  1. I hadn't heard from John since early 2013 so I sent him an email. After a few weeks one of his daughters responded. John passed on early last year. A nicer, more generous guy would be hard to imagine. There's still a lot of his tiny stuff in the gallery. bill
  2. Remember Herters? Bought my first fly tying & rod building stuff from there. That was right after my dad passed away so I must have been maybe 14. Then later on saw this article in In Fisherman about making micro plugs for panfish but I couldn't get them to work. Then on to jigs & spinners. bill
  3. I used to silver plate my spinner blades for river smallies, trout and salmon years ago. Back when you could just go buy the chemicals from a druggist (cyanide) and use real silver dimes for sacrificial material. There was a book by Jed Davis on spinner making that got me started. Much more flash under water than nickel or chrome. But how you would do that on a crank I haven't a clue. bill
  4. Well that's that. They answered and said they didn't have a botanical name and the specific gravity "was probably around .5 or so" I'll stick with Janns, LPO and hand carves. I was hoping to get crank blanks in a basswod-ish wood. BTW, nobody's perfect. I saw a site where on one page blanks were listed as cedar. Next page just called them wood. Final ordering page said they were pine. He did answer and say he'd correct the site. Said they were "some sort of pine". bill

    Ghost Shad

The lack of eye contrast may be because of the light direction and overall tone of the pic. bill
  7. Dave, Sent them a 2nd email yesterday asking for botanical name and specific gravity. Forgot to mention that some of the stuff is made in the US and some in India. bill
  8. You're lucky Dave. I got an answer from the company. They call it a tropical hardwood, "ivory wood". But there's like 50 different varieties in SA, Africa etc. So who knows. It's supposedly denser than basswood. bill
  9. Jdeee, You may be right :-) One time in Jamaca we bought some woodcarvings from a street vendor. Next morning there was sawdust all over the hotel dresser. Dave, I spend some time on the Lure Lovers site from Australia and they use a lot of Asian timber. So there must be some good stuff there. I'll look your wood up. bill
  10. I sent them an email over the weekend. My guess would be that they are done in Asia of some local wood. Wish it was basswood tho. bill
  11. Has anyone ever ordered from this place? http://www.pebblelures.com/default.asp No hint of what wood they're made of. bill
  12. What about Flex Coat lite? I want to build some 1.5 - 2" prop baits and D2T is just too thick. Since they're for bass & panfish on the surface they might not get banged up too bad. bill
  13. There's a Light Buttermilk by Americana. http://decoart.com/cgi-bin/ColorConversion.cgi?PlaidFolkArt I want to make up some Heddon Tiny Torpedo lures and found a color chart for all (and I do mean all) colors from when they came out to the present. There was a brown on bone coachdog color I kind of liked. bill
  14. Start with this http://www.tackleunderground.com/community/topic/25100-bone-color-help/?hl=bone then do a search in hardbaits for a couple of pages of threads. bill
  15. Try Moose Drool beer from Montana ...good stuff. bill
  16. I used to have a 55 year old Kodiak Magnum recurve and a couple of others. bill
  17. There's a lot of great info here but in the mean time check out: homeluremaking.blogspot.com He does a lot of variety and you can also find him on youtube Hope that's not Chicago Bears? :-) Used to spend a lot of summer vacations in Ludington on Hamlin Lake. bill
