rfdong
Hi, I'm posting this here and on fly tying. Wanted to know what are the differences in body vs tail hair (deer or others) and what are the differences in types of hair? rabbit vs bear vs deer vs fox etc. I'm just getting into trying but want to cut down on some of the experimentation and cost of buying 50 different samples etc. I tied some with deer tail but they don't have a ton of action, and I'm not sure if that's what the whole deal is with hair jigs (not much action for cold weather) or if I got the wrong material? mikel7@mac.com
I Have Used Bear Hair And Like The Way It Works In The Water, It Seems To Have A Nice Fluff. But At A $1 Per Inch It Is A Little Pricey. I Have Gotten A Few Things From Gander Mt That Wasn't To Bad But The Imitation Hair Works Pretty Good And Has More Colors To Chose From. I Think A Lot Of This Has To Do With Personal Preference. Have Fun
flippinfool
I use deer hair. The tip of the tail is the only part worth using. It's very fine and is not hollow. Hair jigs aren't supposed to have alot of action.
psilvers
With deer hair - the body hair is hollow but bucktail is not. Body hair is used for tying hair bugs. Hmmm, hair jigs are NOT supposed to have a lot of action? Because of their design a lot of hair jigs don't have a lot of action. That doesn't mean they are NOT supposed to have a lot of action - if you can tie them so that they have action - more power to you! LedHed
If you are looking for action try marabou (fluffs). It breathes in water. You can also try human hair.
psilvers
Hey Ledhed, I don't know about you, but I need all of my hair! Another suggestion - try feathers (other than marabou). For a hair that is softer - try calf tail. Pete
LedHed
Pete LOL - It's falling out faster than I can cut it now. Still have a pony tail from years back. I like the calf tail also and rabbit fur.
psilvers
Ledhed, We are just getting smarter. Our brains are getting bigger and pushing our hair out by the roots. Calf tail is good. My wife gets upset when I start eyeing the cat! Pete
fishologist
krafthair is a awesome alternative to natural, it reminds me of troll doll hair. Comes in basic colors; black, brown, yellow, red, and moss green. Flumes open doesn't dry together and is rather cheap. .....is bald really beautiful? charkins
I use some artificial deer hair that I got from Barlow's. I really like to use marabou plumes (turkey feathers, no kidding). They have a breathing movement in the water.
