    Jerks #2

Diemai posted a link to some lure templates a few weeks back and I couldn't resist since one of the jerkbaits was soooo easy. 6 1/2 and 5 1/2". Need bigger trebles. The tinsel tail on the bottom one is from Reinkes. bill

Thanks for posting those, they're really nice. I think both you and Andrew put my painting to shame. I've got a full sized one and a 1/2 size I'm working on now. I've got some 1/10oz painted lead spinner bodies I may use on the shaft. If not those then solid and hollow beads depending on the sink rate. bill
  3. If you go with the acetone test on a small hidden section of carpet first. Try it to see if it melts the hardened resin first also. But I'm sure you would have done both. If it's a really small spot could you cut a few fibers in a closet and patch with that? Would a heat lamp soften it? Would ice harden the resin enough that it would crack out of the fibers? bill

Looks really nice Andrew. If you don't mind a dumb question what is spybaiting? bill
  5. Has anyone got an update on the Home Depot product? 2T is working "ok" for me but on the expensive side. bill

    Mini jerkbait

So how are these fishing for you & what's the weight? bill
  7. The instructions I've seen have bent pins. http://www.warmwaterflytyer.com/documents/Best-Messinger-Bucktail-Frog.pdf If you want more kick you should be able to use a piece of heavy mono with an overhand knot at the knee. Remember to use bucktail and not deer body hair. bill
  8. Great news about the good casting. Being strictly a shore fisherman I can use every foot I can get. bill
  9. They also make them in 1/8" shafts for Dremel style tools. Take skin off pretty quickly too. bill
  10. One thing I do like about those templates is that he includes weight, action, diving depth etc. Haven't seen another with that much info. bill
  11. I have some of their 1/4oz and I use #8's for trout. Look at ads for Kasmasters and Champs to see what looks "right". Depending on what you're fishing for you might need 2x or 3x stout or even a single Siwash style. I used to use doubles a lot for Lake Michigan trout & salmon also. Hottest lure of that type for me was always the real silver plated diamond Champs. Much better action and the actual silver plating has a totally different flash from chrome or nickel. bill
  12. Nice job Littleriver. I've been looking at his stuff for awhile. Have been doing some with marabou and a few hackles but I have a way to go. Haven't had a chance to try either those or the plugs I made for Muskie. May give them a swim tomorrow on a trout trip just to see how the action is. bill

Griffond, Mzee is right about it being 1/2" thick. I was looking at the materials callout which is 3/4". bill

Not sure about the balance point but the one from the book is 3/4" thick. Since he specifies solid shaft beads for trolling and hollow for casting with the same body weight it would appear he doesn't care about balance??? bill

    Minnow Chaser

I was looking through the "Classic Fishing Lures" book and saw quite a few similar Muskie lures by a builder by the name of Latiano. Gives me hope that it's a solid idea. He used solid wire traces with spinner blades. I have some 5" and 6" minnow blanks so easy enough to try. That was a good idea about leaving the lip on to start. I could make up some removable spinner shafts to try. bill
  16. Nice spatter. Was was experimenting around with spatter this morning using a tooth brush loaded with paint pulling back across the bristles with a popsicle stick sized bit of wood. Bears further experimenting. bill

Not quite. The smaller 5" 1/2 oz is a floater with just a bit of the back out of the water when hooks etc are installed. The 6" 7/8 floats but sits even deeper. Haven't had a chance to fish them yet but I think the 6" is going to be very close to suspending. I may try a bit of lead wire on the trebles to get even closer. bill

    Minnow Chaser

I had thought about that Dieter but not reversing it. I was thinking of grinding the lip off a plastic minnow bait like the blanks I got from wlure. Actually it might be interesting to try it with the lip first. I had a blank of the one in the book and I tapered it off and drilled ballast and eye holes. So I'll still do that too. bill

    Minnow Chaser

Only obvious differences between the one in the book and the Blue Fox and in the link Dieter posted are the spinner shaft is hinged and the blades are a lot further away from the body. Guess I'll just have to do one from the book. bill

    Minnow Chaser

Yes, that's somewhat like it. If you want to see it here's the Amazon listing where you can "look inside". Almost the whole book is available in that including templates. http://www.amazon.com/Making-Wooden-Fishing-Lures-Techniques/dp/1565234464/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1380905364&sr=8-1&keywords=making+wooden+fishing+lures I've got the book so if the Amazon doesn't do it I can take a pic of the page. You know the stuff here is so much better than a book. If books like this had drawings of the action and how it sits in the water they'd be a lot more helpful. The Pfeffer and Dieter's banana lures have a lot more info. bill

Kind of. It's as if you removed the treble from a double bladed inline spinner and attached that to the line tie of a lipless jerk bait. Blades are an inch or two in front of the body. Doesn't sound like anyone's done anything similar except possibly Dieter and he's done everything. bill

    Minnow Chaser

Haven't built it to post a pic. Tried coping a pic from the book but again no success. All I really wanted to know is if anyone has built anything like this, a lipless Husky Jerk style body with a wire shaft on the line tie with beads & spinner blades on the shaft. bill

Thanks Vic. Have three of the bigger 6" 7/8oz version in primer. Bought some more Apple Barrel colors today. Also have a couple of those Muskie #2 lures Dieter was talking about waiting to be primed. Only problem is I'm enjoying this lure making & painting so much but I have to get back to another hobby for awhile to fulfill some promises I made. bill
  24. I was wondering if anyone's built the Minnow Chaser from the Making Wooden Fishing Lures book? It's a somewhat thin minnow shaped plug with a front wire with metal beads and blades. Any impressions of it if you have or have seen it in the book? Anyone built anything similar? Curious as to if it's a fish catcher or book filler. bill
  25. Weighted version looks good Dieter. I'll have to do one or two this winter when building takes precidence. bill
