Hey guys,

We'll be driving in Friday, Apr 25 and I'm not sure exactly when we'll be getting in, we need to stop in Sedalia, MO to get checked into the Hotel... It seems there is no place in Clinton that will take 2 cocker spaniels and my wife will not travel without them. Anyways, just wanted to answer the "Where's Bruce" question in advance.

What kind of fish are likely to be in the ponds you were talking about Coley? Bass, crappie, blue gills and the like? Are these ponds on private property of do I need to pull a few Mo daily fishing permits? Any other information would be helpful.

To the guys coming in from across the puddle, do any of you need to barrow an extra spinning rod? The only bait casters I have are musky rods and those are staying home this trip.

Can you believe it? Just a little over 2 weeks until the 2008 TU Meet!!!!!!

I'll be comming over minimalist, but will bring a rod, reel and calculator. I even have to buy some clothes when I get there as it is all shorts and sandals here. Dan's offered to help me out with any equipment and is going to give me some personal instruction in the art, as I arrive a week before the meet.

Bruce,

The ponds are on private property so we don't buy a fishing permit. The ponds have a nice stock of largemouth bass and some 2-pound crappie in them along with some assorted sunfish.

Vodkaman and the others that are flying in,

I understand that you will be travelling light. Please let the rest of us know what you need in the way of tackle, boots, jackets, etc. and we will make sure that you have what you need. However, you're on your own when it comes to the women and booze. Oh, BTW, Clinton is in a dry county! No, just kidding. And, since Coley has decided to show up, Zoe is off limits, too.

I'm hoping that Zoe plays nice with cocker spaniels, otherwise I'll park under a shade tree. Any idea if Clinton has been seeing the all the rain that the east side of MO has been getting the last few weeks; I'm debating boots or hip-boots. I'll try to remember extra lawn chairs and other creature comforts; are there any special needs, glucose tablets, sun block, etc.? Remember, the only dumb question is the one you don't ask!!!

V/Man and Phil - Just a warning, don't try and board with a loaded reel, because they will take it off you at the security point - this happened to a mate of mine recently, and it was an internal flight.

As for me and fishing gear, for the same reasons, I will not bring any, too much hassle with the security and opening everything before every flight (three flights in and out) - it's bad enough with the clothing.

I will buy something when I get there, besides I can just watch the action, which can be as much fun - yes Bruce I'm a voyeur. pete

Hi Gene

Like Pete I dont think I will risk bringing fishing tackle as security nowadays is real tight and I would hate to lose prized reels ect so its either a trip to the tackle shop or beg n borrow from you generous fellas, I'll need a pair of size 10 boots but will have all other clothing. I'm really getting a buzz now the trip is approaching and cant wait to meet everyone.

Phil, Pete, Vodkaman,

Let us know your preference for fishing tackle, i.e. casting, spinning, spincast, etc. and what lb. test line you want. We will try to make sure that you have something to fish with. Besides, fishin' ain't no spectator sport.

Phil,

How about some size 11 boots with the toes stuffed?

I've never used a bait caster (multiplier) reel, all the 'birds nest' talk has put me off. I use a fixed spool bail arm type reel. I will need to put some new line on as I cannot trust the line I have now, as it was dipped in brine when I was in Sweden. The rod I have is fairly light, I think the full blooded casting limit is about 15gm (1/2 oz). The baits that I am making weigh 21gm, so I just need to take it easy, forget about the world distance record. It is not an expensive job, if it breaks it will be a geed excuse to invest in a propper jobby.

I am looking forward to visiting a real fishing tackle shop, I have not found one here local yet. For example, I wanted a hundred trebles. The main tackle shop did not stock them, the next shop (aquarium!) had about six different sizes, ALL in one box. Fortunately, I had fifteen minutes to kill, waiting for my pizza.

Clothing - mainly jumpers and a jacket, maybe a pair of size 10 wellies, for the mud. Remember, what feels like a nice day to you, will probably feel like the depths of winter to me. My tickets are paid for and I arrive on the 19th.

Phil and Dave,

As near I can figure, a UK size 10 is about a US size 10 1/2. A US size 11 and a pair of heavy socks and it should be pretty close.

Pete,

I only wear a US size 8 1/2 or 9 about a Australian size 8 or 8 1/2 respectively. Does that help any?

Dave,

Just to make sure we're talking about the same type reel, something like this?

Bruce - our shoe/boot sizes are the same as yours . What sort of boots are we talking about??? What type of fish are there around Clinton (how big) and above all what do you all reccomend- I'm flying blind here!!

If we only need light tackle , I could bring some of my cheapo ebay 'eggbeaters', would not matter if I lost them, what line weight is recomended. Sorry to be a pain in the A. pete

I have several reels I can bring a few Mitchell 300's and a few Ambassadeur 5000's, possibly a few rods. It is older equipment but will work fine. Largemouth bass will be the main objective with the occasional crappie for the plate. Most of the fish caught at the last outing were of 1-2 lb. range.

Pete.

By boots, I'm going with hiking boots. I can normally figure to stay out of the water. I think Coley and Gene are talking about mid-calf rubber boots, but my feet have got to breath.

Types of fish: Large Mouth Bass normally 6 pounds or less, Crappie (white or black) 2 pounds or less, blue gill a pound or less, maybe some catfish in a pond maybe 3 pounds or less. Query System

Tackle: The bass can be kind of fickle, crankbaits, spinners, in-line spinners, jigs, soft plastics, minnow, hook and float on 15 pound test or less. Crappie on small spinners, jigs, grubs, jigs, soft plastics, live worms and minnows on floats on 8 pound mono. Bluegill on small plastics and live worms and meal worms on 4 pound test mono.

Besides, I'm just planning to watch and throw rocks at the water and see if I can splash any one.... Gees, I was only joking.

Hi Fellas

Looks like the fish are going to be kind of 6lb max. I have a gorgeous telescopic spin rod which closes down to around 14" so I'll bring that along as it will tuck away in the corner of the case with a cheapo fixed spool reel and line so if I cant get the reel through it wont matter. Gene those will be purrrrfect :).

I fish all types of outfit here in the UK from ultra light lures on 6lb line with fixed spool reels to heavy jerkbaits with 80lb braid and Ambassadeur 6500c multiplier (my favorite) and Quantum Iron reel. I've never even seen a Bass, Crappie or sunfish so that will be cool. Pete and I have a days Muskie fishing booked with a local guide on the Tuesday but I am not holding my breath for Muskie but if it does happen that would be a trophy shot to savour and would take front page in the album.

Thanks for all that boys, I'll bring 2 light reels, and if some one can fit me out with a rod, I would be greatfull. Boots, I have some hiking type boots and I will bring my own 'night crawlers' !!!!

Tin things, I don't know much about, you will have to enlighten me when I'm there Bruce.

Thanks all. pete

Guys,

I'll bring some extra rods and reels with me for anyone that needs one. I'm sure that between all of us no one will have to "spectate". So, save your space/weight in your baggage for other things.

As far as the boots go, the main concern will be getting your feet wet from walking in the mud around the pond. The banks are pretty clear but may be muddy in some places. I have attached an arial photo of the pond.
