Orion
Here are some pictures of the fire tiger jig I just finished tying. The pictures don't really give it justice. It has 4 different colors of marabou; black on bottom, "insect" green above black, chartreuse above the green , and then orange. It's tied with red thread to match the hook and add just a little more red into the jig. Let me know what you think. If you see any things that I could have done better, please tell me. http://s254.photobucket.com/albums/hh89/crimson_death216/?action=view¤t=FireTigerJig2.jpg You can see some of the details in this picture but not the colors as well... http://s254.photobucket.com/albums/hh89/crimson_death216/?action=view¤t=FireTigerJig1-1.jpg This one is a little blurry but you cant see colors... Spike-A-Pike
Looks good to me. Are you going after trout or heading down to Elephant Butte? Do they still have the nice striped bass down that way? They were a favorite in the early 80's. I know the smallies in Wisconsin would go for those, the crappie, perch, and bluegill too. I was stationed in New Mexico for 7 yrs and always tried to make it back to Wisconsin twice a year, about 28 hours straight driving at 55 mph - I can't drive 55. Good luck and let's see some fish soon.
Orion
They do still have stripers at The Butte. I'm just going to use it when I get a chance. Once the weather warms up my dad and I are going out to Butte, Bluewater, Conchas, and Cochati. When I go up to college I'll have a bunch of lakes around my in Fort Collins so I'll use my jigs there too. Why were you driving 55mph?? why not 85?? Every year my family goes to Minnesota during the summer for a family reunion because almost all of my mom's side is in MN. We drive every other year... 23 hours is pretty bad... yankee jigger
Nice Job. Ive done some bigger jigs in a fire tiger pattern and used a fine tipped Sharpie for a little stripping.
Orion
That was the first jig that I've tried tying with more then 2 marabou colors. I might try that some time. Thanks.
Ogajiga
Could I ask how heavy a head and brand and size of hook? What kind of paint and method of application?
Orion
The head is 1/4 ounce. I didn't make it or paint it. I had it lying around and thought I'd tie something onto it. The hook size I'm unsure of I'll find out and post it up here. Edit: I just remembered what type of jig it is. It's a 1/4 oz northland "gum-ball" in fire tiger. I cut off the collar. Ogajiga
Say, if your name is Orion you beat my grandson in Greeley to it by a few years. Just my opinion, a few strands of flash filament would improve the jig. The weight and colors should be ideal for going deep up at Horsetooth for walleyes and smallies, and maybe a big ol' trout. Orion
Yeah, I thought about adding some flash. I'll add some on the next one. Horsetooth Res? In Fort Collins?
Ogajiga
Yup, my favorite spot around FC. Ask the locals where you can park for free and walk down to the coves by the dams on the East side. Another spot I like is Douglas Reservoir up north a bit in Wellington for wipers. Orion
Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for, for next year.
jflures
Horsetooth is a great place, but its still frozen (no ice fishing). It may thaw by the end of next week. throw those jigs around the inlet. Big rainbows and walleyes should start showing up there. By the way nice jigs:)
Orion
Thanks. I wont be in Fort Collins until this summer when I head up for college. Where exactly is the inlet?
jflures
the inlet (also known as inlet bay) is on the south west side. This summer try those jigs tipped with a piece of crawler, walleyes and smallmouth will take it. They can be caught all over the lake in summer. This is a real fun lake. Orion
Thanks. I'll try it when I go up to move in. Can you do it from shore or should you go out onto the lake? or both?
jflures
both, the lake is kind of hard to access from shore, but it can be done. Make sure you have a lot of crawlers, because if you get into them there will be a bunch of them. Lots of perch too. Slip bobbers are also a good bet. Ogajiga
Shore fishing Horsetooth does require some hoofing, but its worth it. You gotta pay to play except for a few unofficial park & walk in spots which may be cracked down on this year. Larimer County daily vehicle pass $7 and annual $65 resident and $85 non-resident. Also, the northwest corner shore is Lory State Park with a separate fee schedule last year $5 day for vehicles AND walk ins. I parked outside the Lory SP boundary last year and got a hefty ticket on my car for walking in. CO state or county park rangers cut no slack for out-of-state visitor ignorance. Orion
I'll be fishing there a lot since I'll be in the dorms like 5-10 minutes away. So shore fishing the inlet will produce fish. At some point if I don't bring up the aluminum boat, I'll probably try to find a fishing kayak that I can use. jflures
They want your money. Entry fees are their only source of income, no federal or state help. They do keep the place clean so the entry fee is well worth it. Dont forget about Carter lake just west of Loveland great walleye and largemouth fishing. Orion
Sounds good. What's the best place for 'gills near Fort Collins?
jflures
horsetooth, there are a bunch of them in there. You never know what you going to get at the tooth. There are also crappie, but they are hard to find at times. Also lonetree res. just southwest of Loveland
