molding split belly baits

Recommended Posts

I have a soft plastic master that I want to mold with RTV that has a split belly like a fluke. I have never molded a bait like this. How would you guys in the know do this? I figured that after gluing the bait down, I would first try to spread open the belly a little and pour the RTV in the slot first before pouring around the exterior. I'm sure that I may have to massage the belly a little (that sounds a little wierd?) to squeeze a little of the excess out and fill in any air pockets in the slot. Does this sound like I may be on the right track? One thing I forgot to mention, I have a fluke mold from LC so I know it can be done, but this bait is fairly large and the hook slot is as much as 3/4" deep at its deepest spot in the belly. Anyone think this will be a problem? Also other molding materials like POP are not an option with this one. Thanks all.

Find some shim stock or sheet metal, sually .050-.080 thick. cut it to fit in the hook slot of the org bait with about 1" hang out. mold it

Walla you have your new mold with a bult in hook slot.

you either have to permanately attach the sheetmetal to the mold or insert it in the mold each time its poured.

Thanks for the advice guys. I was really hoping I would not have to make a hook slot though. One question. I am planning on drilling some holes in the slot material in the area that is exposed for the RTV to flow through to lock it in place. Do yall think this will be sufficient, or should I bend some sort of flange in it as well? Is there any material I can use that the RTV will bond to? I want to make sure that this mold will last. Thanks guys.
