SWO
I'm just looking for a rough idea. Say you dip 3 1/2" tubes and maybe double dip for a fairly thick wall. About how many tubes would you be able to make with one gallon of plastic?
Delw
I'm just looking for a rough idea. Say you dip 3 1/2" tubes and maybe double dip for a fairly thick wall. About how many tubes would you be able to make with one gallon of plastic? I was told about 500-600 depending on the thickness they are. Tubeman probally has a really good idea. Tubeman
Del, your guess is accurate. Remember that you'll always have left over plastic as you wont be able to dip past the 3.5" depth......unless you are smart and time the dipping so that you do your heads right after you have reached that 3.5 " mark. This works especially well if you have lots of dippers. Or if your a little off just add a tad more plastic to get your bodies done and go from there. bojon
Horizontal dip down to the last 1/2 once. Why end up with 3 1/2 inch of plastic you cant dip in.Three and a half inches will get you a bunch more tubes. What a waste. rr316
pretty hard to do two color tails and heads with horizontal dipping, its not wasted just put more in or save it for next time!
bojon
What problems do you have?Maybe I can help you through them.Of course you can save the plastic for next time, but why not use all you have down to practically no waste,or put asides.I always thought two tone and different colored tails were easy.Never could I understand using so much plastic to dip tubes.Depending on the pan size you can dip three or four at a time till you get down to the last ounce, then switch to the single rod.You should be left with such a small amount of plastic, less than a tube dip, that you can trash it and not feel guilty.Just my humble opinion. Tubeman
One thing I missed on that last post, the reason why we vertical dip is we do it in volume... 24 rods on a dipper (11 dippers in a run) We buy our plastic in 55 gallon drums and use/reuse a lot of plastic. You cannot run 266 tubes in 30 minutes any other way. Also we start with our larger 9" tubes and work down to a 3" tube. Dipping horizontally is great for small runs and does conserve plastic. Sometimes I forget the way we do things is not for everyone.
Vodkaman
Surely, the small amount left over is used in the next mix, or is that not the done thing. I know the plastic changes with constant re-heating. If you weigh one bait and weigh a gallon. Divide the gallon weight by the single weight and knock 10 - 15% off for wastage, this should put you in the ball park.
bojon
Sorry, there is no way that the volume you do could be done by my way without a bunch of modification. That is high volume.I forget I'm geared up to the guy who wants a couple of dozen for the next days fishing trip, and if it works, then make a couple of hundred. Horizontal is still better for three color dips, like green body, brown back, and white belly.ECT. SORRY
shadrap1769
Is there a thread on here for doing multiple color tubes? I just ordered some stuff to do tubes and have done some reading on here but wasn't sure how to go about doing this. thanks.
