yeah I figured the real fish part I printed a spoon once with just normal printer paper that is still holding its color after 3 years... I just put a nice layer of d2t over the top of it... so one just make a little tutorial on using tissue paper... I bought some clear sticker material but have yet to use it... my color printer died and I just haven't replaced it at all... been painting by hand with acrylics but would way prefer to photo finish since I suck at painting lol
-
awesome baits in that photo... what do you use to print on to get the photo finish?
-
I tried it once on one prototype shad bait... the rocks in the miss ate it up... not sure what the lakes in ND are like... sandy I would guess or muddy? I've just started using aluminum and find that super easy to work with and easy to find any hardware store has it for like $3-4 for a 4-6ft piece of 1inch wide. by 1/8" is what I bought they had thinner and thicker as well.

amazing how those cats, hit lures... the majority of cats in the states will only hit baited lines you'll catch a few on lures but most are caught with bait of some sort or another... the first place I saw wels catfish was on River Monsters TV show, I was dumb founded at how huge they get... makes are biggest cats here in america look dinky. Hope you catch some this summer that would be a blast to watch.

Now I'm chomping at the bit for a Dieter bathtub test run video LOL Also are those Wels catfish (dont know if I spelled that right) your after?
-
Pretty interesting looking I am curious what it will do in the water...
-
LOL I would catch barracuda of course then again I carp fish as well and people around here think I am nuts... until they see 20-30 carp get reeled in then they see how much fun it is and easy
-
Ah and the other thing I did with them in the past for the little ones anyway was to add those little plastic things that come with swedish pimples like the red thing on this one they also come with a yellow one... I think there called knockers or something like that cant remember
-
No Bathtub video oh and I forgot to mention they were all made and sold with single hooks on them as far as I know... I am guessing it will get even more action with one of those if you tried it... I did tell ya thou they had pretty interesting action lol
-
You've never heard of Grain Belt beer? Its made in Minnesota LOL I thought they shipped that crap all over the place lol
-
@ Saltwater you should have used a Grain Belt cap
-
@ Dieter the original lure just came with a split ring or nothing at all at the attachment point... it has a pretty descent swoop in the water when you get a chance to try it out... that looks really good btw! the lure master as always
-
All those spoons in that video and you miss the best one of them all! a Johnson Silver Minnow lol
-
Oh and Dieter if your in a really big mood to use your hammer and anvil to make spoons... might I suggest the Doctor Spoon (they are still made but have been around forever and can be fished from either end just move the treble hook)

To funny Saltwater.... when I get a chance to go up to my mother's house in a couple weeks I have a whole stringer of old vintage lures hanging on the wall even one my great grandfather made for Musky in the 1900's I will take some pics and post them up on here with as best of dimensions as I can and also see if I can find the lure I have above even if it is nickel size... also guys in Little Falls MN there is a fishing museum that has tons of old lures and I am guessing the old guy that runs it would probably have one of the big ones I might be able to measure up I will have to call him or stop in and ask.

I have only ever seen one bigger one 2in might have bigger even... it was at least 1mil I would (daredevil thickness) They were made from brass, copper, and nickel coated brass... the hole in the middle was to create a bubble affect when you jigged it vs casting it... they claimed you could use them for everything... I used my nickel coin sized ones for ice fishing vertical jigging and had good success... here is an article from Field and Stream with info and a link to old packaging... as far as the dish goes in the middle the bigger one had 2-4mil depth from the rim if that makes sense and the nickle size ones had about 2-3mil... I have just started using mils since most the drawings online are in metric. Good luck if you make one and hope there is a video to go with it ;-) http://www.fieldandstream.com/blogs/honest-angler/2013/01/vintage-tackle-contest-canadian-baits-spoon

Here is another oldy goldy from Minnesota they used to make them the size of a soup can top... perhaps Dieter can make one up to show us how its done lol They were advertised in midwest outdoors years and years ago as the illegal legal lure they were selling the small nickel size versions as collectibles I still have one somewhere but can't find it at the moment they have really interesting action in the water.

Well got the first body carved out did a smaller one out of balsa just to get a feel of making the lure since its so easy to work with now I just gotta get a lip made and should be able to get it to look like a lure anyway lol
-
All great ideas guys... I was also thinking about trying the ole penny rattle trick with this style lure as well... just to see if it would work or not... I was waiting to see if Dieter would chime in here if he had ever made one of these or not...
-
Well since I have thinner sheets of the woods Im going to do thru wire. And I did plan on using aluminum lips well I am gonna try one other random thing... that is metal as well... was just seeing what other folks on here had to say about crafting them with ballast and wood types and what not... since I searched the forums fairly well and didnt really find much on the design...
-
So it's been awhile since I posted a thread on here but I've been reading most of them anyway...I kinda went into hibernation here in Minnesota over the winter. But now I got my hand on some nice Balsa and basswood and was thinking about making some grandma lures as well and working on perfecting my jerkbaits. But its the grandma's I am asking about I have the design from a few websites that we all know on here and have decided to use metal lips on them since the rivers here tend to destroy plastic. But what I am curious is has anyone made the smaller versions of these... it seems most fish in the ole mississippi prefer smaller baits even if there a large fish and the most common bait fish in the river is the chub. So I figured I would try to come up with a chub sized grandma and try foiling it and painting it and all that but just figured I would see if anyone had any input on ballast and any other odd ideas about the design of this lure from large ones to the smallest size. If you not sure what a grandma lure is I'll post a pic below. and Wobblerbau has the pdf for design here if anyone wanted it http://wobblerbaujw.jimdo.com/schablonen/wobbler/#Wobbler (use chrome and hit translate if you browser doesnt offer it)

Paint Receipe For Walleye, Smallmouth, And Lagemouth
Griffond replied to tommegna's topic in Hard Baits
Well minus the thru wire part the other thing I would recommend is looking in the tutorial sections there are a bunch of how to's on to get life like looking skins... depending on the lure style (shape) I would get out the inkjet printer with real fish pics and start printing on some good medium and see what you can come up with... can't get more life like then the real thing... just make sure to clear coat anything printed really well just my 2cents -

Check out Solarbaits videos on youtube... look up Zander to get really close looking to a walleye that is the European walleye persay -
that is a really neat looking lure you'll have to let us all know how it swims

Catchemail printer colors on paper or clear sticky paper will always pop a little more with a quick spray of clear gloss... just make sure you get it fully covered with D2T or your choice or thicker coating so no water gets into the paper or sticker or the ink will blur up a bit.
