plastic odor

Recommended Posts

I was looking to buy some 5 gallon buckets and was wondering I any one could give any insite, on the differences of Lurecraft 502 and MF regular. MF states that there plastic is made from non toxic chemicals and has low odor. Lurecraft, has a minimal odor but doesnt say any thing about the chemicals it uses. Thanks and merry christmas to all the TU members, for great year Anthony Trenshaw Painter Lake Tackle.com

I have used lurecraft 502 and the smell is stronger imo than reg M-F. I switched to mf not so much because of the smell but for other reasons. Lurecraft is good stuff, but not my personal choice. I don't use a resperator, but do have decent ventalation and have no problems health wise, but I do avoid breathing it in as much as possible. I do really like M-F but to each his own!

I am by no means one of the safety patrol but I would avoid "smelling" any of them. I work everyday around solvents and am amazed with the high rate of respiratory problems, skin disorders, headaches, and various other problems that my "educated" coworkers live with. Long term exposure can casue additional issues. Cancers associated with mouth, throat, nasal passages, lungs, emphasemia, asthma, etc.... all seem to be a negative in my view point. I don't pour unless I am vented. To look for a less smelly plastic is not reducing exposure. Set up some sort of ventilation even if it is a box fan in the window with the heating source in front of it. Typically by product of heating are carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, the catch all phrase various hydrocarbons, and hydrogen choride. Add in colorants, stabilizers, softners, hardners, glitters, scents, salt, etc.. plus heating what additional reactions may be generating products that one shouldn't want to inhale. If I recall reading on this site or may have been yahoo chat with some of the guys several have experienced headaches, nose bleeds, sore throats, rashes, dermititis, and other ailments (I don't rember who but someone told me they had blurred vision after long pouring sessions).

I would agree with everything that Travis has said and would add that I do in fact have asthma and I am on assorted breathers. Although I had decent ventilation in my first years of pouring there was still vapor in the air and I did experience headaches etc. So in the last couple of years I invested in an ambient air compressor which draws air from outside and runs thru 50 foot of hose to a full face mask. The mask doesn't come off till I walk out of the building. The main ingrediant in these plastics is poly vinyl chloride, the same stuff used to make PVC pipe. I contacted MF, my supplier, about the vapor etc. and they told me their employees wallow around in the stuff all day with no effects. But, cook the stuff and you have another animal all together. I'm not crying here, I'm just making everyone aware of the possible long term effects if the right precautions arn't taken. And, yes I'm still going to pour.
