, i did use pearl and metallic to paint but i spray a rattle can clear coat on after the paint before i top coated with etex, i did one of my personal baits the same way, painted the same color pattern with same pearl & metallic paints, coated with same rattle can clear coat before final top coat with etex and had non of the fish eye problem, only thing different i remember is temperature, when i top coated my personal bait it was a bit warmer.
  5. wel i painted and epoxy three baits last night, this morning i check and epoxy on all three are cure so im assumming the mixing was right, im thinking it could of been 1)temperature problem cause it was lower than 70 degree in the room i top coated, 2) some contamination, 3) i didnt let the paint sit long enough to gas off, i believe it was 30mins to an hr before i sarted top coating, i painted and let the bait sat in the garage temperature was about 70-75ish
  6. hey guys i painted some cranks and after putting the etex on, a few minutes later i notice there were fish eye spots covering about 20-30% of the bait, what happend? i use a small measuring cup, 50/50 mix, stir for about 2-3mins, making sure its throughly mixed, wait about 10 mins before applying it on the bait. any ideas? i also wear latex gloves while painting and handling the bait
  7. hey guys im looking into trying to make some jointed swim baits out of hard foam, im looking for a foam that floats/bouyant like wood or have the same density as bass wood or popular and good impact strenght, ive seen all the 3 up to 16lb foams but i do not know what it stands for or which one would be ideal for my application lol. I've made a 2 part mold that i used for casting urethane resin baits, was thinking of using the same 2 part mold for casting the hard foam, how do i figure out how much foam liquid to pour inside my mold or how do i go on about trying to cast a bait out of the hard foams? any helps or suggestions is greatly appreciate!
  8. thanks for the info sallystrothers, if i was to let it dry/cure outside, how long would i have to wait?
  9. Okay thanks guys, what i notice while experimenting with this stuff, I casted a few already and while I was messing around putting in screw eyes and sanding, Ive dropped some of them a few times by accident onto hard concret floors and have not seen anything happen, i also baked some in 175 degree oven for an hr and they came out feeling a bit harder, still not much serious test done yet but i hope it turns out good. on a side note im thinking about doing the resin and adding mb thing if this stuff fails lol. oh and Dave I really like the achimedes thing, will give that a try when ballasting thanks
  10. thanks for your reply jrhopkins I have a few more questions as im still new to this product, how long are you guys waiting for this stuff to cure before painting? are u guys light sanding before primer or just paint straight on? if primer, what primers are ideal? also herd some guys bake this stuff to make it cure faster, what are some steps to this? please anything I need to know about it let it be known lol thanks!!
  11. common vodkaman, Amac and the rest of the guys lol
  12. Hey guys, I pick up some feather lite couple months ago to do some resin baits, I went with feather lite because I was looking for a resin that would float and feather lite was the only one I found to float without having to add the mb's because the mb's were already added into feather lite. Now im getting close to the process of casting my bait with this feather lite stuff, so thought that I go back online and do some more searching, wel I have found that this material have alot of mix reviews on it's durability, not sure if its the product itself or just the users error, I didnt want to fish and throw a bait that would have things flying off lol or breaking in half if I ever cast into some rocks, anyone here have more experience with this material? I really like the idea of not having to add the mb's to make it float because I could imaging how difficult it would be for me to find the right mb's to resin ratio, but if there's a much more durable resin that does require to add mb's, then I will look forward to that if theres no other way around to this feather lite stuff.
  13. Hey quickdraw thanks for sharing this, I too was wondering about doing the brushing on drying motor thing like you did, glad it worked out for you, now I just have to replace my drying motor that never worked from the start lol
  14. why am i getting alot of saggy spots when i dip the baits? i basically dip and hang to drip, wipe off the excessive, hang for about 10 mins max and i see the saggy spots, this happend 2 times on two baits i dip. When i brush it on its better but i see lots of brush lines.
  15. hey guys just recently my paasche talon gun started to produce some air bubbles from the trigger button when i press down to get air comming and also the rocker assembly gets stuck when i pull the trigger back to shoot paint, it goes back when i pull it but it gets stuck back there and wont come back when i release., I clean the gun a few times but still did the same thing not sure whats going on, it still shoots paint though but just having those 2 problems, any ideas?
  16. Not that its no good, I just need to take it off a bait so i can redo some carving details, whats the best method to tackle this?
  17. Thanks guys, I cut the bait into two parts, it didnt come out perfect but i say about 98% good which is okay for now. Im thinking about making two little molding box out of lexan, since i have some of those laying around i could just cut with bandsaw and hot glue it together, how should I lay the 2 piece swim bait into the 2 boxes to get a good angle of pouring the resins after I get done with silicone molding? i just wanna make sure i fill the entire mold with resins and dont want it to come out with a missing nose or something lol hahaaa btw the bait is about 7 1/2 inch long, after cutting, the first half is now 4 1/4" long and second half is 3 1/4" long.
  18. thanks guys, now im wondering whats the best way to cut the joints on a bait thats already been shaped? I usually cut the joints when its still a block of wood but since this is going to be my master piece swimbait i didnt cut it, is there a way to make a jig to hold the bait securely in place so i can get a good cut on the joints? if so how do i go upon that? thanks
  19. mikko what silicone mold do you reconmend? i was thinking with oomoo 30, anything u kno thats better?
  20. hey guys just wondering how are you guys setting up your master carved bait in the mold box before pouring the silicone mold? are you using anything to place in the bottom of the box and putting your bait on top like a little stand for your bait? or you just set your bait straight on the bottom and glue it down then start pouring the mold? im also wondering, my bait is going to be a two piece bait, is it better to cut up the master right now and do a 2 part mold or keep the master one piece then cut the resins? any advice is welcome thanks!
  21. Atlasstone what are you polishing the solarez with?
  22. one thing i learn is to never leave paint in air brush gun for over 5 days lol took alot of scrubbing & cleaning to do. LOL
  23. how long are you guys letting the solarez cure? for some reason it's taking longer than 3mins to cure my baits on the GE black light, If I do the 30 secs on each side for 3 mins it still has a sticky touch to it, if i let it sit on the light for 3 mins straight it feels much harder but its still not cured, it takes more like 10-15 mins to cure the solarez with the GE black light, if i lay it out in the sun it cures much faster but takes about 5-8mins or so.
  24. hey guys im not sure if i have posted this but im having a difficult time drilling a straight through hole on my baits with my drill press. I have a vice that holds the lure securely & tightly and I position the lure as good as i can to drill a straight through hole from top to bottom of the bait but once it gets towards the middle the bit starts to wonder off. how are you guys doing this? do you make a jig to hold it or what do ya do? im using a drill bit about 2 1/2" to 3" long and its the size of the bicycle spokes.
