which body are you trying to make?
-
If you wanted to experiment without using the mold and pouring lead just use a rubber core sinker and crush it with a pair of pliers... if you don't want it to move just add a little D2T to the ends should work just fine and you can get some really big and heavy rubber core sinkers
-
Should have bought Fireline...lol after fishing in a few of the good Northern Pike lakes up north and going thru a small lunch sack full of spoons and leaders... I switched up to Fireline.... haven't lost a lure since not even with the really small ultra lite line...
-
After you paint it why not just dip it a couple of times in some enamel clear coat like for cars or something of the sort? I was more or less thinking of the big blades not the little ones as they are expensive around here to buy and I had some thoughts on making them... That and I wanted to see if I could make a big version of a prescott blade as well.

Good question as I would like to know the answer as well... I haven't gotten around to using PVC YET! but I was just looking at it today at home depot when I bought some new chunks of wooden dowel for some musky jerk baits since I need more more more ;-) I'm still trying to figure out how I can work with PVC with limited tools...,

we used to use a jigsaw with fine tooth metal cutting blades in a jigsaw to cut letters out of lexon when I worked for a sign company... and if you were making the same letter I would just clamp multiple sheets together all cut into proportioned squares and cut the letter out... you have to go slow so a descent jigsaw is needed... either with speed control trigger or knob... after that clean it up with sanding blocks or sander of some sort.

So here is my first attempt at the print idea on a spoon turned out pretty nice... spent about 3 hours in the sink full of water and it seems to be water proof... its a bit light but not bad for the first try... the spoon its on is a real daredevil... I get old used spoons dirt cheap at a pawn shop up north where my mom lives. -
well I watched this right after you uploaded it... since I am subscribed to your youtube page... great video as always...all sorts of cool looking lures... I was wondering what you made your lazy ike type lures out of? I was thinking about making some monster size ones for musky just haven't gotten that far yet... I would have to use a jigsaw to cut them out as I don't have a band saw.

is that fake fure on that one or is it actual buck tail I just ask since I have been debating on using fake fur since there are no shops around here to get materials for tying flys or buck tails but there is the craft shop

I was actually wondering why people don't just make there own spinner blades out of like galvanized sheet metal like you would use for duct work in houses then paint and clear coat them? The new style galvanizing is almost like a mirror shine... I was actually going to attempt this one of these days when I can get some scrap sheet metal from a friend of mine that does HVAC stuff...

any chance you could throw a picture up of what your working with?
-
yeah I've used bike spokes when I was a kid to make spinnerbaits with, since the northerns in are lake were nasty tuff... I still have a bunch of spokes in a old tackles box i've been using for pass thru wire on musky baits
-
what size wire is that made from? I haven't seen those yet around here... I just ask because I was going to make my own leaders from some of the stainless steel wire I got a little while back and that would be easy to bend up on one end and a ball bearing swivel on the other.
-
Well what kind of lures are you making with wire? Eyes? French spinners? Spinnerbaits? Prescot type spinners? what kind of fish are you fishing for as well? If your going for muskys or panfish... wire will make the difference and then choosing the correct tools.
-
I have to say guys it really does depend on the kind of lures you are talking about.... there are still allot of commercial lures made in the US you just have to find them... that and there are enough people here on the forum I bet... why not get a bunch of guys together and starting making better blanks and sell them... it could be done.... just my thoughts

So has anyone here ever studied ichthyology? (the study of fish) I just ask because you can learn allot about how certain fish see, smell and feel lures (food) in the water. How they notice small fish or bait fish going to the surface for bugs or the like...which can induce a strike near or on the surface... or a fish dieing on the surface how it flaps about in randomness, diving and then floating back up to the surface... most lures try to act this way but most still don't get it down just right....but close works in fishing. As far as paint goes it really does seem to make a small bit of difference to get more detail... scent can help sometimes... streamers can help sometimes to imitate bleeding, a gel with glitter in it can be used to look like scales falling off in the water... it all helps.

So I am trying this idea out on a spoon with a picture of perch as well... I super glued the paper to a primered spoon and then coated it with a thin layer of D2T I am currently letting it dry and plan on recoating the edge of the spoon with more D2T if someone can let me know how to post pics here I'll post a pic when it is done...just as it sits it looks really really nice on a spoon. -
good to know

So quick question... pvc lures... sink or float? and what are you guys carving/cutting/engraving with? Also will any of the ideas for using wet,n,slide stickers or photo shop ideas work with it?
-
ok guys here is what I found out; can't find mylar tinsel anywhere in craft stores or anything in my part of minnesota anyway... I was just trying to see if it was available on a roll or something... I was looking at feathers and fake fur at the craft store but didn't buy any... I've used the craft store feathers years ago to tie flies but not with a treble hook setup. And I've never used fake fur in anyway... I usually just eliminate a few squirrels in the yard... any thoughts anyone?

Thanks for the tip Ben, I got a ton of Ivory laying around since no one uses it... (my wife used to use it in water testing stuff) I'll have to look into the blood part... It's a pain in the butt around here just to find chicken livers even... I mite have to improvise with some pest control or something of the sort ;-) and I am not sure where to get smelly jelly...but I'll look around... I was going to buy a bag of the berkley gulp catfish baits and give them a try since I've had good luck with other gulp products in the past have you or anyone else used them at all?
-
I've used normal stainless steal pop rivets with a washer on the hook side with spinner bait trailer hooks... the other thing I'm experimenting with is lead free solider from Home Depot... its a little kit that comes with flux and has a plenty high enough strength to work for this application and just use a propane or map gas torch to melt it... the other thought I had was to use chicago screws however you would end up bending the edges and glueing the threads someway to make sure they stay together... just my thoughts.
-
What are Flashabou Skirts made out of? I've been looking at these online for awhile and I looked at them in the store a little bit...then went and looked around at the craft stores a touch... what the heck is this stuff made from? I just ask cause well...I'm kind of cheap since I don't have a ton of money to spend and If I can figure out what it is I'll just make them myself instead of ordering them in premade clumps. Any thoughts anyone?
-
Don't know yet this is actually the first year I am going to get a chance to try it fully since I now live really close to the large point in the mississippi river... I've been trying dead minnows, and some store bought stink bait, live minnows, crawlers... nothing other then small mouth bass yet... we'll see has the water warms up a little more... the average size cat in the part of river I am in... is only like 3-10lbs so nothing monster size just good eating size... got go farther south of the cities to get into the big monsters...
-
So just to add my thoughts I just got into lure making myself and I am new to the forum... I just recently got some stainless steal wire I thru in an order on amazon.com it was .040 it is mirror polished or something of the sort... I just made some large versions of the kinds of spinner rigs you would use for mister twister set ups and made some french spinners with it...and a couple of prescott spinner setups... this is some really good stuff and with free shipping... I may have over paid I'm not sure but I like the little bit bigger stuff for things...I have a mold coming for spinner baits and intend on using same wire for that... I got 25ft of it with the first order... don't know if this helps but its just my thoughts.
