    boys first lure

He's 9yrs old now... Flash back a few years before he discovered video games and you would see dad's die hard fishin buddy! Back then i couldnt even say the "f word" unless we were going, cause when he heard that word he'd be waiting at the door fishing pole in hand! But nowadays, the pole sits collecting dust in favor of an Xbox controller....... Brakes my heart!........ So i came up with a plan, i challenged him to design a Bluegill lure..... He drew his little drawing and i helped him bring it to life He carved the master with my Dremel all by himself, cut out little foam leggs and all... I helped him mold it, then he chose color/glitter, then of course i handled the molten plastic part We all know how bluegill are, so i have a feeling he may catch "a few".. Then with any luck, maybe the spark will ignite again

    Handmade Jerkbait

Shes pretty!... I can see the flat sides putting off ALOT of flash with that foil (is that foil?)!!!

    Handmade

Man thats sharp!... Like the body shape!... Interesting set up for a jerk bait, if u ever put up a video on the tube, id like to see it in action

    Top Coat?

Bob, its no easy task! And can only be done one bait at a time.. I just picked some up cause i needed a top coat quick to finish a proto, instead of waiting a week for shipping.... Noticed i didnt have the running problem ive read about with 30 minute.. Hang, brush, leave Ordered some 2 ton today, so ill have the right tool for the job going forward

    Top Coat?

My few finished baits have not seen much sunlight, most of them hang on the wall as failures.... If we ever get another sunny day down here, ill have to set one out on the porch to see if it yellows Been using Devcon clear 5 minute, since its available at my local Lowes
  9. I find Durhams Water Puddy easier to work with than pop for making your own... Little stronger and MUCH easier to separate 2 piece molds!... Somebody sells a kit with clear plastic molds, these may be good for beginners to see what goes on inside

    Top Coat?

Most guys use 2 part epoxy from a tube and brush it on.... Im wary of anything in a can, i tried poly spray and it ran my paint.. Luckily im not good at painting, so this was no loss... Dont know if lacquer would do the same or not, but i dont plan on finding out And heres an epoxy tip that some may agree or disagree with: For the 30 minute epoxy, you need a turner to prevent running.. I havnt made one yet, so i got 5 minute epoxy.. Doesnt alow much application time, but also doesnt alow much time for running

We could assume that creativity is a level playing field.. After all, there are guys who make a living as lure designers right?.. While were at work every day wishing we we're designing and building baits, they're at work designing and building baits.. That gives them the edge right? I don't think so.... Our porch/garage/basement/laundry room has one advantage over their factory... Risk... If we want to fish with something, we build it.. Nobody has to approve it, and if it fails, our only loss is time.. Time that we enjoyed spending, so really no loss at all...... If they design a new bait, it has to sell in order to justify labor, machine time and material costs.. No telling how many great ideas never saw the light of day because someone was afraid to pull the trigger And for any one who thinks theyve come up with something new but find out its been done before... Think of it like this.. If you hadn't seen it before, then at some point someone gave up on it....

Maybe instead of worrying, i should just set a goal to one day build a bait worth copying Im only getting started, but keep an eye out, i hope to soon be a reason you look in the gallery, give you something different to see from time to time...... And if i ever post a link to a TV commercial... You'll know why!
  13. Or better yet...... A "roof" over my bench with vents cut above either side of the partition into a duct above..... One fan/one hole... Filters where appropriate
  14. The idea behind the partition was to further isolate plastic/lead fumes, no where to go but up..... I forgot to mention the idea of a 2nd fan pulling through a filter for the "dust side", but then were talking 2 holes instead of one.... Wouldnt be an issue if floor venting is sufficient
  15. Dave, Ha ha..... Ha!!! For a second i thought you replied to the wrong thread... But then i realized you must not like smart phones Im reluctant to buy a computer, as we are ALMOST to the point of not needing one anymore.... My phone does ALMOST anything your CPU does But for now, im still drafting baits on graph paper while you're making fish avatars on CAD
  16. Is there anything the slightest bit useful for a smart phone??
  17. Hmmm... Yes.... Nice!!!.... Indiana deep diver??
  18. Revisit: OLD post i know!... But good subject, safety 1st right? I know its frowned upon by many to melt plastic/lead in your house... But i (as well as many others here) dont have a garage, wish i had a grand or two set aside to build a shed, but even if i did im sure the wife could find something better to spend it on... So... Im turning our laundry room into my new work space and Im faced with a serious ventilation issue... Our AC intake is near said room and the room has no door, its more of a hallway I plan on doing it all in this compact space... In addition to pouring plastic, ill be carving wood baits and flirting with the idea of PVC.. And eventually lead/wire baits...... So dust is a concern as well My solutions: - removable plastic curtain to isolate the room from AC intake - segregated/partitioned work bench (one side for plastic/lead, other side for carving/painting)... Plastic side under a hood, semi fabricated from appropriate sized ducting available at Lowes, air flow from squirrel cage motor (possibly purchaced used from HVAC service) to outside (via wall or floor??)... Carving side and a hanging paint booth plumbed via PVC piping into shop vac (thanks Vman!) My questions: - is the partition over kill?.. Would the dust shorten the life of my fan if i used it for both "sides"? - would venting via floor be a safe alternative to cutting a hole in the wall (its a mobile home, so there is space underneath) - if no to previous, is there a pre fab "flapper" or specialized vent for this application (to keep unwanted air/creatures out when not in use) - will the negative pressure affect the performance of our AC unit being in close proximity?... Assuming i vent via wall, would an "air supply vent" in the floor be a productive addition?... "Cirulation vs negative pressure"?? Thoughts? Approval? Disapproval?? Thanks!
  19. Rapala on Due North Outdoors: Leaves alot to the imagination, but cool vid none the less

  21. Easy to tell you arent new to painting!... Hard to tell that you are new to carving! Hope the lip works out for you!... Looks like alot of elbow grease in that bait!... For my 1st crank, i made 2 incase i screwed one up, managed to screw both of em up!... This time im making 4!... Hopefully at least one will make it to the gallery!
  22. The mobile link doesnt work
  23. I just found this thread (email sent), is there a way to view previous issues?
