spinner bait wire

Recommended Posts

If you're just starting out I'd go with pre-bent forms, after you get comfortable you may want to bend your own or you may want to continue to use the ready made forms. The wire diameter you want to use should be on the mold. Pre- bent forms are quick and easy because they are already bent but bending your own allows you to make your own angles plus you'll get more for the money but it'll take up more time.

I bend my own forms......it really doesn't take much more time as far as I'm concerned. I have a little blue bender and if 5 extra seconds is too much time then buy prebent forms. I use a lee bottom pour pot and the prebent forms get in the way while pouring for me. The do it ultra spinner mold says .040 wire for 3/8 oz. The guys I sell baits to say .040 is way too heaavy, and I've been using .034 and they're happy. I like the lighter wire myself, too. I just modified the mold so the wire would fit tight with a pointed punch. For 1/2 oz baits I'll use a little thicker wire, .038. But if people want a lighter wire I'll use the .034.

thanks for the info I heard some guys making spinnerbaits complain about the wire in if you use to thin of wire you get alot of break offs and to thick you don't get enough vibration

You are mostly correct? Thinner wire is not as durable and bending it straight after catching fish is what breaks it. I have never had one break on a fish they always break when I try to bend them back into shape. Most of the time I use .032 for maximum vibration but I do use the .035 on 1oz baits. That little blue bender is nice when you do want to make a custom frame. I used it to make a larger frame for a 6 bladed bait.

I build mine mostly for Musky and use .051 or .062 SS wire.

I'm planning to use 0.62 on 1 1/2 & 2oz on a Muskie /Pike spinnerbaits. May I ask you couple questions?

1. Do you use Do-It or custom molds?

2. What brand of 0.62 wires do you recommend for heavy spinnerbaits? I found Mason 0.51, which I used before and like it, from Barlow, but they don't have 0.62.

Thank you, in advance.

I own a Hagens wire bender, and my brother has an earlier version of the "Boggs" bender......we both prefer the ready made spinnerbait wires!!!

It's faster, cheaper, & better than what we can bend from coiled wire!

Glaucus,

Thank you, very much for such great reply. It's fantastic information. Originally, I thought about Do-It SJ-3H-X model upgrade to accept 0.62, but now, I think, I've better go with one from Luremaking and their 0.62 ready forms.

I also have Hagen's and Boggs wire benders. I like them both. Boggs for lighter stuff and Hagen
