Pit Bass
Hi guys. I'm new to hobby of hand poured plastics and I have some ?'s for all of you experts ! First off, I got started with the Bass-Pro Shops $25.00 kit, that included 1 pt. MF plastic. I just used a propane stove and an aluminum pan to get started. It worked pretty good and from there, I was hooked ! My next step was finding this website, and ordering some Calhoun from Del-Mart.com. My problem now is about the Smoke and Fumes created by using my propane stove with Calhoun Plastics. Should I be using a microwave ? Another problem is pouring small, detailed areas. Seems like my plastic is too thick, unless it's nearly scorched, to flow into the detailed area's. Thanks for any help Alan G
alsworms
Softener and heat stabilizer should take care of that. You can get both from Calhoun, Lure Craft, and MF. Add about 1/2 cup of softener and 3 ounces of stabilizer per gallon of plastic. This will solve the smoking problem, as well as the thickness. Sounds like you might be close to burning the plastic in order to bring it to a runny state. You will notice a big difference with those two additives as Calhoun should hardly smoke at all. kidlizard
Hey Pit Bass, Yep, we all started that way. A little plastic and a couple colors........next thing you know, you have moved all the stuff out of the garage to make room for supplies and equipment You will no doubt get deeper and deeper into this, and you have found a great bunch of guys to help with every step. My suggestion is that you ask about everything before you do anything and that can save alot of headaches. Glad to have you here. John Oh yea, heat stabilizer makes a world of difference. Also helps keep the bright colors bright under long periods of heat.
