    Balsa Bluegill Crankbait

I believe I put 5 or 6 grams in this one but the high buoyancy is part of what gives balsa baits more action. You can also sometimes let the bait float out of snags when you hit something.

    Balsa Bluegill Crankbait

First fat bodied crankbait ive made. It is the size of a lc 2.5. It has a really hard thump and deflects off cover really well.

    Green Pumpkin Craw

First attempt at a craw pattern painted on an unfinished balsa bait I had laying around. I based my stencil pattern off a craw pattern Bobp painted a while back.

    ...and in a blueback

Is the foil used on those the deck-foil like they have at hobby lobby. I picked some different ones up I'm testing out. If it is do you use their brand of adhesive or another? Zev

    Little Peteys

Thanks Bob. I'll have to look around for something similar. I thought of maybe trying the metal ducting tape but I guess it's pretty thick so the seems would be harder to hide.

    Little Peteys

Nice looking baits. What kind of foil did you use on the bottom one and what is your scaling technique for it?

    jeff's warts

Those are some nice looking craws! I like the color of the top two. I hope to try painting my first craw pattern this weekend.

    GOPR0057

It's attached with a screw lock but I have it recessed in a hole to hide the seem. The only down side to it is the single hook but the previous rat I made like this one seemed to hook even fish that were barely a pound.

Thanks Ben. I think walking it should get me a couple bites when it warms up.

    rat wakebait

this a a poplar wakebait i turned on my mini lathe. it has a swiveling hook hanger and a screwlock for the tail attachment. I painted it with a brush to give it a fur texture and then coated with 2 coats of d2t. see my other picture of it for a swim video.

heres a new rat wakebait ive been fine tuning over the winter. It is turned out of poplar and has a swiveling hook hanger. I painted this one with a paint brush to give it a more realistic fur look. The body is a little over 3 1/2 in long and 1in diameter so i guess its more of a mouse bait. theres a swim video at this link-

    4 inch Rat 11

Nice looking rat. I've made a few that work pretty good but I'd like to test out more variations of it to find what works best. Where did you put the ballast on yours?
  13. Nice looking bait!. I'm pretty fond of bluegill patterns since they are the primary bait in the smaller lakes where I live. I like the sparkle to the top. What color paint did you use for the top and is glitter added or is that pearl paint?
  14. Thanks for the help I'll probably do a test with the thinned epoxy first since I already have that n see how that works out.
  15. I have read the other posts about sealing detailed wood lures to keep carved details for painting but I was wondering if there is a way to seal them that it would be safe to test them in the water for weighting before painting. When I make a swimbait or a topwater lure I usually put the hardware on the lure and seal it with super glue then d2t. I then use a rubber band around the lure and add split sits to the rubber band unroll I get an action close to what I want. I've heard of using boiled linseed oil with features alcohol will this keep all of my details and prevent any water intrusion while testing like this? Any help would be great. *split shots
  16. Has anyone tried using the solarez clear casting uv resin as a top coat instead of the polyester resin? I really like the idea of using uv cured epoxy for a top coat but the cloudiness of it is a deal breaker for me. Does anyone know if this product is comparable in clarity and gloss to devcon 2 ton. If anyone has tested it how is the durability.

    new batch of crankbaits

I had seen someone twist the line tie like that before on the site here but after trying on that one I think it was not connected to the internal wire. I prefer the look of the other one tho so I'll stick with that in the future.

    new batch of crankbaits

Here are some balsa baits I finished last week. I got a chance to test them out the other day and they run pretty good.

    Bloody Mullet Pop-N-Prop

This is a mullet pattern popper/ prop bait I made as a christmas gift for a friend. It is made with the thought of using it for inshore red drum on the NC coast. It is carved from poplar. I used the some aluminum mesh to imprint the scale patern on some foil. It is weighted to sit tail down in the water and will cause alot of commotion on a with a good twitch or pull.

    Rat Wakebait

Here is a rat wakebait I made this summer. The paint job on this one is nothing fancy but it makes up for that in performance. it is carved from poplar and has a swiveling hook hanger. I sized this rat for everyday use. The body measures 4 inches. coated in d2t.

    3d scale crankbait

This is a flat sided square bill crankbait. It is a through wired balsa lure that i carved the scales and gill plates into before applying silver leaf to give it some flash. It is painted in a crappie pattern and then coated in two coats of d2t.

    bluegill wakebait

This is a wakebait I made painted to look like a bluegill. It is carved from poplar and is made with swivel hook hangers that are pinned in place by the eye screws and the epoxied in. It has a screw lock on the back to atach different tails. The total length with the tail is about 7 inches.
