    Chalk In Devcon

Been using the Bob Smith 30min epoxy lately I get it at hobby town. Do you guys get a more rubbery feel with it for a day or two if you leave it to cure without heat (I put mine in a crude gearbox I threw together gets rock hard then) or is it just me. Either way it works good I was having problems finding devcon locally so decided to try it

Here is a pic of the devastation

I'll call them after I try a scrap piece just to eliminate anything I did but the lure is ruined after I coated it with epoxy and left it on my Turner for about three hrs while I went to a Christmas gathering I got called in to work so I took the lure and put it in my heated box because I don't leave the heat in my shop on and when I returned the uv product had separated from the lure and it looked like air bubbles in my clear coat. I just peeled the whole topcoat off of the lure. I hope I can figure out what went wrong and it not be the uv product but I've used the same build method for awhile now the only thing New in the process is the allumilite. The reason I went ahead and epoxied the lure was that I could scratch the uv easily. I was able to get the lure reasonably clean and I'm trying to level it out with solarez but tired of working on it now may be able to salvage it later

Well tried the uv on a balsa bait I made last night while waiting on Santa first off it would not cure in my nail light after about thirty minutes finally gave up and left it in the light last night until it timed out about fifteen times check it this morning and it did finally harden somewhat. It is glossier than solarez but I was able to scratch it with my fingernail had to touch the bait up and now I'm waiting on my shop to warm up so I can epoxy it. Hope I did something wrong and I can get a good finish with it I plan on doing some tests on scrap balsa when I get time , something I should have done first before using it on a finished lure. I watched the video and he does the same thing I did, coat bait, expose to uv,bait finished. Maybe it has a hardening agent and I didn't get the bottle mixed enough or maybe my lights not as strong as his but after thirty minutes or so of exposure I would think it would cure. I'll try again and if I figure something out I'll post an update
  6. Didn't have much luck with it myself. It will strip paint and crackle up like paint with moisture in it. It did work on some cork poppers I made for fly fishing though

    Foiled balsa

First foiled bait of this winter
  10. Mark the baits I've used solarez on do have a black back that will look a little foggy but I can accept this when I'm limited on time and still want to try and tinker around in the shop I plan in using it more this winter to see how it holds up Ben I am not as seasoned a bait maker as most of you guys and even though I had used Devcon for clear coating for years prior to finding TU I still have learned a lot from all you guys and really appreciate the feedback and info you guys put in. Devcons not dead to me yet but I'm hoping I have found a quicker if not better option in solarez I'm sure both will have there place with me thanks guys
  11. I've used Devcon , bob smith , some others I can't remember, etex, cs systems clear ( not an epoxy) , famawood, now solarez ( I've also got concrete sealer I haven't tried yet) just wasn't used to my white colors yellowing so fast. I'm usually pretty good at mixing my ratios but maybe that batch was a little off. It's getting colder here now so I won't fish as much so maybe I'll have time to build more and try out the solarez more although I know from one bait that I have finished recently that it's not as glossy but it sure is less temperamental than Devcon
  12. Thanks bob maybe my mix was off. The white bellys on my baits are more than just a little yellow. Back to the drawing board but I'm using more solarez now although it is not as glossy
  13. Here is the scenario I made a few baits last winter and hung them on a rack in my shop after testing then, never really fished them. Now after hanging in my shop for a roughly a year my clear coat has yellowed. These are balsa baits mostly but I do have one PVC bait that looks to have yellowed some. They were sealed using superglue and clearcoated with 30 min epoxy (2ton) (no I didn't use 5min) . So what am I missing or do you guys believe it's from uv rays or maybe my wood released air that got through my sealer. Any suggestions are appreciated thanks
  14. Happy thanksgiving to you and yours also

Thanks for the reply I'll have to give it a shot when I get back to tinkering around in the shop

Not trying to change the subject but does the pledge floor care cause any issues when cleaning your airbrush? I've read about people using it and even bought a bottle but have been reluctant to try it
  17. Epoxy cures and hardens due to a chemical reaction between the two parts the hair dryer will only blow the epoxy around causing an uneven finish although I have used one to get rid of some air bubbles when the epoxy is gasing off but others who have more experience at using d2t should have a more detailed process
  18. Yes they are a little pricey I picked one up and put it back for probably a year before I finally decided to break down and get one but no regrets since,I can't tell you how much money it's saved me I know it's paid for itself multiple times by now. The thing I like most about it over the knockers is the amount of control you have being able to put direct pressure on whatever your trying to retrieve it works well above water to when a tree steps in front of your cast as I'm sure I'm not the only one who has had this happen
  19. Although they won't reach 60ft depths I really like the extension pole type retrievers I think mine will reach 20ft and as I don't usually fish water deeper than that they work great I ended up giving the retriever I had that was like the ones in the pictures above to a fishing buddy I really think if you guys give the extension pole type a try you'll love them to
  20. You guys using the flashabou should also look into the pen stripping used on the RC racing cars it comes in alot of different widths and has adhesive backing but I like both
  21. Can anyone tell me how old they think these rapala baits are and there name. I know they are not that old just curious picked them up at a pawn shop cheap and they are in great condition they still have a metal lip also has anyone ever seen one of the crankbaits in the other picture in their area it says it's made by Mike Cordell Cottons son I saw it in a bargain bin and decided to try it out. Thanks for any info I know Atleast one of you guys will have the answers.. I still haven't solved the picture coming out wrong problem sorry
  22. That's new clean floor I just found it myself 2 days before those pictures were taken but I'm sure I'll loose it again soon
  23. Lawyers can't get blood from a turnip but maybe they could help me get the pics to come out right
