Pop
I have alot of old jigs that have never been painted. Ofcourse they have turned gray (I can't think for the life of me the name for this ). I use to soak them in vinegar or wipe them down with a sanding cloth very lightly. If I didn't then the paint would not adhere very well. Now that I have been using powder paint, I have found I don't need to do any prep work. I heat my jigs with a propane torch before dipping. Do you think the propane torch burns of the (name I can't think of) gray finish or is it the powder paint that adheres that much better? Ofcourse, I guess it doesn't really matter as long as it is working, but people that don't use powder paint might find the info helpful. clamboni
Oxidation???? The heat mey remove the oxidation, but I think it's mostly just the way the powder paint works. Does the metal change color when you heat it? If it does, then it's changing chemically. I always do mine when they're still shiny, so I don't end up with that problem. Pop
Can't believe I couldn't think of oxidation. Thanks
reeves
Pop, I have been doing the same as you for quite some time with no problems. I had a large amount of spinners that didn't get sealed well and oxidized. Heating with a torch and powder painting as usual with no extra prep. Like Clamboni, I prefer to paint as soon as possible but every now and then I don't get it done. I have found though, that by keeping them in a well sealed plastic zip-lock type bag has prevented them from oxidizing. Good informative post Pop! Ogajiga
In addition to moisture seal out bagging, alloying 4+% tin into your lead will retard oxidation almost indefinitely.
