The other option would be to cut a slot in the bottom and put wire in after its formed with ballast then just use either filler or two thin sheets or balsa to fill in the gap... or if your going with putting in the eyes vs thru wire I recommand watching Deiters video from the tutorial section here... http://www.tackleunderground.com/community/index.php?/topic/23556-twisted-wire-eyes-video/ Also Paul Adams explains doing the first thing I suggested here... good luck with your build post some pics of your progress if you have questions most of these guys here will answer in short order.

Feathered Bucktail How-To By Northern Scripture
Griffond replied to Griffond's topic in Wire Baits How To
Oh and the only other thing about using feathers that is important to know is don't leave them wet in your tacklebox make sure they get dried off well either hang em out the car window on the way home or take a blow drier to them for a minute to get most of the water off of them.- 7 replies

ya know I have been drawing up some ideas about this before doing anything with it... I am was thinking about doing a thru wire with out the joint but that would make a week point and bend point if a big fish nailed it which I could up the wire size but I don't know if that would cure the problem... now on the other hand the joint... it kinda dawned on my to just put some strong heat shrink tubing over it and that would make it solid while still giving it some flex... I think solid would be better vs a loose joint...

Ok the question I have about this lure is nose heavy or tail heavy? and does any one know how thick the one in the book is supposed to be?

Can I make a recommendation Begs... go find some old beat up spoons at a junk shop or flee market and sand off the faces and prime them... and then just use your basic primary colors and paint those first... I don't own an air brush but I can say even using rattle cans it was a good way to learn to use stencils and distance spraying and it was really cheap... and with an airbrush you could have all sorts of fun with color mixtures and what not... and then just put a thin coat of epoxy on top and that will take the fish (bass, pike etc) years to get the paint job off. And there kid friendly to work with since if you don't like how the paint turned out just sand, prime and start over easy fix.

My only other suggestion for brush painting... go to Michaels or some store like it and buy a variety pack of brushes and then get yourself some decent paper while your there and take your brushes and use each one to just paint strokes on the paper to see what each brush can do with they type of paint your using... then thin the paint and repeat... it takes some time but its meant to show what you have to work with and what its limits are with not only a full brush of paint but a watered down brush full of paint etc etc etc... it helps alot... as I have said in a thread I started about brush painting the other thing I did was trace out some lures on paper and paint them as well just to see what I could come up with working with what I had... and if you think the paint is dull just spray some glossy clear coat on the page when your done or if your not worried about it thin some D2T down alot and coat the pictures of lures you made and will see what it looks like glossed then and get a better idea of how the colors pop... just my

So I am kinda new to the area I live in at the moment and the main area of fishing is the Mississippi River in central Minnesota... and since I don't have my boat here it has all been done from shore. Now there have been plenty of people telling me there are walleyes to be had in the river even from shore but I had yet to catch one. I tried jigging with a minnow, I tried bottom fishing with minnows, crawlers, dead smelt... still no walleye... lots of bass... no walleye... so yesterday since the weather was cold and overcast I went to the dam on the deep side and just started chucking every crankbait I had in the box... started small and worked up to the biggest I had which is the largest Shad Rap Rapala makes for very deep fishing... and finally on the good old blue and silver color... I got a small one... which made a great dinner for me... but that reminded me... in the fall fish are feeding for winter and putting on fat... so they generally won't bother with the small stuff because its to much work for the small amount of food... that is why the big crank got the fish and why other people also caught fish on big Husky Jerk style lures and large spinners... in the fall Bigger is Better...

This is making me want to make one of these... I have a very large original rapala template I made I could skip the lip slot and just put a 1/2 oz or heavier split shot near the tail in the body and make the wire a solid piece vs a two piece... could be a really good fall musky or large pike lure perhaps add a bit of bucktail or feathers to tail hook... a person could have all sorts of fun with this idea
-
Yeah that is a good point Dieter they actually used to sell those here in the states back in the 80's? just long wire spiners shafts to add to what ever you want...
-
Yeah Ace hardware is the Only! place I can find it here in Minnesota pain in the but when I am up north and there aren't any around to go to

quick random thought on this... go to your local junk shop/ pawn shop buy a few different sized shad raps (wood) that are all beat up for cheap and cut the tails off of them with a hack saw and start prototyping from that... it was ohhh 10 years ago I think Berkley did stuff like this with there Power Bait line using a hard plastic head and a soft body of sorts... minnow bodies I don't think were real popular then heck it might be more then 10 years ago even... they had a rat trap bait and walk the dog one and a couple other I believe I found a pic of the rattle trap version googling around here it is....

Welcome to the forums Begs there is allot of information to be found here and a ton of it hiding in allot of past posts just start searching around and doing some reading and ask all the questions you want... there is bound to be someone here to answer it...

Scrubs do you have the book there with you? if so just take a picture of the page instead of coping it cause that would even show enough to get an idea if the vibrax isn't close enough
-
So in theory it sounds like a Blue Fox Vibrax minnow only made to float almost or a much bigger version like this...

Umm Diemai didn't you have something similar to this ? I thought I saw something like this in the gallery

nice I am gonna end up putting a second weight in my first glide bait that I pictured earlier I am thinking we are gonna have to make that jerkbait/glide bait cook book here pretty soon since everyone is making them now lol. I am suprised Solarbaits hasn't added his two sense on making gliders on here.

Nice looking lures Dieter been super busy lately so I haven't had much time to get to working on mine again... to many irons in the fire per say... I have decided that this jerk bait, the one I drew up and a narrow body version I found that looks kinda like solarbaits are the three I am going to mess with for now... I am kinda limited on tools around here so that is part of it...

Thankfully my daughter is not around right this second and if she was well I would have just kept them hidden until I made them "look like they came from the tackle shop" lol now feathers on the other hand... well I bought a big bag of mixed one from the craft shop to screw around with and well lets just say the cat has a few new toys now lol.

So I was at the Dollar Tree today to get some cheap zippy bags and what not and they have all there Halloween stuff out and low and behold there are these neon colored hair extensions for kids in every color for $1 well me being the cheap person I am I saw that and went well that would make a nice substitute for squirrel hair or bucktail for a $1 so anyway check this out I thought it was a good idea

Well my other thought was is maybe I got an air gap in the bait where I put the first weight in? I wouldn't think that would happen or cause an issue if it did... just an odd little thing... it really doesn't need much more weight I'll probably just slip a small split shot in it and it should be good to go... No big deal to me since it is a first attempt I expected there to be a few hiccups on the first one... so the next so should work out just fine... I gotta go get some more epoxy to get the rest put together....

Silly question but if you sink test it... and add weight to the bottom how much weight does it take to make it stand up right and start a slow sink perhaps... start with that... you can always use dieters idea of sheet lead or pencil lead to get more in if needed...
