A word on the "New" Plastic

Recommended Posts

I finally got a chance to cook up my first batch of worms with Calhoun plastic. I had to mix it up really well 'cause most of the hardener had settled to the bottom. I don't think that will be a problem now that I have it on an automatic mixer. Keeping in mind that I only poured about 100 worms, I was overall pretty happy with it. I had to add about 1/2 cup of softener to the first gallon. I would say it's close to Lure Craft's 536 formula in texture. Depends on preferance, but I don't think the 536 is soft enough. I made a few worms in basic colors (just to test it), and it seemed to accept them all well. It didn't show any signs of burning on high heat, although it does have a unique smell when cooking :? It's not too bad though; nothing that a little garlic or crawfish oil can't take care of. The only thing I'm worried about is consistency, and only time will tell on that. I haven't used much of the stuff yet, but I plan on messin' with it for the next couple days. With a cheaper plastic, sometimes you can pour 300 good baits; then the next 100 will feel like sticks :| Just hope that's not the case here. Feel free to shoot any questions my way and I'll try to get 'em answered a.s.a.p. :)

It has a kinda "musty" smell while cooking, but I can't smell it in the end product, especially after adding scents. I used Lure Craft's shad scent (which is very mild) and all I could smell was the shad. If I can get these same results after a couple more gallons, then it works for me :D

I agree that the shad is verry lite smell. If you cant smell plastic with it, it should be ok. You say this is softer than 536, Is this before you add the softenter to it? I like the 536 personaly.

Is it easy to pull apart? Comparing to 536 that is. I wouldnt want to have a bait last for only 1 fish.

It's very similar to 536 before adding the softener; maybe just a hair tougher, but I added softener when I used the 536. It just depends on your preference. I like my stuff REALLY soft :)

Put it to you this way.....

with Lure Craft's 536 formula, I'd add 2 cups of softener to 5 gallons of plastic. With Calhoun, I would go to 2 1/2 or 3 cups of softener.

The worms made with Calhoun seem to hold together well. It might be worth it to you to give 'em a call and see if they can send you a sample. They sent me 5 gallons for free. I was a little shocked that they did that, but I ain't complainin'
