First swimbaits

Recommended Posts

After hours of failed attempts at dipping hollow swims, I have decided that dipping requires much more patience than I possess. So with that realization I did what any other stubborn bait maker would do and find a way around it. I promply broke out a bag of POP and made a 2 part mold, and within 24 hours produced my first few solid body swims. Obviously nto perfected yet, but let me know what ya'll think of these.

Yes, I poured them in an off white and the paint was nothing more than an experiment. I used pearl powdered coloring and brushed it on. Hard to see in pics (because I stink with a camera) but they have a cool almost holographic quality, sort of like the way a trouts skin looks.

Great looking baits...you could actually incorporate a hollow space/hook slot by adding an aluminum blade to your mold. After you dip the bait it becomes hollow. I've done this with good success on one-piece POP molds. Without a hook slot my solid swim baits tore almost in two on the first fish...with the slot they last for several fish.

I'll tell you what I tried late last night, P&P rattles makes a plastic extractor which basically takes a core sample out of your plastic, and leaves a void in the center of the bait. I have one hanging that I made right before bed last night but haven't seen the results yet. I imagine it will be a smallish cavity, but a cavity none the less. Because you extract the plastic from the nose of the bait, I am quessing a second dip will be needed on the nose to give it some meat for rigging.

The hook slot doesn't fill...there is nowhere for the plastic to go....when you take the bait out of the mold the sides stick together. Dipping is an awesome addition to making simple baits look so lifelike. I'm sure nobody will believe this but I dipped some baits about 25 years ago. I was trying to dip tubes and got the idea to dip other things.
