  1. Cool so I guess I will have to try to make one , but with all the lure building I have planned, this winter is starting to look too short
  2. Yes the light line concept sort of pulls the bait out of normal usage too many pike , I understand the normal usage is clear water do you think you could get away with braid and a flouro leader with out dampening the action away. How deep can you work them on the countdown, could almost see a walleye going for this in the right conditions
  3. What is the difference between a spybait and an old school prop bait , at least the one lure making book seemed to indicated there was such a thing, though all I have ever seen was floating buzz baits for sale.
  4. That just looks like pearl powder, you should be able to find an equivalent in an art supply store.
  5. OK let me see if I got this Pledge floor finish is essentially a clear acrylic base? Could I then mix pledge with pearl powder (given the powder is fine enough to shoot) and make my own paint, I have this great rainbow trout pink from before I had colorant for my soft plastics that would be great to use. It could also be useful in making transparent colors it seems when you add enough reducer to get a color transparent the viscosity is so low it’s hard to use(at least for this newbie). Following the thought of grocery store chemicals a friend has recommended using the cleaning product “fantastic” vs window cleaner (the ammonia thing), he tells me that chemically it is basically the same as commercial airbrush cleaner. Can anyone confirm?
  6. For as much as color does not matter as a pike fisherman I have caught hundreds of pike color X and white spoons I have a red head white body super shadrap that has no teeth marks on it where a more "natural" shad is well an truly chewed up. Color does not matter until it does! That is why I started down this path the ability to have options
  7. Those look cool, I tried surfcasting the last family trip a few years ago in Mazatlan , did not catch any fish on lures but I did have a couple of fun evenings dipping chunks of squid and catching saltwater catfish. It's hard to gauge length. The poopers I picked for that trip (Roberts Rangers , cotton cordell ) were big lures 4-6" 2-4 oz. I think the idea has potential, though I have very little experience (just that one trip and land locked the rest of my time). Mind you I am also thinking about a variant for ice fishing, something with a midpoint mount that shoots out like a jigging rap.
  8. Yea software wise I am good any number of things manipulate the plan, it was more how to work the ratios of length width and height. So I guess there is some experimenting in the future.
  9. So I have been playing with Paul Adams Phox minnow I like the profile but I want to upscale it. Since it is based off of ¼” balsa, I thought to base the up scaled version on 3/8” and just run the plans over the photo copier with a 50% increase. I don’t want a third hook hanger if I can get away with it But I would expect the addition would not be too hard. I’ll be using the same ¼” lead wire for ballast so I know there will be some mucking about there. But Is that possible or are there issue that don’t scale linearly. I would think down sizing would be trickier I would love to make some #3 a or #5 rapala classic minnow sized.
  10. I just knocked mine together with a rotisserie kit I bought in summer when they were on clearance a plywood U and a couple of disks impaled on the skewer. the closest thing I did to fancy was cut the disks with a 45deg angle to give the lures another axis of movement.
  11. I have been thinking about the UV cures, the dip concept seems like a win especially when I do bigger baits, but now that Alumilite has entered that space I’ll probably go that way, a local hobby shop is a dealer and will tag on special orders to their periodic store orders, I just can’t be in a rush, but no shipping, and no stupid mark-up is a decent trade off for needing to be patient. The devcon was an easy first try and a multi tasker in this game. I need a couple of gallons of soft plastic anyways J.
  12. -25c last night so I had two heaters going in the garage so high fume stuff is not really practical most of the time, but really unless the bait is for ice fishing I could continue to paint, roll in plastic wrap to keep them clean and safe, then bulk seal come spring time. When I was at my plastics supplier I asked about sealers and they have something that sound similar, from west systems so it’s something to consider. I am a pike walleye fisherman primarily so the durability is a primary concern, but there will be some trout sized lures so I was thinking of a layer or 3 of spray lacquer for those, would that be OK.
  13. Learned that lesson last night., no sags or drips (just hung to cure) that I noticed, but a few dry spots do I eat the flaw or touch them up, after I get my rotator built.
  14. Thanks , I was pleasantly surprised that getting something useful was not too hard, a couple of my teenagers gave it a try after a few minutes doodling on cardboard and it was off to the races for them. YouTube is officially a bad place for me to dig around on lots of junk but then you run into folks who get it (Paul Adams to name a highlight) and it like yea I can do that and away you go. When you are working for yourself vs making 100 #3 Perch that look the same, it’s only a mistake if you can’t make it work into something. Like that old saying “it’s not that a good carpenters don’t make mistakes it that they are better at hiding them” Getting actually good will take time but that is the other draw even though it was easy to start there is lots of room to grow. I was worried about not having enough bodies but then just today I saw a post on practicing on PVC pipe so there goes that problem. Color mixing Reducing Shading Pattern refinement Lots on the todo list
  15. So Santa brought me an air brush so here are the first few tries painting some lure blanks I got off of e-bay. Need more colors and bodies this is fun. A perch and a standard silver and blue. My take on walleye My take on Len Thompson 5 of diamonds spoon (did not turn out as expected but I like it) Rainbow (I need a dot stencil) ... Tequila sunrise ?
  16. Cool thanks for the replies, I was definitely thinking of a sinking plug of some sort, glide , lipless crank that Idea
  17. the first link I saw , just for reference
  18. So the other day youtube suggested to me I should watch this video on making stuff out of recycled milk jugs. Oddly it may have potential, the folks were able to make shapes that could then be machined into things. Basically shred it, heat it and press into a mold. Has anyone played with this?
  19. As a side question I have a large wood working compressor, I am figuring I will need some sort of secondary regulator to get the fine control? is that correct.
  20. Though not 3/8" another source of lead wire is in the salmon/steelhead section of your fishing tackle store the sizes I have seen are 1/4 and 3/16. It's used for drift rigs.
  21. I just ran into this, not directly usable, but my mind's eye sees a rotating work piece and the stylus running over a profile
  22. What about mineral oil(unscented naturally) as a base that won't go rancid?
  23. I am a rookie to this addiction, when I was making my first order I looked at some of the open pour molds. I bought 2 that looked like useful profiles, and went to town. The molds were cheap 13$ or so a piece, so hardly worth the effort to make my own at least of a "standard" shapes. I suspect there should be a 5" open pour mold that could get you into the ball park of the profile of those other baits. I sort of look at this like two different skill sets, mold making and pouring baits. For me it has work out not doing the mold making at first.
  24. You know I have wondered why the restriction on fluids, and now it's sort of a "well da" moment.
