  1. All are very good replies. I appreciate the different opinions. I do have different molds. My favorite silicone jigs to tie are life like silicone swim jigs. I imagine I could use most of those to tie bucktail jigs. I just didn’t know if anyone here had tried different molds for that application. It doesn’t have to have a keeper for a grub. I can hand tie one on. I am pretty good at coming up with patterns and colors for silicone swim jigs. I will just have to play with the bucktail and see how the jigs react in the water makes self. I have watched most of Smalljaw’s videos over the years. Dan is one of the people that kind got me into wanting to tie all my own jigs and my own patterns. Thanks again everyone.

  3. Why did they stop making that mold? Can you still find them? Is there a mold somewhat like that available now?
  4. Do you have a recommended mold or type?
  5. LOL! I already watch his videos. I’ve watched them for years. I was just wanting some opinions and or advise from a group of people to see what their thoughts and opinions on the subject was.
  6. That looks really nice! I usually hand tie silicone or rubber. I’m thinking about trying buck tail. I am trying to figure out if it matters what kind of Jig mold I use for tying buccktail as far as how it falls in the water and the balance and flow of the jig.
  7. I know this isn’t the fly tying section. However, my idea was to make some bucktails for bass and walleye using my lead molds I have for bass fishing. I figured some of you may had tried this at some point. Any good or bad reviews on the idea. Or suggestions? I hand tie my jigs. I just haven’t tried bucktail yet.
  8. Thank you. I do have the smaller poison tail jig mold. I’ll have to look at it
  9. I’m looking for a mold that can do several things. I want a balance jig head that is good for casting a bucktail. I would like it to be universal so if I don’t want to use bucktail I can put a curltail grub on it. I’d like it to have an eye socket on it for eyes. I’d like to be able to use different size hooks in the mold. Ranging from walleye hooks to bass size hooks. I have many molds. I’ve been looking at a couple that fit this description. Please give your info and opinions.
  10. Anyone use the newer do it molds walleye jig mold? Also anyone tie buck tail jigs with it? How does it act casting it out and the retrieve? Is it pretty balanced on the retrieve?
  11. Yes. I’ve also considered using JB WELD on one side and etc on the other for some give and tight fit. Thanks for the reply.
  12. I really appreciate the advise and idea. I ordered some stuff. I’ll give it a try and let you know how it goes. I’ll have to look back at the original message. I need to make a channel for the hook and wire keeper I want to use. Thanks again
  13. I do really like this idea. I think I might try this out. Thanks
  14. Ok. For some reason that makes more sense to me. Any suggestions on what kind of clay and where to buy it?
  15. Also was hoping to see some neat modifications people have done. I’ve done the spinnerbait wire mod and a couple different mods with the dremel.
  16. Yes! That’s why I posted this! The RTV worked on one mold. But I could not get it to stay on a different mold because of the way that particular mold is made. I also tried RTV AND magnetic tape. Because some molds. If you use different hooks. The hook point move ever so slightly to the right or left. Slightly out of Alignment with the weed guard (drives me nuts). So I built it up a tad and added the magnetic tape to hold the hook in place and in line. One mold worked. One did not work as well. I’d like to keep them versatile as far as hook size but I want to build that up to add the keeper. I have been hand tying with thread the W400 wire keeper on and using the all weather gel super glue on the threads to hold everything in place. It is ok for personal use jigs. But time consuming and only fits on certain hooks.
  17. I’d love to hear other ideas as well. Always looking for different ideas to try. Most molds are different. But I tend to like the wire keeper. So I’ve been looking into trying to convert most of the molds to a wire keeper. Some of the older molds just have quite a decent step down after the skirt collar to where I think there is not enough metal there to hold the keeper in place very well while pouring. So that is why I was looking at different ideas to build it up but also have an indent for the keeper.
  18. I like the idea and am glad to hear an idea that I have not seen or heard of yet when it comes to this mod for an older mold. Totally makes sense tho. As long clay would stay in place well while pouring and storage. Ever run into cracks or breaks after awhile?
  19. Ok people. Most of my mold mods I’ve been able to do with either RED RTV gasket, a dremel, or a hammer. However, some of the older molds don’t have much extra aluminum past the skirt collar down the shank to add a nice indent to securely add a wire keeper. So, I considered building it up a little. With a JB Weld type material and putting wire keeper indent in that along the hook shank. More than likely there has been a post about this before. However, I am interested in your experienced opinions, thoughts, advise on what to use what not to use, and pictures of your mold modifications if able. Thank you.

  21. Those jigs look great. Looks like I might have to try the smaller weed guards (another rabbit hole). I’ve just mainly have used the 1/8 and 5/32 size weed guards. I’m always tinkering and testing the jigs I make to see what changes make them do different things or increase hook to land ratio. I went to order some hooks and thought to myself, I’ve avoided pouring that smaller poison tail jig because I don’t have the right hook and base hole pin. So, that is why I started this topic. I appreciate all the feedback. You guys gave me a lot of options and good information to think about and try. Thanks again.
  22. Curious with that website if you have to buy a certain amount and how shipping is. I’ll have to check it out. Thanks
  23. If it works it works! Thanks for the info
  24. Wouldn’t it be 1/16” O.D. Tubing for the 1/8oz jig weed guard pin? Or am I thinking wrong?
