Monty
i just started tying Marabou trebles "for the first time" for some in-line musky and pike lures i am going to try to make. and my questions is how long do i have to wait till the fly tying head cement is dry enuff to test the movement of the marabuo? any comments or tips to a newbee tyer would gladly be helpful and make me greatly thankful for your help monty
Gr8flyz
If you're using a commercial head cement, or finger nail polish, you should wait at least overnight before you get them wet. Most will be fine after about 8 hours, but 12 or more would be better.
Celticav
Dont laugh, but I have been using that super glue for soft plastics, it is as thin as water and dries pretty quick, I have fished baits within minutes of tying them without any probs, JIM
Gr8flyz
Jim, No laughing from me, I've been using the Pro's Soft Bait Glue for a lot of my tying! Pro's is waterproof, and is a made to be put in water right away. Mike, the owner of the company that makes Pro's, told me water sets it faster! I still use Hard as Nails & epoxy for finish coats, but the Pro's is great when you need to get the fly or jig in the water right now! The only draw back with the Pro's Soft Bait Glue, is it's so thin, that it will soak into tying materials too fast, and sometimes it goes where you don't want it! Big Splash
Keep in mind that marabou takes a few minutes to get thoughly wet for maximum action. Show us some pics too.
deadlystreamer
No laughing from me ether. I've tried that Pro's Soft Bait Glue as head cement also. Works beautifully . Except for when it runs on your finger. Dang good stuff. You guys are correct when you say regular head cement (lacquer) should sit at least over night. Hey Monty, You said you were new at tying, Use your head cement on all applications when tying a fly. It's good to put a dab on the thread when you first get going and on each piece you add to the fly. That my friend is what will hold it together for a very long time. Best of luck to you and have fun. Oh yes by all means, pop a picture on here of your Marabou trebles for us to see. Thanks. George

Celticav
I am not that great of a tie'er, but Deadly Streamer, Splash, and Gr8flyz are experts for sure, couldn't ask for better help than these guys, they are all class acts, JIM
Big Splash
Monty.. the 3/0 will work fine, but there is a 'flat' thread designed for bucktails and jigs. Sort of depends what size your 'tails are. Smaller sizes-fine thread, big sizes heavier thread. Thanks Celticav!
Gr8flyz
Celticav, thanks for the kind words! Monty, For large trebles the 3/0 is OK, as Big Splash has said. Danville also has two other threads that will also work, and lay flat, so they don't bulk up as much. "Flat Waxed Nylon", and "Depth Ray Nylon" both of which are the same type thread, a single floss strand, but one is waxed. The Depth Ray Nylon only comes in fluorescent colors. This is the thread I prefer to use for most of the trebles that I dress.
deadlystreamer
 Careful Jim, You make me sound like I know something. Gr8flyz hit it right on the head, Dansvile thread is about all I use. I use some of the flat waxed Nylon but mostly I use the waxed D and 001 and A size. The 001 comes in a big spool with 575 yards. It's heavy and great for large jigs and streamers. What ever you use that you can get tight and keep tight as you tie and make a neat looking head is what you want to use. One thing I always like to drill into a new tier's head is clear Lacquer or head cement dabbed into the fly or jig as you add new things and a good cover on the head. I don't think you can get too much on it. That is what makes your masterpiece a masterpeace.

deadlystreamer
Good looking spoons Monty. You did a nice job of tying the trebles. Very nice work. George
Big Splash
Monty, your 'bou tails look good. Keep in mind that a lot of feather trailing behind a spoon will deaden the action. Have you tried wrapping a feather onto the hook shank (like a hackle) to get a different effect?
Monty
big splash, i do use flex-floss, and some flashabou as well in them. i put these materials fisrt then tye the marabou on top of them. would it work better if i reversed the steps? monty
