crazychuy
I'm out here in California and we're infamous for our giant wooden swimbaits. How do I make my own giant wooden swimbait? What kind of wood is best for this? What are some helpful tips, links, books, videos, and/or forum threads? Thanks, CHUY
Nathan
Crazychuy, Spend some time with the search feature of this site (top tool bar)and read the hard baits forum. There isn't anything that makes a "swimbait" different than any other crankbait other than size. All the same basic principles apply..Nathan
Jason
Nathan has the right idea. Take your time and use the search option. You will find TONS of info on swimbaits.
RiverMan
There is one thing that makes a swimbait different Nathan and that's the amount of work that goes into building one! You can build three cranks in the time it takes to build a swimbait. Build the lure from poplar, it's a good all around wood and can be found virtually anywhere. BobP
Yeah, a double jointed swimbait is as much trouble to build as three regular crankbaits I use basswood but most hardwoods will do fine. I've built them from balsa but it requires a lot of work to reinforce it and through-wire all the hinges. Do a search on hinges to get several options.
