akriverrat
ok im not too impressed with the water putty molds. they turn out great, good detail but they just dont hold up to the heat and dont transfer the detail all that great. so anyone ever use a grout mix to make a mold? straight up mortar would hold to the heat i believe and i think you could get the same detail as water putty if you used a fine non shrinkable grout mix. ill probably give it a whirl but was just wondering if anyone already tried this. mikel7@mac.com
Are you making plastic or lead jigs?

bassn1
I never tried it but I would think without a good sealer it would start to flake (powder) apart. Try bondo, gives good detail and lasts for about 50 good pours. Just have to put up with a little shrinkage.
Spike-A-Pike
I wish a couple of the lead pouring gurus would jump on this thread. I don't know enough about modern mortar to know if concern is warranted or not about moisture being trapped and being a hazard when you start pouring lead. I know that water and melted lead don't mix; just not 100 percent sure if your putting yourself at risk. Proceed with caution.
psv
My 2 cents: I tried to work with POP mold. Good material to do samples and try new ideas or if you need small quantity of jgs and don't want to invest . Not really good for production (20-30 pours and it was done). The finish of jigs wasn't bad too. I'm with Bruce about safety. It must be dry. I weighted about 2 weeks before I started to pour first time. mikel7@mac.com
Nothing is going to work like aluminum, just bite the bullit and buy what you want. If there was an easy and cheap way to make your own molds it would already be on here. The problem is the heat as you have already found out
