  1. Thanks mark, I might have another look when I get the chance. ..glider
  2. Hey raghubir, good to see you on here. I'm sure you'll get some good info, lot's of knowledgeable builders and painters on T.U, as for paints clogging - if you've got nothing else just thin with water till it shoots.........
  3. Not properly tried it mark, messed about with a couple of small lures . I've not really seen anything that I like the look of here. How does the weight compare with say cedar?
  4. Thanks travis, I've also used shellac sanding sealer to do the same job ,worked o.k also . I think sanding sealer may have another ingredient to stop sandpaper clogging and allow smooth sanding ? I can buy what you guy's call laquer in larger more cost effective amounts and suspect it would basically be similar to nitrocellulose sanding sealer without the ingredient which makes it a sanding sealer rather than just a sealer if that makes sense.
  5. No ben, with most gliders I make ,each one has to be individually balanced in water, there's no way round it. With certain glider designs and types its not as crucial ,but with others, it is in my opinion . Basically just a sealcoat to allow balancing, and then epoxy over. ..glider
  6. Many times I've grrrrrrrd also
  7. Thanks ben, used super glue many times, still do often for prototypes. Coating say a dozen 10 inch gliders at a time ain't no fun with super glue though ,especially with many ballast holes to fill ! Cheers.......glider
  8. Got you woodie, I do seal with epoxy after ballast, because on gliders I individually ballast each lure in water , I use a quick thin sealcoat just to allow me to ballast each one, then epoxy. Really only an issue on gliders that need critical balancing, particularly gliders designed to fish really slow. Thanks again....glider
  9. Out of interest I've got a few concoctions brewing up, if you hear a big bang and the sky lights up several hundred miles north of Suffolk you'll know it's went badly wrong! .......glider
  10. Yip ,I've heard of a variety of plastics used, some of the hardeners are moisture cure but I'm wondering if the end result is similar, i.e a thin coat of resin after evaporation. Thinking about it though , you would imagine hardener type products are more likely to be using a cellulose resin. Cheers........glider
  11. Thanks bob, from what I can see l suspect they might all be similar products ,i..e some sort of plastic resin dissolved in solvent. Wondering if it's worth the hassle of making something, if at best it's the same as stuff I can buy which does the job. Are propionate pellets/plastic cups/plexiglass etc. Likely to be better ?........glider
  12. Thanks bobp, that's 1 thing I was kinda thinking might happen, I remember lots of folk trying the plastic cups etc. What about acetone based wood hardeners bob,are these basically similar? I.e plaastic dissolved in solvent ?...........glider
  13. Anyone tried lexan dissolved in acetone?
  14. Hey guy's, I often use one of the solvent based hardeners to seal lures for ballasting ,then seal with epoxy. It seems to me they are all pretty much the same thing , i.e plastic dissolved in acetone. Lots of folk use propionate pellets disolved in same, I also know that some other crafts use plexiglass also dissolved in acetone. Do any of you guy's know if these are basically the same thing ? Is there going to be any major differences regarding the type of solids used when applied to wood fishing lures ? I'm wondering if there's any plastic that would be noticeably better than another, I kinda suspect it might be much of a muchness. Any chemists out there ?.......glider
  15. The opposite of rose tinted specs!
  16. Be interested what design and material you used as well as what you mean by work well , got to go now though ,nearly 2a.m here and just finishing ballast on 12 big cedar gliders, gonna need my own lead mine soon ! Cheers .....glider
  17. Mark, it can to a degree, kind of acts like a parachute and can stop a badly designed /ballasted glider from turning round on itself, in my experience. Personally I dont like it as it severely dulls the action/glide in my opinion. Out of interest What size or type glider did you have problems with ?......glider
  18. Ces,if your stuggling for a drop belly pattern I can show you my 3.5 inch if it helps, you need to be careful with shapes, what may appear a nice shape in terms of imitation might not be so good when it comes to action........glider
  19. Like thiko says, the salmo slider is a good small glider,as mentioned small drop belly type gliders or any small gliders aren't gliding far as such. Smallest I make is about 3 inch and it works well , catches fish and worth having. I use it for fry feeding pike. I would recommend bohyant wood and and fairly slim, for a 3-3.5 inch lure i use 12-13mm thick.cedar or the lightest meranti I can get. Balsa would also be ideal...........glider
  20. Yes give the heat gun a couple of quick passes ,to close and you can burn the e-tex,to hot and you can expand air inside lure which forces its way out and will produce tiny streams of bubbles for hours ! Leave for 10 minutes or so and repeat. Remember it's the carbon dioxide produced from heat gun rather than heat itself that bursts bubbles ,thats why you can burst them with your breath . I prefer heat gun. ,It takes practice to get e-tex right so don't be disappointed to start with ! Good luck.......glider
  21. Hoffbossn ,if your using elastic bands each end of lure and lure has a lot of ballast or weight away from centre ,i.e heavily biased away from centre line of where bands are fixed to lure eye, then when turner revolves the lure can try to stay with heavy side down (gravity) it then gets to a point where it has to flip over. This leads to epoxy building up on usually top or bottom of lure . If you see this sort of flipping as lure revolves then you can have this problem........glider
  22. Hoffbosn, cant see turner, sounds like to much epoxy on 1st coat. What works for me- warm bottles e-tex if cold, 5 mins in a pot of hot water, Mix thoroughly, apply thinnish coat. I dont wait for epoxy to gel. No advantage for me ,if you leave sharpish edges you may want to try that, I dont leave sharp edges. A coat of e-tex can give you a perfect surface to paint .....glider
  23. Hoffbosn, how is your turner set up? A pic might help with lure on turner ......glider
  24. Cheers dale, the fin is for keeping sinking gliders on an even keel. .....glider
  25. Thanks chuck, the manatee style works fine, I like to design and understand my own gliders, rather than just copy someone, so I decided to re-disign stability fin -and ended up with same 2 designs I started with ! That's actually o.k , means I had it good to start with . I don't trust when I design something and get it apparently correct ,without having made designs that failed . This shows me the parameters of the design. Thanks again ..........glider
