  1. I was wondering what that grey stuff is that some lure makers put on their baits before molding them. Does it help smooth out small blemishes or something? Exactly what is it? Primer?
  2. Ah, too bad then. It was just a thought...
  3. I was looking at something called alumilite flex that doesn't require a microwave. Would that work for a swimbait?
  4. Thanks for the info guys! Would something like Minwax spray urethane work too?
  5. Hey guys! Does anyone know how to smooth the wood on my master carve without it getting that "hairy" look to it? I use 320 grit sand paper, but it doesn't seem to remove those tiny pieces of wood hanging off of my carving. Please help!
  6. Sounds good! I think I'll stick with the resin baits for now... Perhaps in the future I'll try soft plastics after I get better at making hard baits.
  7. Hey guys, I know almost nothing about creating soft plastics, but they have caught my interest. Just a quick question: Are there any soft bait making materials that don't have to be heated before pouring? I don't want to mess up the microwave by cooking plastisol in it... Any info would be appreciated!
  8. Words of wisdom . So much to try out on my gill now! To bad I'm starting to carve a new shad... It distracts me
  9. Wow, I never thought about that! Would this be the same with only single jointed baits?
  10. Thanks guys! It really means a lot to me! I'll post once I try out all these ideas
  11. Thanks for the input Dale! I will try out a higher line tie on my next properly balanced bait. I'm slightly confused about that second part, but with all the ballast and hardware in, the bait sank pretty smoothly, not sideways.
  12. Ben, So if adding more weight to the belly corrects the problem, then how would I keep the bait from sinking too quickly? Should I put more microballoons in the next one and then add the same amount of weight to the belly? Dale, Most of the ballast is along the bottom of the front of the bait behind the hook hanger. There is also some behind the pin in the second half of the bait
  13. Yeah I placed all the weight as low on the bait as I could. The top just won't stay steady This swimbait will actually be lipless. Please correct me if im wrong, but the line tie is above the x and the ballast is mostly around the area where the x and y intersect?
  14. Thanks for all the encouragement! I really don't want to take off the fin if I can help it, so I'll see if I can do anything else before trying this I did try putting the line tie higher up the forehead on my first prototype. It still didn't swim very well, but this might have been because it wasn't weighted correctly. I'll try again on my next gill
  15. Wups pictures didn't work. Here we go Mark, thanks for the input! I'll try raising my line tie on the next one!
  16. Thanks for helping guys! Yeah, I just want to make my bait have a good action at all speeds. I don't have any swim videos yet, but I do have a few pictures.
  17. Still having trouble when I try to burn my swimbait. It seems like the bottom of my gill is steady, but the top moves from side to side. Should I put less weight in the head or put the weight higher up? I can use all the help I can get!
  18. I did cut down on the bait's stomach quite a bit... I've heard that putting as much MBs in it as possible would also help. Is this true? I'm also wondering about the epoxy still; is too much bad for the swim? Thanks for the input Mark!
  19. Hey guys I was wondering if you could help me out. I made a gill, and when I test swam it, the swim was pretty good, although it did wobble on the burn. Anyone know how to fix this? The amounts were 6 drams of resin, 6 drams of hardener, and 6 drams of MBs. I added weight at the bottom of the first half of the bait. I was also wondering if too much epoxy is a factor. Does too much of it make the bait wobble like it did? I really have no idea, and any thoughts would be amazing! Thanks!
  20. Prototype gill! #lilpiggyswimbaits
  21. Wow I've never thought about that! On my bluegill, the gills aren't flared too much... I don't think they should be a problem. However, some of my other baits do have more prominent gills. I'll look in to this. Thanks Dale!
  22. Took it out for a swim yesterday and it stays down really well! That low forehead really helps. I think that gill might be my new favorite now
  23. Here it is! I tried it out in my tiny pond in the backyard and it seemed like it swam pretty well... I couldn't really tell though since the pond isn't very long. This was the only pic I could upload because the other pictures were over 2MB
  24. I just made my new gill swimbait with a low forehead. I haven't tested it yet, but hopefully the different shape will keep the bait down... I'll post pics soon.
  25. So to keep the bait down, should I use more microballoons and more lead or less microballoons and less lead?
