As always Skimpy, professional and informative video! But u changed the music.. I kinda got use to the other beat
-
I use the same method as Travis, but i replace the vice grips with a cordless drill The drill chuck will hold the tag ends of the wire and twist effortlessly

Mine had cured for almost a week... Since it didnt work anyway, i was testing the bond between the lip and the mouth... The whole mouth broke off with the lip still inside To be fair, it was a rather thin bait... And my through line design leaves a hollow core, which could have weakened it more My mixture was: -1/4 fl oz A.. +1/2 tsp balloons -1/4 fl oz B.. +1/2 tsp balloons (So 1 tsp balloons to 1/2 fl oz resin)

Im thinking it was a YouTube video, ill try to find it again when i get a chance The description for my Alumilite said "user friendly".. I can agree.. Ill probably stick with it for a while
-
I just started using resin myself, not much experience yet, but ill share the little ive gained I asked around with this same question, and seemed like just personal preference... So i went with the Alumilite amazing white So far i can say ive had absolutely no problem with bubbles as ive read can be an issue.... But after trial and error, i found the ratio of micro balloons i need to get a buoyant bait, and it seems like ALOT to me I believe the more balloons added, the weaker the cast becomes.... I tested this by snapping the head off a failed crank bait with little effort The featherlite from smooth on is said to float on its own.. So might make a more durable cast.... But this may be what those fighting with bubbles are using?? I remember seeing something about the differences between urethane and polyester resins.. That may explain more but i cant seem to find it now...

Hey Dale... I tried casting the blank that i put the buck shot pellet in... I did lose the pellet, but i was casting in the yard not into water I have a test tank beside my house that i run all my lures through, if i lose the weight i can just grab it off the bottom.. But i havnt lost one in there yet As for testing on the lake, im not 100% sure the vaseline will hold your weight in place with the impact of the lure hitting the water..... Worth a shot if you have plenty of replacement weights on hand.... Let me know
-
It was a quick solution to fix a mistake.... I was doing float tests, drilling holes so my tiny weights could be squeezed in with plyers, then dug out with the tip of an exacto knife... But i grabbed the wrong drill bit and made one of the holes too big Looked around the bench, and the vaseline was still sitting out from a recent plaster mold i made..... So i globbed some over the weight and it held.... Held so well, that i drilled the rest of the holes out too Obviously we all have our own ways... I just began molding hard my hard baits.... This had advantages and dissadventages to it.... I can cast my test pieces and hack away at them like a mad scientist, knowing once i get it right i can duplicate it over and over again..... But, when i get a body aspect wrong (like a crooked lip slot) its back to square one
-
Yea.. Its like a kicker in a football game.... It does it's job, then it goes and sits on the bench Im the only one that does it that way???
-
The idea (for me) is to get consistent results.... One perfect lure in my tackle box doesnt do alot of good If i can get the prototype running perfect, then i should be able to hang it on the wall and make several others like it to fish with Im still chasing that rainbow.. But feels like im getting closer

If you like reading, theres some good info about ventilation in this thread http://www.tackleunderground.com/community/topic/22855-venting-question/# Its quite long, but several different ideas and approaches to the problem within My solution was a "booth" of sorts for pouring my plastic in, having only to vent the small booth rather than the big room...... It worked quite well, only wish i would have gotten a slightly bigger fan -
I found an untapped suply of lead in my ammo drawer... #5 small game pellets were used for this project..... But just for "finding out" purposes, i drilled into an old scrap blank and placed a 00 buck shot pellet inside... The vaseline holds it in place firmly, and it came out easily with a few hard taps on the bench
-
Btw, ive even been able to swim the test piece in my test tank with the weights held in by the vaseline
-
I just do this on prototypes... Ill make 2 identical bodies and put one aside... The other i will drill holes all the way down the belly at 1/8" or 1/4" intervals (depending on the size of the holes)... Then ill pack all the holes with vaseline and p0p the weights in and out at my leisure until i find which holes make good homes Then ill snap a photo with the weights in place.. Ez reference since measured the holes before hand Last step is skipping all these steps on the other, unmolested body
-
I guess it should also be mentioned this depends on the size of your ballast... Im sure there is a limit to how much weight the vaseline can hold
-
I always make a "throw away" bait for testing before i make the final product.... I found a handy way to hold my weights in place and have them easy to remove Tape is a good start, to get a good idea where the weight needs to be without drilling holes... But to be more accurate, the weight does need to be drilled in By drilling my hole(s) so the weight fits in loosely, i can pack vaseline over the hole to hold weight(s) in place... A firm "tap tap" on the bench and theyre out If i dont get it right the first time, there will be more holes... The vaseline also makes a good filler for the empty holes..... I looked it up, and vaseline (petroleum jelly) has an SG of around .82, heavier than the lure material but still lighter than water.. So i dont believe the added weight affects the tests much Ive only been testing resin baits lately, but i believe the vaseline would also work for sealing test holes in a wood bait as well I wouldn't try this on a final lure, for fear of affecting the finish.... But for prototyping, it works quite well!

Of all the new guy posts ive seen here, ive never once seen anyone come back and reply that they didnt like it In fact its quite the opposite!... Some even have more fun making baits than using them Your concern with safety shows you are already off to a good start!..... Remember, its only as dangerous as you make it...... Develop good HABITS, and make them habits so you never get complacent I like your approach, hopefully there's someone near to show you the ropes -
Ive caught several decent sized bass on my lures, but nothing really to brag about But this may be http://www.tackleunderground.com/community/gallery/image/14426-1st-crappie-jig-results/ Fishing in my little jon boat under a bridge head to head with a co-worker of mine who use to fish professionally... He was using a panfish assasin jig and i was using my homemade (one of the first i ever made).... Counting the ones we threw back, he out fished me 30-22, but he always outfished me, so i didnt count it against the lure It was crazy! We filled both our stringers quick! And then just started tossing fish in the boat... Since my boat has a leak, they stayed fresh in the water... But they were also flopping around everywhere and occasionaly slithering between our feet Also, not in the picture was about a 10 lb drum that ate my little crappie jig.... That was a good day!

I FISH To escape the world we live in today To clear my mind of everything unpleasant To remind myself that i do have patience To apply myself towards something rewarding And just to be near the water.... Something about water calms my soul!

I dont think its possible to go off topic on this thread.... Just a conversation maker discussing other interests Ive found making/editing videos to be far more fun than i anticipated!... Looking forward to seeing your work gone2! That first part you typed with all the numbers looks like Greek to me.... Same with the photograph discussion earlier...... I guess i need to learn what all that means I just have an app on my phone that lets me trim clips, add music, text, ect... Started out just making short videos of lures in my test tank, then started trying to film my fishing trips... Heres my 2 favorites so far Im a rookie, but i have fun with it!

The video looks so smooth.. Can hardly you're walking around with it.... And everything looks so in focus when you pan around....... Yup, i need one!

Dave, i played soccer too, all through elementary school.. I wanted to play football, buy my parents couldnt afford it... In jr high, the school paid for football, so my soccer "career" was over...... Competitive? Ha! Our team sucked, we never won a game Dale, youre living a little dream of mine!.. Ive always wanted to try coaching kids football, even wrote my own playbook one year I had a cool idea last year at Christmas.. For one of my youngest sons presents i wrapped up a bundle of 6' x 2" PVC pipe.. It stood taller than the tree, and he was dying to know what it was.... Should have seen his face when he opened it!.... "Pipes dad???"..... I also made a card and attatched it to the gift, but you know how kids are with cards..... "Read the card"...... The card was my hand drawn "blue prints" for two 10' x 6' goal posts, and in another box were 2 sets of endzone pylons...... He got a real football field for Christmas! We built the goal posts and concreted them in the ground together.. And i mowed the sidelines and endzones down If this was in my yard as a kid, my mom would have had to stock up on koolaid, cause the whole neighborhood would have been at my house!..... But i guess kids these days are hypnotized by video games, cause the field went virtually unnoticed..... Weve had a few small games on it, and he's out there almost every day pretending to win the Superbowl.. So i guess it was a success Heres a little video clip of him i made last summer Ethan field goal:

Im right there with you on the hours!... I drive a fuel/oil/chemical truck... Luckily DOT caps us at 70... Though my last job didnt care, it was 80s and 90s most of the time, with the occasional 3 digit week With this job ive been home every night for the past 2 years.. Work comes and goes, some days im home before the kids get out of school, other days theyre in bed before i get home A 2 day project might take me 3 weeks... Ive been at it almost 2 years and my tackle box still has empty spots... Sometimes i feel like a dog chasing its tail.. I keep thinking ill catch it some day, and i never seem to get bored doing it!

Well, i posted the link to the last page...... Heres the beginning http://www.tackleunderground.com/community/topic/30036-moment-of-inertia/

Dale... Heres a good read.. I believe it was posted shortly before you joined... Maybe you'll find it as interesting as i did http://www.tackleunderground.com/community/topic/30036-moment-of-inertia/page-3 Theres a couple of relevant science videos toward the end, one being about a pendulum, which changed the way i look at crank baits..... Basically, they are tiny pendulums..... As you say, moving the tow point closer to the cg, you are in essence shortening the swing arm of the pendulum
