mikel7@mac.com
Don't forget to take your jigs out of the vice when you are finished tying. I jerked a #4 mustad into my forearm yesterday, buried it to the bend.

That sounds...
Spike-A-Pike
I have an uncle that is only a few years older than my that I used to fish a good portion of the summer away with. Day in, day out, just 2 guys in a boat. At a family get together for July 4th, a cousin joined us on the boat and during a critical point during my uncle's cast, my cousin jumped up in the boat in the path of my uncle's 1.5 oz. red eye pike spoon. He tried to redirect his bait in mid-cast, without success. I was in the new path of the cast and got hit in the face with the rod tip and ended up with 2 of the 3 hooks of the treble hook in my nose cartilage. We tried to get it out but the pain was to great, so we're off to the emergency room. After the ER staff assessed the situation and about 30 minutes of really bad hook and nose jokes, the numbing agent was working enough to get it out. My uncle and I have joked about that event for the past 30 years... About two years ago, I was fishing with the same uncle and his 19 year old daughter. Lightning struck close to twice... My cousin got a crank bait hung up in a branch over the water. She managed to pull it out and it lodged behind my right ear. This time, we where able to remove ourselves - my uncle and I laughing our butts off and her sitting there almost in tears feeling badly about it. I just couldn't stop thinking, like father, like daughter. YES, I plan to fish with both of them later this summer. Does anyone know of a stylish hook helmet??? Orion
Haha, ouch. My cousin got a hook in the finger last summer. He ALMOST got it out but he had to go to the E-Room. Which he didn't want to do...... Here the story, it's gonna be a long one..... 2 summers ago at my usual family reunion we were having the usual night fish fry after a day on Lake Vermillion, MN. My cousin, Ben, got a fish bone stuck in his throat. Some where deep behind his tonsil or something like that. Anyways, he tried to get it out that night but couldn't reach it sooooo, he had to go to the local e-room. Bad, bad choice. The main doctor was like this 85 year old woman. Who was practically blind. She said she could see the bone, then numbed his throat and and got ready to get it out only to find that... it was... gone. She couldn't see it. She sent him out with a numb throat. Later that day he went to the closest hospital which was in Duluth. They did everything right, and I don't remember if they got it out or it came loose. But either way it got out and he got to go fishing with us in Duluth. Anyways then last summer like I said he got hooked in the finger. We were fishing in a smaller boat with I think like 4 or 5 people.... bad idea. Everyone but him was using a bobber for big gills and perch. He was casting for fun. It got crazy because everyone was catching fish and getting stuff and moving around. He cast and his line wrapped around anoth line in the boat that was getting baited. His crank came back only to hook him in the finger. We cut the one hook that was in his finger to leave as much tag end as we could and headed back to the cabin. He pushed it almost all the way through but couldn't quite get it out at the other end. Since it was past the barb he couldn't do anything. My mom and his mom both insisted that he go to the hospital. But since his "fish bone" accedent he refused.... until my uncle conviced him that the blind doctor had been fired. To his distain he ended up going only with the knowledge of her absence. Well he arrived and got checked in and..... guess who...... HookUp
Does anyone know of a stylish hook helmet??? Sunglasses and a wide brim hat.
Spike-A-Pike
Sunglasses and a wide brim hat. Well HookUp, that didn't work to good last time. I'm thinking of something made of Kevlar that is a cross between a hockey helmet and a catcher's mask, maybe add a little lamb's wool for a few lures. rr316
I've had it happen 3 times way past the barb, the first time I went to the clinic... never again... the next 2 times I grabbed my pliers and "popped" it out real quick, works good leaves a little mark and your back to fishing. Watch out for the Owner cutting point... it really does "cut" with very little pressure:lol:
Orion
I know there's some way to wrap some fishing line around it and pul really fast but I'm not sure exactly how...
LedHed
Any other "vise safety" tips???
Orion
You can yank the hook out with 20 pound test line. There are videos on youtube of how to do it. Essentially you just loop the line around the hook that's in the skin. Then have someone or the "hookie" push down on the hook eye and towards the barb. Then yank. mikel7@mac.com
Yeh i know how to use the string trick but i didn't have two hands to do it with. I tried plier's but i couldn't get the right angle i guess. After a few jerks i gave up. The doc said it was the biggest hook he ever took out. He had to jerk on it three times. BLT
I buried a Mustad 1/0 wide gap in the very tip of my thumb a couple months ago. The bone stopped it, so pushing it through was not an option, and that hook has a nice barb on it lol. I "wiggled" the hook one time, and left for the Docs. No way I was going to get it. I had just snelled it, and was pulling on both ends to tighten it, slipped off the end and in she went. Lesson learned, make sure I have dry/grease/oil free hands when making tackle. The people/nurses at the Docs all got a big kick out of it.
Orion
Ouch! There's a video on youtube of a person getting a fly extracted from their eye. Like not the flesh of the eye, the EYEBALL!!!! I watched it, really gross. They have some sort of numbing gel that makes the person feel nothing, so he said it was painless. tubetragger
When I'm tying jigs with 1-5/0 hooks I wiggle a bead over the hook point ....lost too much blood over the years .
Tony Maxwell
Excellent idea, tubedragger. Or hold the hook with vise grips or locking hemostats.
