Spinnerbait pouring

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

New to the boards with a quick question. I just got the molds for the Ultra Minnow and Bullet spinnerbaits. Poured my first few this morning. They came out good but my question is: Is it possible to pour them more than 1 at a time, like with the jig molds? I ended up having to do it one at a time because I couldn't keep the forms and hooks in place with multiple forms in the mold.

Thanks.

Are you trying to say, that you would like to pour, lets say all three cavities of the ultra-minnow spinnerbait mold at one time, but your wire forms slip down with your hook? This is possible. I use special heat tape to hold my wire foms in place, while I pour the lead. There are other ways I'm sure. If you do a search, I'm sure you'll find it, or someone here will chime in.

It's doable, but a pain. Get a block of wood that's the same thickness as one side fo the mold. Lay the wire forms on the block of wood to keep them from moving until you close the mold on them. Do you ladle pour or do you have a bottom pour pot? I use a bottom pour pot and use straight wire and bend them myself. Tried prebent forms and it was tough to get a good pour without the forms moving. Using the ultra spinner mold I get a lot more consistant oours one at a time. It took me more time to set up for each pour when trying to use more than one cavity, and I can pour plenty of baits in a short enough time.

Also, if you're using a bottom pour pot and getting a lot of imcomplete pours, I drilled the spout SLIGHTLY larger to flow more lead and it drastically improved my problem. By slightly, I'm talking about 1/64", if that doesn't work, then go another 1/64".

But to really answer your question, IMO, it's less of a hassle to pour one cavity at a time and your production won't really suffer unless you're pouring a really large amount of lures.

How do you keep the wire from hitting the bottom of the pot when pouring?

I gave up on using a bottom pour pot for this. I use to turn the wire, and it was a pain. I bought a hot pot. I'll tell you what it was the best investment I made for pouring spinnerbaits. It's easy, no more fighting wires and bending them. Trust me, get a hot pot, you will never go back to using a bootom pour pot for spinnerbaits

Cadman you and that stinken het tape I need some!

Doesn't it s**k when something bothers you that you just have to have it. :P:pDon't blame me that you want perfection, are addicted to this as much I am, and would spend your kids college money to pursue this madness. Don't feel bad, I'm in the same boat. I thought I would make a lot of money at this, LOL but all the money I make, I spend on buying more jig equipment. What a vicious circle. Take Care.......PM Sent
