Goby's

Ok guys what are these things? I have seen pictures of them but I don't get it. How is it supposed to be rigged and fished? What makes it such a great bait?

Gobys are an invasive baitfish found in the Great Lakes, especially Lake Erie. Smallmouth Bass love them. A study showed that Gobys have become the major portion of a SMB diet. A popular method in Erie is the dropshot rig.

I use the Gulp gobies for smallies on Lake St. Clair. They work great for me. I rig them on a dropshot rig 8" to 12" from the weight. I hook them through the nose with an octopus hook (can't remember what size, #2 I think). I cast to small rock piles & once the weight hits the bottom I will just shake the goby in place.

I have rigged them on a jig head, nose hooked them on a drop shot or texas rigged them on a carolina rig.

Thanks for the info guys. Are these primarily smallie lures or do the lmb like them too?

Laydog, I don't see why LMBass wouldn't eat them. I know the walleye in Erie eat them. I don't know of gobies to be out side of the great lake water ways.

Gobies are now in Lake Champlain too from what I hear. Largemouth will definetly munch them also. I have caught Largemouth in the bays of Lake Erie fairly well on Goby baits. I think almost every gamefish would probably eat them.

Largies love them also. I use a goby bait everywhere I go for dropshotting along with my dropshot worms. Great Lakes, Mississippi River. Lake Shelbyville. They work anywhere. But they are suppose to mimic mainly the thousands and thousands of gobies in the great lakes.
