NASCAR or F1 Racing?

Recommended Posts

After a long winter of no racing, which has more appeal; NASCAR or F1 racing?

The Daytona 500 is set for this weekend and the Australian Grand Prix is still 28 days away.

Over the brief span of time since the loss of Winston as the main sponsor, some great short tracks have been dropped from "what-ever they call it today" Cup racing schedule, short tracks like North Wilksburgho, gone forever. Now with all the open wheel drivers invading NASCAR, it is a matter of time before the sport of moonshiners is completely lost from it's roots. Over all fan support dropped in 2006 and 2007... now NASCAR says it will allow drivers to "settle matters on their own", a statement that is left undefined, how soon until drivers and owners start getting fined for not wanting to be on TV 24/7?

F-1 is gaining attention in America because there is no properly funded open wheel racing left in the US. Since F-1 is driven on road courses similar to any highway in the world, most people of the world can better relate to the skill level required to drive a road course at speed. The rules are tough, but seem to be fairer as far as rewarding individual initiative and creative design. The cars can be tuned to individual tracks and just about any country in the world can host an event. The F-1 scoring is still a little strange to me, but NASCAR scoring requires a main frame with 64 tera-gig of memory to figure out.

So, what do you think???

I have to say that I don't know much about the different formulae of US racing, but I do enjoy racing of any sort, particularly F1.

I was hoping that Schumacher was going to follow the money and go the Nigel Mansel route. But I don't think that he could cope with being told, "Mike, you have to let them passed, your not allowed to block them"!

F1 all the way.......There's just something about turning right.

It's much more of a finesse type of racing. You can't muscle your way into a spot like in NASCAR or you're gonna be airborne when wheels touch. V8 coming by at 190 MPH.....Or a turbocharged V6 revving 16000 RPM coming by at 230? I'll take 230. So much more downforce means faster turns, higher average speeds. Nascar is only exciting when they wreck, the actual racing is great in F1. And when they DO wreck, it's usually a much better wreck, too. Plus, they're not afraid to get their cars wet.

I also like the grand prix format of races. Go into a city, put up some barricades and race. Crappy roads and all. NASCAR has their couple road type races a year and it's still boring. Take an F1 car onto the same courses and it's much faster, more dramatic when tow cars are fighting for a place heading into a turn. They can't just nudge their way in or they're both out of the race.

There was talk a couple years ago of bringing a grand prix to Philly. I was so pumped for it but it never went through.

Well, truth be known, I am a major NASCAR fan. It still seems impossible to beleive that it has already been 7 years since Dale Earnhardt fatal crash. I think his lose is still being felt in the guts of the sport. I cannot beleive that Earnhardt would have let NASCAR get by with some of the crazy lame rules in the current format.

The raw speed in F1 is a amazing. It's a great venue that is seen around the world. Every few years, F1 under goes a major change to the car configuration, turbo vs normally aspirated, gound effects, paddle shifters. There are some very cool aspect of F1.

But when the driver introductions are complete and the order, "Drivers, start your engines!" is given, the big screen will be tuned into the 88 car's in car channle. But, I wish they'd bring back a few of the old short tracks back and let 'em knock the fenders off, as long as they can make the minimum speed. Fenders, fenders, we don't need no stinkin' fenders.

Enjoy race day.

Brian.

I'm too old to argue, I debate or discuss... Besides, the matter isn't even up for debate. NASCAR won't let them over 192 mph thanks to the restrictor plate engines and the current car shape. The last time NASCAR let drivers have a car that could turn a true 200 mph was back in the 1980's, thoughs were the days. And the cars didn't all come out of cookie cutter, but I digress.

If your looking for speed, you might try NHRA... Top Fuel runs 330 mhp quarter miles.

Granted I haven't followed NASCAR since I was a kid, but I recall them being able to top out at around 240 or so.

The NASCAR cars were doing about 205 if I remember correctly. The limiting factor is not the tracks, but the restrictor plates and the aerodynamics of the cars.

I was wrong with what I posted before. F1 cars are 2.4 liter V8's, naturally aspirated.
