basskat
I coated three plaster molds tonight with the fiberglass resin. I guess time will tell as to how well it works. It looks good, just hope it gives me the finish I'm looking for.
Fish_N_Fool
Update on fiberglass resin molds, After about 100 pours I had the resin bubble & peel off one of the 4 mold cavitys. So it's not fool proof. I'm still looking for a better finish but will use resin till I find one.
basskat
I poured about 50 last night on the resin coated molds with no problems, again time will tell. Fishin, were your molds completely dry? I asking about the plaster. If it's not completely dry when your coat it with ModPog or just about anything the problem you described appears. One of the molds I got in the swap, I think BigSplash made it, has one of the best finishes I've ever seen. Man, that stuff is smooth as glass. What was it ans where do you get it? Mercury
Basskat, if im not mistaken it is the resin that is poured on bar tops. He posted it earlier. Most places like Menards, home depo, etc should have it. How did the resin do as far as detail loss? I lost some with the epoxy, when brushed on. ( I have to admit I didnt thin it as much as others do)
Fish_N_Fool
Basskat, yes the mold was dry. it's about a month old and I baked it for over a day before I coat it with the fiberglas resin. Although it was put over some other stuff I tried to seal it with first, so that may have been the problem. I still plan on trying some clear liquid plastic casting resin that I found on the net. It's kinds spendy so I want to make sure I think it will work first.
basskat
I did lose some minor detail. About the same I lose with ModPog. Fishin', I would bet your problem was the other coating you had on the mold. Like I stated before, time will tell. Thanks for the info Merc, I'll try that this weekend. MONKEYqpHUNTER
were do you get the fiberglass resin??????
Vodkaman
I think it is called polyester resin. You add a few drops of catalyst to activate it. I bought mine in a craft store, more expensive but I just wanted to try it out.
longhorn
Don't know where this 2003 string came from but will throw in MHO. Elmer's Glue All is the best coating for plaster molds period...Easy to apply....brush on or flood with a 50/50 water mix....cheap....hardly any loss of detail...dries quickly and lasts forever...no release agent needed...glossy finish....etc, etc. Try it, you'll like it. Gloomisman
longhorn, how long do you let it soak?
longhorn
Three or four minutes..then drain. When it dries do a test pour...most times a second application is needed or you can touch up with a brush where you get bubbles in the bait. rjones
I have bought fiberglass resin in the auto section of wal-mart. It is made by Bondo. It will be around the touch up paint and sandpaper.
