New River Rat
In the not so distant past, I saw clear blades on some spinnerbaits. Not thinking it was a good idea at the time, I never bought any. Now I don't see them anywhere (much). Does anyone throw theses? Does anyone know a supplier? I've got a partial sheet of Plexiglas laying in the shop, and now the wheels are turning....... ........and before it's asked, nature uses camouflage as a defense mechanism. If the prey looks like the surrounding environment, then clear should work well. I used to throw clear crankbaits A LOT with very good success. bassn1
If you have some plexiglass handy, try making your own. I placed a blade on the plexiglass, traced the outline and cut out the rough shape. Place the blade (curved side up) on a cookie sheet, then place the cut out plexiglass on the blade. Make sure it's lined up even with the blade. Pop it in the oven at LOW heat and watch for the plexiglass to melt around the blade. Too much heat will put bubbles in the plexi-blade. Take it out and sand the edges and drill your hole for the clevis or split ring. 1/16" thick plexi worked better for me but 1/8" will work as well. Hope this helps. senseamila
I cant seem to find any of these clear blades. I have a couple ideas to use them. Can anyone help me locate a few?
HickoryHollow
I don't get it! I mean.....I see what you are saying about bait fish blending in, but isn't the idea of a lure to make it's self impossible for the target fish to miss? Haven't we worked for years to develop "flash"? Florescent colors, gold, silver, metal flake...etc. Maybe it is just because I usually fish muddy river water, but making the lure harder to see just doesn't appeal to me at all. Am I missing something? Tim
canuck
This is an interesting variation worth discussing and trying. In my opinion to eliminate the colour or flash from the blades really changes the presentation.Doing so may make the bait less familiar thus more interesting possibly more natural in high pressure fishing locations and in clear water applications.Using clear blades in murkie or brackish stained water would test wether or not blade flash and colour are even a facter in causing stikes or increasing the number of stikes. Changing to clear blades still provides vibration but alters the total package. The weight and desity of the new clear blade is also going to be different thus affecting the intensity of the vibration given off and the water displacement/signature will be some what new. Wether it be suttle in difference it all depends on the fish response. It would be nice to here if any one has results with this some what new inovation and application. senseamila
I want to put a minnow outline on the clear blade and fill a middle stripe of glitter w/ a white body and white/silver skirt (to get the thump but a smaller presentation of the bait fish) I might even double blade it. I was out the other day fishing and it seemed like every fish on the river were chasing these minnows about 1 to 2 inches long but we translucent and not even looking at my spinner and cranks. I have never seen a minnow that big so clear. I don't know if it will work but everything is worth trying once right? lol
toadfrog
Fish know seasonal food and target it . They tend to partially ignore other sources at times . Light weight blades clear or not may not spin as well so I'd use a folded clevis with a metal bead under it to act as a bearing . I'm not real crazy about match the hatch theories but if you use clear blades try to make the bait as close to the minnow color as you can . Fresh water fish see in spectrums of color unlike salt water fish which see somewhere close to our range of vision .
