mark poulson
I have bought some already twisted sst. wire for eye ties and hook hangers, but the heaviest gauge I could get is .41. Does anyone know where I can get some heavier gauge, not spring tempered sst wire so I can twist my own?
Lure--Prof
Ace is the place for 19 gauge stainless. McMaster-Carr has about anything you need in stainless wire in 1/4 pound quantities and up at a real decent price. I do believe that www.mcmastercarr.com is what you need. Spike-A-Pike
Stamina sells it up to .051 and Moore's Lures has .050, .063, and .
Lure--Prof
Bruce, he's after the NON-tempered wire, all of Stamina's S.S wire is tempered, as used in spinnerbait building, and I suspect that Moore's is also. Dean
Spike-A-Pike
Ooooops - I can bend it my Boggs and it never springs back. I wouldn't using bailing wire.
HAWGHUNNA
Would the same type twisted stainless steel hook hanger/line tie wire work in foam baits,or is through wire the best/only method?
mark poulson
I guess that would depend on how dense/strong the foam is. I've never made a foam lure, so I really can't comment specifically. If I were you, and made foam lures, I'd make a test piece and see how strongly a twist wire would hold in it. I would also experiment to see if I could melt a heated wire into the foam instead of epoxy (thank JR) to see if that would work.
gldnbear93
I get .051 and .062 in 3 foot lengths at a welding supply house. 308L or 316L. The 308 is a little easier to bend.
Vodkaman
For foam baits it is counter productive to do anything but through wire. It's quicker, easier, stronger, repeatable, cuts down on operations like drilling. Once the correct ballast and its location have been established, the hanger can be formed to a shape were the ballast can be cast onto the hanger. This reduces the operations even further. HAWGHUNNA
Thanks Vodkaman, Your points are well taken,I was just lookin' for more room to insert rattles into a lipless model that I'm working on,with the wire throughout the plug for 2 hook hangers and the line tie...once the ballast is in place,I'm out of rattle room.
