bobothewizard
There has to be a cheaper way to get these. I went to my local bass pro over lunch time to pick up some weighted hooks to try out my new swimbaits and this is what i found. Owner Weighted TwistLock 3X Wire Super Needle Point - Model 5132W $5 for a pack of 3!!! There has to be either a cheaper way to make these or a different brand. Sinko Baits
That is what I thought!!! I wasn't paying those prices. SO... I bought me some fly tying lead wire, and use it on my 5/0 hooks. No way was I paying that. I weight my own hooks and I can make them any weight I want!
nova
There are other brands making similar style hooks; but you must remember that you get what you pay for. (quality) www.novalures.com
saint308
I use these little dog ear clip ons that I clip on the shank of a hitchihker hook. I use a 1/32 in size. Saint.
basskillr
I just crimp a split shot on my hooks. That way I can get whatever hook and whatever weight I want.
Delw
Owner hooks are the most expensive hooks out there. and the best In tournys thats all I use. I have switched to gamy's and was not happy with the results. the points nick up very easy, they bend and fish come off. with Owners fish dont come off very often, The hook set between the eyes takes pliers to come out etc etc. I went back to owner hooks this does not include dropshot hooks s rebarbs are the best then gamy's My personal opinion thats all. bobothewizard
I cant even find a mold for these types of hooks. You would think they would be easy to produce but for some reason i cant find any.
nova
All you need is a pair of pliers and some rubber core sinkers. Take out the core and pinch them on any hook. www.novalures.com
bobothewizard
Oh man... Thats a good idea. Why didnt i think of that...
The Dutchman
Bass Pro has what they call Clam Shot weights. They come in many different sizes. Just buy the sizes you want and clamp them on.
Tman2
I just saw a mold for this type of hook somewhere.. I'll try and locate it again, but....
longhorn
I've been making my own. Mustad 91768 5/0 hooks are $12 for 50....the stainless large coils are $8.50/100 and like Nova I've been using Gremlin rubber core sinkers without the rubber which in 1/16 are 12 cents. I've had excellent success with this hook and the point of the Mustad hook is long lasting. I did not like the $5/three pack either.

Sonny.Barile
Cant you just pinch a small splitshot (splitshod?) on the hook shank where you want it?
MDC
I used the clamshots buy have switched to the rubber cores Hey Delw, If you are using the sproat style Rebarb it is a gammy hook. They also have one that is a round bend, built on a Daiichi. Most all of the ones I see in stores are the gammys tho
saint308
Yep. Here is my thoughts. Ideally I do not want any weight on the hook shank. It gives the bait too much weight when big momma goes to head shaking. However, I find it necessary to have some weight to make sure the bait does not turn on its side. I think I will try a very small bullet weight texas rigged for casting weight and getting the bait down. Then I will put one small split shot on the shank to make the baits swim up and down. I will try this soon. I tried a bigger weight like my picture on the shank and had too many fish throw the baits. So I am still in search mode for the best rig for me. Saint. MDC
Saint I think that's the nature of the beast with these baits. I have about 20 extra wide EWG hooks that work well with the hitchhiker and the rubbercore weights. I have had better hook ups with these because the shank doesn't ride up against the belly of the bait and I get a deeper hookset because the bait has more room to move out of the way. Bad part is I can't remember what brand they are
saint308
MDC: If you can figure out the brand, let me know. I will buy a bunch. Saint.
MDC
No problem Saint. I need some more too. I'll post on here, may help everyone.
Nutty_gnome
Mustad makes a WONDERFUL weighted plastics hook. WIth a sliding weight system and IMO the best method of retaining the bait on on the hook. They are about 5 to 7 bucks for 3 but they last and last. They are the Mustad ultra powerlock weighted hooks - seen at Cabela's Cabela's -- Mustad Power Lock Plus Hooks I love them. I'm not fond of twist lock method used by Owenr and others. My fingers are just too fat to make it work cleanly. I fooled around with crimping split shot egg sinkers to a hoook and it just didn't work out for a lot of reasons. The movable weights on these hooks really do work very well for the money. Just my 2 cents.
hammer1
I'm with Del on this one, in tourneys your hook is one of the most important tools, Owner are the best!
VARick
Split shots here too.. you can place anywhere on the hook to get the drop rate/flutter that you want. Also DOA has pinch weights that are sort of similar to the weighted hook style/look. Rick I just crimp a split shot on my hooks. That way I can get whatever hook and whatever weight I want. Gloomisman
if you think owners are expensive check out xpoint. They arent even weighted. they are great hooks though. Quality costs. PS I use lead tape.
nova
X-point used to say right on their ads;" too exspensive for most anglers". That'll give you a big clue;lol. www.novalures.com
