BIG soft plastics?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone could help me out here. I am looking to build some huge soft plastic baits for muskies similar to a bulldawg but have only found one site that sells big molds like that. Does anyone know of any sites that sell BIG molds for musky soft plastics? heres an example of what i am looking to make. Im just looking for something big with a curley or paddle tail.

lure craft used to have a mold like that and the tail was poured in a separate mold then fused to the body. if not Make it out of POP Plaster stuff. Alum molds in that bait are costly 300 and up depending on the size I have them up to 18" in the bulldog style.

Those bulldog style molds have become popular over the last 6 months.

If you look closely the tail of the Buldog goes up not out wards, I tried to make a buldog type mold in POP but had to do like Lure Craft and cut off the tail and make a seperate mold for it, which was fused togeterh after pouring. I am kind of working on making (well I started but have left the project a little dormant!) a one piece pop mold, when (or if!) I get around to it and am successful, I will post a pic!

Lure craft does have a couple of other BIG lure molds, a smimbait and a big curly tail I think.

your right, it does curl in towards the top fin however

if you take a 3-5" dia circle and put it right on top of the bait between the back fin and the back of the body.

Then you cut the tail with a razor or sissors from the front not the back. thats what gives the tail the action.

so if the bait is 8" long for example it has a 5-6 body with a tail that is 3-4" taller than the body give or take.

the dim of the mold are 7-8 long 5 inches tall and 1.5 inchs thick thats just for one half, making it with the tail separate the mold would only be about 2-2.5 inchs tall. then you would fuse the tail on the same way you do skirts on grubs(hot plastic).

so how would one go about pouring the POP to make this in one mold. Would you pour POP into a container and then place the lure inside of that (having the lure be on its side)? I bought some POP and made some molds, but I switched to making something like a suzy sucker because for that I just put the lue in the bottom of the container and poured POP over it. Then when it was dry i simply took the lure out and had an upside down mold. This wouldnt work for the bulldawgs though because the tail would flop over to the side. Also, for making it a two peice mold would one just make the mold and cut it in half horizontally? I also just ordered some plastics so Ill post some pictures of baits when I make them. One more question - do those who make these baits use external rigging or internal rigging? I was looking to do internal rigging and i just took some .051" wire and bent that up along with melting an egg sinker at the head. Do you think this would work?
