ChadK
I realize this is going to be a VERY broad question, but here goes. I'm fixing to by a kit from Del if I can ever get in touch with them by phone or e-mail to get a couple of questions answered. My question is, are there some must have colors for starting out. Obviously this is going to greatly depend on what I'm pouring and colors I'm currently using in commercial baits. I have a stick mold and primarally throw some kind of watermellon. Watermellon seems to be a staple in my diet. Wat/Red. Wat/Candy. Wat/Pepper. I also throw some green pumpkin colors and love a chartruse tail often. Since a kit only comes with 3 (1)oz colors I realize I'm going to have to purchase a few extra bottels of color. I was thinking these smaller bottles could be the lesser used colors and I'd get a couple of larger bottels for the more frequently used clolrs. The glitter is a little easier I guess. Two 1oz containers come with the kit. I'll need some black and red for sure. Should i do the same thing with the glitter as I'm doing with the color. use these two smaller bottels for odder colors (gold?), and buy a couple of larger bottels of the black and red?? I also noticed there is a little difference in the colors offered at LC and Dels. Do you have a preference where you buy your colors from? saint308
I use colors from all 3 makers. I also use flake from LC and Bob at ozark tackle. I would not go buying a whole lot of different colors fron the get go. Start simple until you get the hang of it. That way you won't waste too much if you screw up. Once you get the hang of it, you will need the following: 65 different colors by the gallon 30 different flakes by the pound (in 3 different sizes) 200 molds (in different styles) Plastic by the 5 gallons in regular and soft Oh, yeah basically a salt mine behind your house. This crap/hobby is that addictive. If I would have found this hobby 20 years ago, I would not have had to go to rehab (just joking, I have never been to rehab). This is basically legal crack. Anyway, good luck. You will get all the help you need here. Saint.
ChadK
Thanks Saint!
saint308
I would get these three colors in my kit: light watermelon black green pumpkin Flake Red Black You can make a lot of basic watermelon/green pumpkin colors from that. Then go into the junebug/black grape and green flake. Siant.
BBC
chad, I agree with Saint. Start out with a few colors of dye and glitter (maybe get different sizes of glitter though). When I started I bought Del's stick kit and got an additional mold and bottle of dye. I use a lot of light watermelon, black, and green pumpkin dye and black, red, and gold flakes (red and gold in 0.015" and black in 0.035"). after you get the hang of it and go through a gallon or two of plastic, then start getting more dye, glitter, and molds and go at it. nickcalderone
Chad, I have 5 colors that I can make practically ANY color from. They are RED, YELLOW, BLUE, BLACK, and WHITE. These are really good starters as they are basic primary colors and can be mixed in any combination to make others. I have had no problem making watermelon or pumpkin for that matter. As Saint said, this is addictive...I have only been pouring for a week or so and I have already poured almost 100 baits...and I just placed an order for more plastic with Del today. Now my fishin' buddies are starting to swarm my workshop like flies... Nick By the way Saint, awesome website you have and great looking baits! earthworm77
In the first hand pouring book I wrote HP 101-I recommend the following colors for someone just starting out: Black, Watermelon, Green Pumpkin, Pearl(powder), Purple, Pumpkin, minnow silver and maybe Chart. Flake- Black, Red, Green, Holo silver, purple.
alsworms
This is basically legal crack. Saint. A strange way to put it, but right on the money Saint. BTW.....I'm in complete agreement with Craig (earthworm). The only 2 that I'd add would be red & some shade of blue. Again, this is depending on your budget. This hobby can really empty a bank account FAST!

ChadK
Now I've just got to get ahold of Del to place the order. I just have a few questions as to which Mold I'll go with.
earthworm77
Shame on me...California Blue and Strawberry would be welcome additions if you have the extra coin to get a few more.
james bradshaw
If you are smart you will never start making plastic lures, Because it will turn into an addiction that you will never be able to get rid of and you will spend all of your money and time making lures. And maybe make a business out of this hobby that will consume so much time and money that you will barely have time to sleep. Just stay with the basic colors and molds, work up from there! And above all just have fun with it! James

ChadK
I really hope I can speak with him or someone from there. I'm just uncertain about which mold to get with the kit. They really dont have one listed I really want.
bassman843
instead of the kit just get want you want or call lc during bussiness hours and some one will be there to answer any of your questions very helpful people there I tried to call dels today and couldn't get a hold of any body just left a message doubt they call back I have read that they are busy if you were that busy you thought they would get some extra help. ChadK
well I went ahead and ordered a kit with a few extra items on line withoug getting my questions asked so I probably setteled for a mold that would not have been my first choice. They are obviously very busy, but I absolutely agree with you. May be costing them some business. I tried for days to get someone to answer the phone. and sent at least one e-mail without response.
