  1. Is there a "standard size" for black fleck?.. Clueless I ordered .008 size in all my glitters, it's so tiny that it looks more like "black dust" than black fleck
  2. The other is DWP (Durhams Water Putty)... I use it, never used POP so can't compare the 2... But also got some RTV rubber and its incredible (so is the price)!!... Down to the FINEST detail! Even the grit from 320 sand paper I used on the master shows up on my baits

    Colors are fun!
  4. Makes sense.. I do heat slowly and stir frequently, but I did just switch microwaves, and now that I think about it I didn't have a bubble problem with the old microwave... New microwave heats alot quicker!
  5. Also a newby... I went with spike-it/lureworks pourasol soft... It's SUPER soft and SUPER ez to pour!.... Only problem I've noticed, and maybe someone on here can tell me why..?.. When I heat it, it turns crystal clear in the bottom of the cup, but appears to be all air bubbles in the top of the cup...??... Air bubbles don't affect (or even show up in) the baits.. And looks fine when I add colors.... I currently don't have a thermometer, so could be a temp issue...???

Thanks!... I messed up a few!.. And since they're 2 colors, couldn't melt them back down... The tops are a little rough looking too, but I don't think the fish will mind...

First hand pour.... I guess a steady hand comes with practice...!

First batch of jigs with plastisol and colorants... No more melting old lures!
  9. I had a clever idea that worked great!.... At first... Stole some of my wife's pure fish oil pills, cut em open and just poured strait in a plastic bag with my crappie jigs.... First day out, EVERY fish (22, not to brag) swallowed the hook!!!... But... By the next time I got out to the lake, the bag was stuck shut, had to rip it apart to get my jigs out... Thinkin ill mix it in with some other type of oil to keep it from getting sticky...???
  10. That makes sense, I'd end up with a little blue pearl on every bait I shot through that mold after... So adding to plastic sounds better!... No clue how much to add though..?.. I'm making 1/4 cup batches of plastic, so, would one small pinch of powder b about right?
  11. Also, I got a free sample of pearl powder, haven't used it yet.... I believe I apply it to the mold before pouring, not mixed into the plastic... Am I correct??
  12. I do write down my recipes and leave myself a little note in a bag with leftover plastic so I can see how it turned out later... Once I get all my colors down I should b able to add cold, but adding hot will help figure out new colors... Thanks for all the tips!!

  14. FINALLY got my supplies!!! Colors, glitter, pearls... Possibilities are endless!!!... The days of melting down old lures are over!!!... Feel kinda lost, don't know where to start..?.. But that's a good problem to have!.... My question... Went with Spike-It/Lure Craft plastic and colorant.. On the bottle it says mix colors in cold plastic... But cold plastic is milky white... Makes it kinda hard to tell how much color to put in cause it changes when the plastic turns clear after heating.. Is there a reason I can't add color after heating??
  15. Fish dont seem to mind the mohawk, but I think ill get some shears anyway.... Thanks! Didn't know what they were called....
  16. Where does one find the right tool for trimming the excess lead off ones jig heads?... I've been using regular wire cutters... Now all my jig heads have mohawks..........
  17. Also looking at Spike-it.. Will be placing my FIRST order (running out of old lures to melt down).. I could really load up on colors at 3 bucks a piece! But how far would a 1 oz bottle stretch??.. Should I shorten my color list and opt for the 5 oz bottles??
  18. I thought blowing money at Cabelas was fun... But dreaming up my own design, tinkering with it every day after work, then seeing it come to life AND catch fish......... Fun doesn't begin to describe it!!!!
  19. My 2nd bait! 8" weightless worm... 5 in the boat, 4 lost right at the boat... They like it!... This is fun!!!!!
  20. First homemade jig, first "field test"... The Crappie couldn't tell that it was SUPPOSED to be a "Crappie jig".. But this Drum didn't seem to notice.. Trash fish or not, I'm addicted!!!

Mark P... Looks nice! Great detail!... But where I live I'm limited to what I can find at Walmart or Lowes... Hence the Bondo, until I can get a day off to hunt down some fiberglass

JRammit, PM me and I will send you step by step instructions on the process for making fiberglass molds. You already did... I just haven't tried it yet... Baby steps

I like the fiberglass idea! Bondo is just for practice/experimentation.. Once I make a bait I'm happy with, ill copy it with the fiberglass and make it permanent

Thanks thanks! Took me almost 2 weeks messing around after work to get it right... The bottom half of the mold formed perfect around the master, but the top half was really "fuzzy".. Took some scissor trimming to make the bait halfway presentable... Next time? Thinking if I brush the Bondo carefully around the master, then pour the rest on top? Might solve the problem??
