Spinnerbait Questions

Recommended Posts

Hello Tackleunderground! I'm a new member and I've been reading threads here for some time and decided to enter the underground. I am new to making jigs, jig heads, and spinnerbaits and hope to expand at some point.

I am looking for some advice on spinnerbait making. I am going to be pouring 1oz. spinnerbaits. I want to use the best quality components available. I will be looking for swivels, wire, and colorado blades in the #5 (no smaller) size. What is the best tool for bending the wire? What swivels do you prefer? I want to use a high quality, LONG shank 5/0 hook. Any sources or preferences, tips and or advice would be great. Thank you all for this great resource.

Bronzefly,

First of all, welcome aboard, your insanity is about to begin. As for the spinnerbaits, I don't have the web addresses close to me but do a Google search and you will get them easily.

For top notch blades and swivels, it's the Worth Company. Contact them and have them send you a catalog as well as browse their on-line store. For wire, I use Mustang Wire in Oklahoma, and I only use pre-bent/formed wires, they should have the size you are looking for. If you are really set on bending your own, they can sell you the wire. A very inexpensive tool for this is the 'little blue bender' and I am pretty sure you can find it a Barlows Tackle. For hooks, it is Shorty's Hook Sales in Missouri, they carry all the top brands and can direct you to the long shank hook you need. You will also need skirts for your baits, hands down it is www.fishingskirts.com .

Some of these companies may require that you have a Federal Excise Tax registration number to make purchases with them. If you strike out with any of them, just post a reply and someone will re-direct you to a vendor that you won't need one. Good Luck.

Hey Bronzefly,

I'm about to start to make heavy spinnerbait as well. Here is what I found so far ( Thank you, guys):

1.Ball Bearing Swiwels - Worth (sold by Stamina and Ebay)

http://www.staminainc.com/terminal_tackle/spinnerbait_swivel.html

2.Blades and Hooks from Hagen's. They accept small quantity orders and they don't ask for Federal Excise Tax registration number, though they will charge tax + 1$ for each items, if you order less then minimum. I still found that the final price was less expensive then prices from Netcraft and Barlow's .

http://www.hagensfish.com/components.htm

3. Hooks and wire forms (up to o.62) - luremaking.com

http://luremaking.com/catalogue/catalogue-index/catalogue-items/wires/musky_spinnebait_forms.htm

That is my sources for a components.

I hope it helps.

regards, PSV

Thank you all for the responses. Actually, these spinnerbaits will be used in search of big brown fish and perhaps some LMB also. I would prefer pre-bent wire, but all I've seen you still have to bend the loop for the swivel/blade connection. That is the tool that I am looking to find. I don't want to get into bending my own wire just quite yet. The hooks I am considering are the Gamakatsu small eye nickel round bend "830-602" on page 35 of the 2008 Netcraft catalog to be used with the SJ-3H-L mold. I will be sure to check out the other links and companies you all have provided. Thank you.

Depending on the diameter of the SS wire you plan to use, a small pair of round nose pliers are used to form the loop on the end of the spinnerbait where the swivel is attached. They look like a pair of needlenose pliers except that the jaws are round. Any tackle catalog should have them. Make sure that whichever ones you order are capable of bending the wire you will be using. Good luck.

Bronzefly,

Found my catalogs. Look at page 30 in your Jann's catalog for Mustad 32608N hooks. You can buy 100 of these for what 25 Gammies would cost. I've been using Mustads for more years than I care to count without problems. The round bend pliers are on the bottom left corner of page 42. Good luck.
